He and Dirk on Malone are the single biggest matchups that the mavs have in their favor. Nellie should start Jamison and give him ALOT of minutes.
What's the point if you have no, or statistically no chance, of beating the Lakers to begin with? We could trade AJ for Rigadeau and start Frenchie and it still wouldn't affect the results of the games with the Fakers that much if any. Under the right circumstances I think AJ could make a difference, just don't see it happening here unless other circumstances change.

If "other circumstances" = Nellie, then you might be right.

If "other circumstances" = Shaq, then you might be wrong or right. But its still a maybe since we have not jelled yet.

If "other circumstances" = anything else, then you could be wrong. As far as stats go, it has been said many times that the Big Five have the best +/- stats in the NBA. So I think they can compete, its just a matter of getting their mindset right. If Nellie plays the Big Five, they just may be able to have enough confidence through successful past performance to overcome Nellie's underdog approach.

The benefit of Nellie being an underdog coach(a coach that tells the truth) is that when your team finally does turn the corner... and Nellie tells them that they HAVE turned the corner... what effect do you think that will have?

As long as you have a coach who insists on starting a 6'2" career bench player over a 6'9" carreer starter when you know your team needs inside scoring and rebounding and a good start, then I don't see much difference. So your start AJ as the 3 and Best at the 5. We still get killed.

The major downside it that this may keep your team from ever turning the corner.

That is just defeatist. lol Lying doesn't make your team better. It does the opposite actually.

I think being honest will always win out over the alternative. You might get a, minute short term victory BSIng your team but relaity will come crashing down soon enough... and then what are you left with?

You don't have to lie to your team. You have to believe in them. I don't think lying works either, but Jimmy Johnson didn't know for sure his Cowboys would beat the 49'ers but he sure as hell believed they would. If Jimmy didn't believe, and just stated what a damn good team the 49ers were and how he was scared sh!tless to watch tape of them would the cowboys have won? We'll never know for sure, but I wouldn't have bet on it. Case in point, the next year after Jimmy leaves they get Barry Switzer and kill themselves with mental mistakes.

I don't think you can compare the NBA to the NFL AT ALL. There are way more flukes and upsets in football. You don't have 7 game series in football. Also... talent isn't as big a deal in football because you have so many players on each team. You can have the collective beat the individual in footbal through just sheer tenacity... but not in a 7 game series of baskeball.

How do you know Nellie doesn't believe in his team? I have never heard nellie say he doesn't believe in his team.
