Default GDT Game 4: Mavs (0-3) vs Warriors (1-2) 10/23/2017 07:30 PM CST FSSW

3 things to watch as the Mavericks host the Warriors
The NBA champs come to town as Dallas is still looking for its first win.
by Doyle Rader

After three games, the Dallas Mavericks are winless. Notching that fist victory won’t be easy Monday night as the Golden State Warriors come to town. They’re pretty good, if you haven’t heard. So, here’s what you need to know before the opening tip.

Rebounding
The Mavs are simply atrocious at grabbing boards. They average only 39.3 rebounds per game. That’s good for 12th in the league which isn’t a terrible mark on the surface. However, opponents are grabbing a total of 53.7 rebounds against them. That’s the most in the NBA. Further, Dallas’ defensive rebounding percentage is a lowly 71.2 percent. No one is saying boo-urns.

If the Mavs have any hope of competing with the reigning champs, they are going to have to do a better job on the glass. That’s a tall order to ask too. Even with Nerlens Noel in the game, Dallas has to rely on wings and guards to pull down rebounds. Unfortunately, that hasn’t proven to be reliable yet.

Klay
Of course the Warriors have Stephen Curry and some guy named Kevin Durant but the true Maverick killer on their roster is Klay Thompson. In his career, he averages more points, 22.2, against Dallas than he does against any other team except the Pacers. Nothing the Mavs do seems to slow him down. If anyone is going to have a career night, the smart money is on Klay.

Wes
What’s up with Wesley Matthews? He’s always been a streaky shooter but his shot simply isn’t falling. He’s shooting a mere 26.7 percent and only 31.8 percent on 3s. Compounding the issue is the 10 shots he puts up per game. That’s a lot of missed opportunities.

Making matters worse, Matthews is turning the ball over at an alarming rate. Through three games, he has 11 turnovers, the most on the team. Harrison Barnes has the second most on the team with six. With Matthews handling the ball more, the turnovers are just as costly as his missed shots.

It’s too early to assume Matthews’ funk is a sign of things to come but he needs to turn things around fast. He’ll be in games regardless, though. There simply are not enough wings on the team for him to sit.

How to watch
Tipoff is at 7:30 PM Central on Fox Sports Southwest or NBA League Pass.

Should DSJ even bother if he's questionable? I dont want the knee worse in an 800 point loss.

No, DSJ should not be playing. He should have an assistant coach in his ear the whole game pointing out relevant game situations.

Heads up, People! This is going to be an ugly loss. We are playing against the team that went to the Finals the last 3 years and won it 2 of those. They have arguably the best player in the league. It will be bad and so, so sad.

What to expect:
- Wes getting more minutes than he deserves. He will give effort on defense and will make stops and provide veteran determination. He will have turnovers trying to play outside of himself. Just accept it for now.
- Powell getting more minutes than he deserves. Hopefully, he makes a couple of threes since that is all he appears capable of doing against NBA talent. My only hope is that MBT is playing him to try and drive up trade value.

What to look for:
- NN getting significant minutes. Please, please, pretty please.
- Barnes getting motivated playing against his championship buddies and maybe sparks him out of his off-season, passive mentality. He seriously needs to watch Clint Eastwood as Josey Wales and get "mad dog mean".
- I expect Yogi to have a good game. Not sure why, but I feel it coming.
- Given this is pretty much a guaranteed loss, Dirk should get 2 spurts of minutes in each half and then told to take it easy while ending up with less than 20 minutes played.

Bobby Karalla‏ @bobbykaralla
Without DSJ the Mavs' offense has been a 1-PG system which means slower possessions. Mavs have played 101.49 pace w/ DSJ, 95.55 without him.

Is it bad to hope for Powell to have a career-ending injury? Maybe a tight hammy for Dirk so we can call up Motley?

How would that work with 3 more years on the books? Wouldn't we still have to pay him anyway?

We'd still have to pay him and he'd still count against our cap (although we're already pretty low on that), but we'd free up a roster spot for Motley/Clavell, Rick wouldn't be tempted to play him, and we'd get an exception of a few million we could use to sign someone else (maybe even Motley)

Obviously not as good as stretching him, which we won't do, but I'm still praying for it.

@bobbykaralla: Dennis Smith Jr. said he will play tonight.

@bobbykaralla: DSJ had an MRI on Friday but everything checked out OK.

@ESefko: Devin Harris was not at Mavericks' shootaround but not out of the question he could be at tonight's game.

@bobbykaralla: Seth Curry wins the shootaround 3-pt contest and walks off mid-arc. Hope is he'll be back soon. https://twitter.com/bobbykaralla/sta...91317183307776

When Seth does come back will we see less Wes? Or will we see less of everyone else and Wes still gets 35mins? Cuz that could make me pretty upset.

I'm more concerned with Matthews' role than I am about his mpg.

Dude is legitimately worse than Finley with his handles and is a black hole when he drives. As far as I'm concerned, he should only dribble it once after a pump fake. Otherwise he shouldn't be dribbling the ball at all. Just defend and catch-and-shoot.

I am also on board with Motley coming up.

I would like to see more of Kleber and less Dirk and Powell.

I would like to see DSJ back and have a stellar game against a tough PG and team.

I would like to see Wes stay on a stationary bike for 90% of the game.

I would like to see some fire and passion. Houston started eating us up and there was no fight, layups and dunks. If we can't stop it, at least make them pay for it..the art of a hard legal foul is lost.

I'm glad DSJ is being thrown to the wolves. That's exactly what he and the team need for development. You can't just hold a player out because you're afraid of injury or they'll never play anyway. If he gets hurt, then it'll happen anyway. I hope he doesn't and it was just a hiccup.

I finally have a reason to watch without constantly stabbing my Matthews voodoo doll.

It sounds like Dennis could have played last game, but they kept him out as a precaution... So this is actually what it looks like with the kid gloves on. Guess a slanger’s gotta slang.

@ESefko: Fine ($50K) but no suspension for Steph Curry means he and Dennis Smith Jr. will see a lot of each other tonight at AAC.

Haslem throws a mouth piece and gets suspended for a playoff game. Curry throws it (again) and he gets a fine.

The NBA is so damn pathetic

Easy prediction... if the Jr. plays, the Mavs win by 25... if the Jr. does not play, the Mavs win by 10, but no matter what, the Mavs will shake up the NBA world tonight.

Mavs - 155
Worries - 130

@IsaacHarrisNBA: Steph Curry says everyone knows @Dennis1SmithJr by his athleticism, but it’s his ability to get teammates involved that is impressive

@BallinWithBryan: Devin Harris is present in the arena but he just said he will not be playing tonight.

@BallinWithBryan: Devin Harris: “It’s been a tough week. Family is taking it pretty hard, as you would expect them to."

@BallinWithBryan: Harris: “The support system here has been great.” Said Cuban, Carlisle, and teammates have been there for him every step of the way.

@tim_cato: Devin Harris said that after his brother unexpectedly died last week, Mark Cuban visited the hospital and stayed with him the entire day

@BallinWithBrya: Harris: “[My teammates] are my brothers, too… Just being able sit with them and be around them has been a healing thing, as well."

@EarlKSneed: Dennis Smith Jr.: "Our main thing is we just got to come out with some swag. ... We've got to be the Dallas Mavericks that we can be."

@BallinWithBryan: Carlisle on Dennis Smith Jr.: “He has the leadership DNA.” Respects DSJ’s opinion on becoming the Mavs that they can ultimately be.
