Default July 13th Rumors

The biggest rumor today, Bibby going to the Cavs. I like this for Cleveland. This makes Cleveland very dangerous with a healthy James. I like Atkins also and he will add to Denver. I like Scola to Houston and even Jackie Butler has been doing good in the summer league. Houston is going to be good next year. Good so far on paper anyway.

According to multiple league executives, the Cavs and Sacramento Kings have restarted talks to bring Mike Bibby to Cleveland. The two teams nearly completed a deal shortly before February's trading deadline and have been in discussions again over the past several days. A version of the deal was close to happening Thursday, sources said, in a three-way move with the San Antonio Spurs...

The Nuggets are closing in on their point guard, and it is not the incumbent. The Nuggets and free agent Chucky Atkins are close to agreeing on a contract, two league sources said Thursday. A deal could be reached as early as this weekend...

Stackhouse is confident in president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson, owner Mark Cuban and coach Avery Johnson in assessing the free-agent market. But Stackhouse believes a couple of the names he's hearing – Chris Webber and Steve Francis – are worth exploring...

Stackhouse said signing a player such as Steve Francis or Chris Webber, each of whom the Mavs have shown interest in, would strengthen the team's title chances...

Agent Mark Bartelstein said he spoke with Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson on Thursday about 6-8 veteran swingman James Posey (Miami) and other scenarios. Bartelstein said forward P.J. Brown (Chicago) is still mulling retirement...

The Rockets completed a deal to land the rights to forward Luis Scola, one of the stars of Argentina's 2004 gold-medal-winning Olympic team and twice the MVP of the Spanish league. They will send guard Vassilis Spanoulis, a 2009 second-round pick and cash to San Antonio for Scola and reserve center Jackie Butler...

We're interested in Posey? How many swing players could we possibly need? Are we just trying to sign every defensive SF in the league?

Terry
Stack
Howard
George
Buckner/ R.Terry

We are loaded at the 2/3.

Something funny is going on here.

It makes me wonder, do we have an offer on the table? A team has agreed to? Maybe we are going after these type players. Do not get me wrong, Posey, Barnes, and others are good but how many will we need? Maybe we do have a block buster trade on the table or a combo trade that we need to replace this type player or players. Has me thinking also.

PJ Brown is also an odd situations also. He gripped big time last year he wanted more time and was upset. On one hand he want's alot of time and maybe start, who knows. On the other hand he talked of retiring last year and now again and says he hasn't made his mind up.

It might be a situation he want's his cake and eat it to. I want to go to a team that can win a title but also i want to start. It is hard for him at this age to do that on a team that has a shot at a title. If i was him, i would be like Finley. Just let me help and me have a shot at the title.

We certainly don't need any more than 2, probably only one. But unless we pursue many, we may get none. Until we land one, it's just talk.

I agree. I think we went after Gerald Wallace hard and a trade deal but probably Charlotte says no. The guy really produced and has a great looking future. I also think we have gone after PJ Brown hard and with him saying, i do not know, let me think about it.

Others are being snatched up and we might be left out in the cold if maybe we do not go after several.

Any of these guys could miss a great chance and a good pay day with us and the biggest thing, a legit shot at a title. If you can play some defense, you will get time in Avery's system. If guys snooze like a PJ Brown, maybe a Barnes, and a Posey says yes, then they might lose out and will on us. I would rather be like a Finley and play for a team with a legit shot, like Dallas or SA and especially if i am PJ Brown. He doesn't have long. I sort of wonder if we won't trade Buckner but again i know Avery likes defense.

July 13th Rumors.

Steve Blake is heading to Portland, meaning he won't have to travel far to join his new team. The free-agent point guard said today he has agreed to a three-year deal with the Trail Blazers. Though a Florida native, Blake and his family make their offseason home in Portland.

Morris Peterson and the New Orleans Hornets agreed to terms on a 4-year contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Friday. The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the contract has not been announced, said Peterson would sign the deal following a vacation.

The Cavs, sources say, would have to send Drew Gooden to Sacramento in any deal for Bibby, which would make re-signing restricted free agent Anderson Varejao even more of a priority for Cleveland than it was a week ago. Yet Varejao is said to be strongly weighing the prospect of calling off negotiations this summer and invoking Cleveland's $1.3 million qualifying offer for next season, because the sides are so far apart in negotiations. If he chooses that option, Varejao would become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2008.

Steve Francis remains the Clippers' No. 1 free-agent target … and the Clippers are still considered the team most likely to sign Francis. But don't discount Dallas. The scoring guard formerly known as Stevie Franchise in Houston has a close relationship with Mavericks coach and offseason Houston resident Avery Johnson, who is heading Dallas' recruitment of both Francis and Chris Webber. It's believed that the Mavs favor Webber if they have to choose between the two. Yet they're also contemplating whether to divvy up their $5.3 million exception in an attempt to sign both former All-Stars, as Dallas searches for an additional offensive threat or two that can prevent opposing defenses from focusing so heavily on Dirk Nowitzki.

I thought Webber was about done untill i watched him last year and i thought he did good at Detroit. He would help us and i have never been a big fan of his but i know he would help. Francis probably would also if he can keep his cool. I am all for anything helping us. Blake is a good pick up. Portland has really done well.

Bibby would help the Cavs.

We never really seemed in the race for MoPete.
Portland continues to stock-pile very useful talent. The challenge now is to just mesh it all together and find an identity.
I think Bibby will be a good fit for the LeBrons

I would think if there was a "planned deal" we would've heard some grumblings about it. The only thing we've realistically heard was they were shopping Buck at the draft. I think they're just going hard on all of the 2/3s because they might feel if they put all the eggs in one basket they might not have enough to make it happen...so divide and conquer.

If they do get Francis/Webber and a Barnes, Pietrus, or Posey. They might just take the hit on value and trade some people out for future considerations.
I kinda get the feeling we'll get one of the two out of Francis/Webber and either get Barnes or Pietrus and call it an offseason.

Add Mikki Moore to the list of players receiving the full MLE this offseason. Mr. 8 teams in 10 years himself just signed a three-year deal for $18MM with Sacramento.

Much as I'd like to see the Mavs add a difference-maker this offseason, the list of guys getting the full MLE is getting ridiculous. It's starting to seem like every NBA free agent either gets the max or the full MLE.

I'd much rather the Mavs add talent through a sensible trade than a huge contract for a guy who's simply not very good. We've been down that road too many times--Eschmeyer, Najera, LaFrentz, Marquis.

So Sacremento's gonna end up with a team of Mikki Moore, Ron Artest and Drew Gooden and they'll take turns being the point guard. Sounds delicious.

BTW I don't give up Daniel Gibson if I'm the Cavs. (I don't call him that stupid nickname "Boobie")
