So, Barnes is not going to be taking any leaps forward, I guess? His talents will be kind of wasted here if he's just going to be a slightly improved version of his GS role.

It's more Sixers are a pretty gigantic team which takes away DSJ's drives.

Gotcha. He's going to have to learn to deal with the Embiids if he's going to be successful, so it's good practice. Barea should be able to teach him a few tricks.

The biggest disappointment in a season full of them. The guy just isn’t reliable enough to be one of your top 2 scorers. I don’t get because he really seemed to be headed in that direction last year. He needs to lose ten pounds and work on his handles and finishing in traffic.

I hope that as soon as the inevitable injuries occur they are on the phone with Wiz, NO, Cavs, Detroit, charlotte etc. offering up "vet leadership" for picks or young guys. Barnes, Devin, JJB, Salah, Seth and obviously Wes and Powell all better be available

Not sure Barnes is very traceable right now. JJB and Devin may be the only ones to elicit bites

I was wrong, it apparently can get worse than last seasons start. Even with a better roster-ish.

Btw, for people complaining about Smith Jr not playing more, his knee is bothering him. He was questionable for this game.

So when does the college basketball season start? I'm forecasting we will all have a better time evaluating potential future Mavs than watching this mess of a roster this season.

I'm just worried that when Curry gets back we'll start winning games.

I don't think you should. He isn't going to fix our massive flow issues. Isn't going to fix our flurry or bust method of basketball. Isn't going to fix Pn R issues or lock down others defensively.

Having an elite 3pt shooter opens things up and provides a lot of dimension to the game. Just look at how much the game changed for us once we got Matthews shooting threes.

Didnt think it could be worse than last year. At the least I thought it would be entertaining. Few and far between.
Let the young guys (not powell) loose Rick.

In thoery sure. But we rely on 3's too much. We just don't have enough as a team and I can't see Seth getting us over the hurdle to win the games we are losing.

The only thing that worries me this season is Smith's knee.
He was also terrible last night likely because of it, but his decision making has a loooong way to go. He has so many tools that he needs to fine tune. That's what will separate him from guys like Chris Paul if not developed. I'm not worried about it, just simply stating that he has to get better and will.

It's certainly early, but I'm asking myself the exact same question as well. It oddly seems that he's not an ideal fit next to a playmaking PG. Last year we ran a large chunk of the offense through him in the post. Now with Dennis he needs to be much more mobole, cut to the basket and hit those threes.

This. For some reason Penny Hardaway came to mind, but at least he had some major success prior to his knee issues. If Smith turns out to have been a shaky pick due to his knee, then the Mavs are the absolute bottom of the league disaster that'll take at least 3 more years to dig out of. Ack, I can't bear the thought of THAT. Dirk will be long gone and Harris and Barea are aging, so other than making fun of Powell and Wes, there won't be much left to keep tuning in for. The MBT needs an overhaul.

Not sure if his knee was bothering him or not but the Jazz are an absurdly tough match up for Dennis. Rubio is one of the best PG defenders in the league and he has Rudy Gobert behind him defending the basket. Luckily not every team has a Gobert on their team.

I just started to say that DSJ can easily spot up for 3's from Barnes posting up. But his 3P% is 22.7?!? Holy cow it sure seems like he's shot the ball better than that. And his FT% is only 45%. Regardless, there is no reason why those two cannot be coached to work together. It's just the right plays ... and it's very early in the season or even career for DSJ.

Well, DSJ won't be getting too many easy match-ups, especially with Beverly on tap. This is a grown man's league. He has shown us he can be the complete package, and we have to remain patient. Very few rookies come in blazing hot every game. He will grow into his game and flourish. As others have pointed out, it's really his health that is the only factor for me. I don't worry too much on the skills and mental part of his game.
