That's the 15-Year Club — the only seven NBA players who spent their entire careers with the same franchise, played at least 15 seasons AND won at least one title. You don't just stumble onto that list — all seven are Hall of Famers, with 21 rings among them. Think about what the list means: excellence, durability, longevity, loyalty, championships … it's your best-case scenario for a basketball career, basically.

It also means that they didn't go shopping for the easiest route to a Championship-- they made a championship team happen.

Met Dirk at work last Saturday. He really is what they all say he is, incredibly humble and a fantastic person. I was very nervous going to talk to him but he really was open and welcoming, proud to say I've met my idol

In today's ESPN 5-on-5, I was asked an interesting question. Was Roy Hibbert having the best playoff series against the Miami Heat of any player in the big three era? My immediate answer: "no, what the heck, Dirk Nowitzki, whaaaaaaat." My not-so-immediate response: "... still, that's a neat construction."

...and then he goes on to form two starting fives of traditional Heat- and Spurs-killers.

I really enjoyed reading the whole thing, but some might find it to be a little bit too Spurs-centric. Still, give it a chance!

Superstar athletes invariably serve as role models, which is dicey business.

They’re as human as the rest of us. Mistakes are made. Some athletes handle them better than others. Like everybody else, our sporting heroes are subject to life’s curveballs, double dribbles and sacks.

Fans here have been blessed in the superstar department with the Mavericks’ Dirk Nowitzki. We could debate all day about what it will be like when the next basketball icon comes along in Dallas. Dwight Howard’s drama? It surely would play differently than Nowitzki’s 15 years, which have been pretty much controversy-free.

Now, the pressure rises for Nowitzki in the role-model department. He’s preparing to start a new chapter of life, one that most superstars before him have also been through — fatherhood.

Michael Jordan did it on a substantially higher profile. For the most part, not nearly as many people want to “be like Dirk” as the generation that wanted to be like Mike. Jordan once said that being a role model for his kids was a lot harder and more important than being a role model for millions of fans. He’s right, of course.

It’s a good bet that Nowitzki feels the same way. If you’ve watched his life since he arrived with the Mavericks as a stranger in a strange land, you’ve seen him grow more comfortable in the limelight. He’s become a superstar any fan would be proud to have on their team.

And the uncharted territory he’ll enter into before the summer is over — he’s been private about his wife Jessica’s actual due date — will be more important than anything he’s done so far.

It’s one thing to be a role model to kids (and maybe a few adults) from afar. But having a young ’un in your own home is different for a star athlete. It means the responsibility factor goes way up — or at least it should.

“Test is a good word,” Nowitzki said this week about having a Dirklet. “It should be great. I always said off the court one of the biggest dreams of mine is to have a family, have some kids running around. And I always thought I was great with kids.

“Obviously having your own is different. It’s a full-time job. But I’m really excited. I’m ready. We timed it really well in the off-season. I won’t sleep much in the beginning, but at least that’s the summer. By the time the season rolls around, hopefully I’ll be able to get some sleep and have a little rhythm. I look forward to having my own kid. It’ll be a great and wonderful experience.”

Better than he can imagine, except for the sleeping part, which will be even worse than he can imagine.

Sunday is the last time Nowitzki will celebrate Father’s Day without being a father. He’s spending this one with his dad, who’s celebrating his 70th birthday in Germany. Nowitzki will return to Dallas before the NBA draft on June 27.

And, of course, before his family expands.

Dirk as a dad has a nice ring to it. And he clearly has the skill set to be a good example for his kids. One of the intriguing things about Nowitzki’s time as the Mavericks’ icon is that it has been relatively drama-free. Apart from a regrettable relationship with a woman who duped him in 2009 and a falling out with then-coach Avery Johnson the year before that, it’s hard to come up with instances when Nowitzki hasn’t done the right thing.

Nowitzki is the first to admit, by the way, that Johnson helped make him a better player, particularly on defense and in the low post offensively.

But the point is Nowitzki is exactly what you want in a superstar — and therefore, a role model.

And there aren’t many of those. Consider the biggest names in the NBA. LeBron James will never live down “The Decision,” no matter how many rings he wins. He’s forever branded as a “me” star.

Howard, of course, bailed on Orlando’s franchise and is becoming synonymous with indecisiveness.

Kevin Durant is probably the leader in the clubhouse among younger superstars. Giving $1 million to help the tornado victims of Moore, Okla., helps your good-guy cred.

Nowitzki doesn’t need assistance in that area. As for the sleep and the diapers and the teaching that all adults should cherish when they have kids, he’ll figure it out.

What kind of birthday present do you get a guy who has $200 million in career earnings, 11 All-Star appearances and a championship ring?

Dirk Nowitzki, who turns 35 today, would love to get a legitimate co-star. But Mark Cuban and the Mavs’ front office have to wait another week and a half before they can go shopping.

Perhaps the Clippers’ front office gave Dirk an early birthday present by backing away from trade talks with the Celtics that would have brought Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett to Los Angeles. That deal would have essentially slammed the door on the possibility of Chris Paul leaving L.A., but the Mavs’ slim hopes to recruit CP3 are still alive.

Dwight Howard is the more likely possibility at this point, not that it’s anywhere near to being a slam dunk that he’d choose Dallas over staying with the Lakers or signing with the Rockets or Hawks.

But there’s nothing Dirk and the Mavs can do about any of that until July 1. For now, he should just relax and enjoy his birthday, encouraged by the fact that 37-year-old Tim Duncan is a Finals force and hopeful of acquiring the kind of help that can get the big German back to that stage.
