Just now saw this. Really sad. I hope this little community continues to live on in some way. It's been part of my life for more than a decade now, and even though I haven't been active lately, it still has a special place in my heart.

also sad to hear this news...and went through the trouble of figuring out how to login to my old aol account so i could retrieve the password and login here to actually post. although i haven't posted in a long time, i've been a regular reader the past several years. sad to watch as traffic has declined, and even sadder that this community will go away. will always have good memories from this place.

djb - you are 100% justified in making whatever decision you do. thank you for creating and sustaining this community, which has some of the most intelligent sports discussion anywhere on the web.

and if there is some sort of movement to crowd-fund and keep d-m going, i will certainly contribute.

+1... Given the responses in this thread, it looks like money is the one obstacle we can easily overcome -- but I understand there's more to it than that.

Shame, what a hell of a ride it was though!

Sad to hear, will miss this place for sure. Many intelligent and civil minds here, and I have noticed the decline of active members over the years.

The only Mavs & NBA forum that I participate in, even if it's just to read, wouldn't know where to go now, been here quite a while, was lurking for 2 years here before I even joined.

Thanks for the memories. Was a lurker for awhile until I finally made an account in 2011 because I couldnt talk to anyone at home about the Mavs.

Twitter sucks but I enjoy reading what others say. Dont post much during games on there.

No hard feelings on it getting shut down. Sounds like theres way more to it than the money and Im not in the owner's shoes.

Hopefully we find a spot to continue this forum in some capacity.

Yeah, I started lurking here back in 2003, but finally broke down and made an account after the 2006 Finals because I lived in Austin (Spurs country) and there was absolutely nobody I could talk to about it... I just needed a place to vent at first, but it became so much more than that over the years.

I'm sure you guys are familiar with this bit of philosophy:

Quote:
A college professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty glass mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a jar of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open spaces between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar and of course the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous yes.

The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the table and then proceeded to pour the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the grains of sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things -- your family, your partner, your health, your children, your friends, your favorite passions -- things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

"The pebbles are the other things that matter, like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else -- the small stuff.

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. Play another 18.

"There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first -- the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers."
For me, D-M has been the "beer" in my life... Most people turn to Facebook or Reddit whenever they're bored and need to kill a few minutes, but for me, this forum has been the place that fills the downtime in my life (ahh, who am I kidding -- 26k posts since 2006 -- this site has pretty much been the "golf balls" for me!)

I think you missed the point -- obviously the story is about how I have to get stinkin' drunk to watch the Mavs these days!

That's a pretty cool analogy, thanks UD.

And now that you mention reddit, they do have a Mavs sub. Admittedly I'm not a big fan of reddit but it's an alternative too and I guess it would be better than twitter for GDT kind of stuff.

Sweet. Can't wait to watch people post about trading every player on the team and fire the coach after every loss. Sounds groovy.

Care to elaborate? You've definitely been a perpetuator of this myth (probably due to your consistently waning popularity...)

I'm sure my consistently waning popularity has more to do with my decreasing lack of time or energy to provide research to back up my opinions. Like many, I still like the Mavs, but life has changed... I had a great 7-8 year run... And then work and life pretty much got in the way.

I can certainly relate to life and work getting in the way.

As for twitter, I've made an account and currently following UD and KG. I'll start following the rest of you guys later this evening.

I suppose /r/mavericks will have to suffice even though I enjoyed this forum board much more.

Here's to wishing you all have happy lives. Take care. Discussions have been mostly interesting, sometimes entertaining, and occasionally annoying. But, there has always been a nucleus of insightful and imaginative posters. Go Mavs!

Uh, why not at least one more year more?

Shut it down together with Dirks retirement, that would be really nice timing. Dirk deserves it People allready offered to pay for the next year.

I wasn't lurking as often back then but just skimming those threads I don't rly see the issue with calling them bad threads with the context that I assume they are under. Which based on the reaction of the majority, seemed to be a recurring issue of threads being started unnecessarily and/or pointless. Whether they be redundant threads or entirely devoid of any thought/purpose. The only exception being the trip dub thread you created which escalated due to a joke which was pointed at the current(then) issue of new threads. In fact it looked more like the issue of the thread was directed more towards you rather than the content. So I can't comment on it as I have no idea what your posts were like back then.

I will say I did not read through that God awful trade thread you bumped. The title alone tells me all I need to know. Even if you take hindsight out... Trading a MVP for a rookie srsly? I mean there is the perfect example of nonClutchFans posting. That is exactly the kind of crap you see there on a daily basis why is it a negative to not have that kind of drivel here?

Btw... Every time I get that proxy server error on site and it fails to load I get nervous thinking the plug has been pulled early.

The only exception being the trip dub thread you created which escalated due to a joke which was pointed at the current(then) issue of new threads.
I bumped it because of some good comedy in the thread.

Have to agree with others that it will feel weird without the site. Although I'm one of many whose posts rapidly declined over the years, d-m.com has been more or less a daily visit during the season and the first thing on 'big' news during the offseason was getting here and look up what people were thinking.

2011, mavsmoneyball.com. I coded a stats-tool that analyses play-by-play data because of this board. Has been a fun ride although it eventually turned out to be only an episode of my life.

This leaves just one last thing to say: I think I was wrong about Roddy B.

Cheers guys, will definitely watch where you'll be gathering in the future and probably follow.

Woah. First time seeing this. I just don't have time to post much anymore, but I'll miss having this place around.

I followed DJ from the Lone Mavs Fan Forum, or maybe it was kgveteran? That was such a long time ago. Man.
