Wednesday afternoon, without a single objection, the council approved renaming a short stretch of Olive Street, between North Field Street and Victory Avenue, to Nowitzki Way.

How many remember his dunking skills before the championship? Cause he was a nice dunker. I just watched a video with some of his best dunks. He was actually quick and had a nice leap! He would dunk from the outer circle (only circle in those days as there was no defensive 3 seconds violation). I would love a collection of his greatest games and plays in his career in HD. Not possible considering the technology when he started his career, but it'd be so nice to have. That'd be a large collection considering all of his feats! Dirk's the GOAT. I'm excited for the New Era, but they have much to prove. Dirk had a 21 year career and performed at a superstar level for a very long time. I don't care if Porzingis or Doncic get 2 MVP awards. They still have more to prove. Individual accolades meant nothing to Dirk. He cared about the team's success. If they lead the team to multiple championships, then that's a nice start. I'll consider a new GOAT then, but they better stay around for more. Both of them.

I'd love to see this thread near the top 21 years from now, just to reflect how important his 21 years in the NBA were.

Nowitzki to receive historic honor
http://www.dallascitynews.net/nowitz...historic-honor

Quote:
To honor Nowitzki’s 21-year NBA career and his abundance of contributions to this community, the Dallas City Council unanimously approved to rename Olive Street, between North Field Street and Victory Avenue, to Nowitzki Way in September.

The street naming ceremony will be held at the American Airlines Center at noon on Oct. 30 and is open to the public. The event will also be streamed live on the City of Dallas’ cable channel and Facebook page.

Oh, that's the one I thought you linked earlier haha. Didn't actually click on your link, just happened to have listened to it earlier in the day.

This is a really great podcast and it is a must listen for any Mavs fan.

A lot of the stats Bill listed off are things that I used to bring up all the time when I would defend Dirk to my friends in Portland before 2011. His resume was crazy, even then.

Also learned some new things, like how the hoop summit practices were in Dallas and Donnie didn't want him to play so he'd stay a secret. I also never thought about the Robert Traylor trade relying on picks 7 and 8 not taking Dirk.. what a crazy gamble. Imagine if he would have gone 8. The mavs would have been stuck with Traylor even though they had a chance to get Dirk at 6.

A great clip from that Simmons podcast linked above. Simmons has Dirk #17 all-time. Incredibly high praise. I'm kind of surprised- very pleasantly- the Simmons ranks Dirk above Garnett, and that most media figures seem to these days. Their resumes are so similar, yet before 2011, almost everyone outside of Dallas strangely acted like Dirk couldn't carry Garnett's jock strap.

It just makes me so incredibly happy to see how pretty much everyone loves Dirk now, considering how criminally underrated and disrespected he was through most of his career.

I think the Garnett thing was just a property how much marketing he had behind him, and how much more he actively pursued having endorsements, signature shoes, etc. Also a much more forceful outward personality. All of those things at the time sort of artificially puffed him up in people’s eyes. Dirk didn’t do those things, so he didn’t get the bump until after it was all over and people looked at it more on the basketball side. Not a shot at KG because he was great and pursuing those things is totally fine- just different guys.

Dirk over KG all day everyday. But I'm still stoked to see "Uncut Gems"

I didn’t listen to the podcast, but why would they be stuck with Traylor? They could have just traded for Pierce. I thought Nellie was high on him also. Did they say otherwise on the podcast?

I honestly think that's it more than anything. Same with the doubts about Luka. If some 18 year old kid had dominated the NCAA the way Luka did Euroleague and Liga ACB, the hype around that kid would reach Lebron level. Nevermind that even the most highly touted draft prospects typically can't sniff a rotation spot in Euroleague.

The ultimate irony is that with 3 point revolution and pace-and-space, the NBA is now far less physical than European basketball. As Luka himself has said, it's way easier to score in the NBA than in Europe.

I'm not sure where the "soft" Euro stereotype came from, but it was always garbage. As if Drazen Petrovic or Arvydas Sabonis were soft. And for Euros that were hyped as the next Dirk and disappointed in the NBA, it wasn't because they were soft, it was because they just weren't good at basketball. Darko didn't suck because he was soft. He sucked because he sucked.

^In fact, Darko was anything but "soft". He was always ready to throw a punch.

The whole "soft" thing for Europeans is weird, and to try to explain it would probably get you into topics that are very sensitive, so I will stay away from that.

But it always struck me as very ignorant since most of the Europeans that came in the NBA were from former Yugoslavia and Soviet Union - i.e war torn countries that went through very difficult times. Few if any of the American NBA players have had to grow in harder environments. Yet somehow, they were labeled as "soft" and unable to handle a fight....

Great point bring up Sabonis….
He's one of the great sports "what if's" of my lifetime.. I would have loved to have seen him in his prime in the NBA. A healthy Sabonis from the age of 21 in the NBA could have possibly been one of the greatest to ever play the game.. but by the time he made it to the US, his knees were shot and he had suffered a torn achilles. By the time he came over to the US, I have always heard that his legs/knees were in such bad shape that he could qualify for handicapped parking but he still put up 16 points and 10 rebounds one year..

I've looked and looked for footage of Sabonis in his prime, and there's only a precious few minutes on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06usV6451ik https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DabiGsl168

You can see flashes of his passing skills, and you can see that he's really quick and agile for a guy that huge. Still, I'd give anything to actually see a real sample of that guy at his peak. Everyone who ever saw him or played against him said he was the greatest they'd ever seen. Bill Walton said he was a 7 ft 3 Larry Bird.

"What if" indeed. For my money, prime Sabonis is one of the two greatest "what ifs" in NBA history- the other one being Len Bias.

I haven't been to nearly as many NBA games as some, but I've been to my share, and I take a little bit of pride in the list of great players that I've seen play in person at least once. One of my earliest Mavs games was a playoff game against the Blazers in '03. He retired for good after that series, so I was damn lucky to see him play at least once, even if he was only a shell of himself by then. Incidentally, that game also allowed me to cross Scottie Pippen's name off my list.

Both Sabonis and Bias were first round picks the same year... Drazen Petrovic and Roy Tarpley were also in the draft..
