Default Parker doubtful in game against Mavs

Tony Parker got hurt in practice today and is listed as doubtful against the Mavs for the season opener.

Pop was quoted that he stepped on somebody during practice and rolled his ankle pretty badly.

I'll keep you posted on any further developments. Without Parker, Spurs have absolutely no chance.

You heard it here first: Tony Parker will play!!!! He's okay!!!! Get this out to the media so they don't turn him into the 2nd coming of Jesus like they do with Wade every playoff.

full story:

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Spurs guard Tony Parker sprained his right ankle in practice Monday and is questionable to play in San Antonio's season opener this week.

X-rays showed that Parker's ankle wasn't broken, Spurs spokesman Cliff Puchalski said. He added that doctors expect to know by Tuesday whether Parker will be able to play Thursday against the Dallas Mavericks.

The Spurs will face Cleveland on Friday in their home opener.

Puchalski said Parker was doing drills Monday when he took a shot and landed on someone's foot. He didn't know if the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Parker would practice Tuesday.

Parker averaged 18.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game last season.

In San Antonio's final preseason game last Friday against Dallas, Parker scored 20 points in the Spurs' 100-79 victory.

Well that just sucks. I really wanted to see how we would fare against the Spurs with both teams at full strength. Now we almost HAVE to win or we look really weak.

Not making excuses--I'm just the messenger.

No point guard=tough to see how SA has a chance against the WC Champs.

But we'll see.

Latest from SA Express News regarding Parker and game against Mavs:

Parker's status uncertain for opener

Web Posted: 10/30/2006 06:30 PM CST

Johnny Ludden
Express-News Staff

The Spurs had just beaten Dallas Friday night to close out their exhibition schedule, and coach Gregg Popovich didn't need long to point out the team's biggest accomplishment of the preseason.

“Everybody's healthy,” Popovich said. “Hopefully we can keep it that way next week when we go up to Dallas.”

That task became more difficult Monday after Tony Parker sprained his right ankle during practice. X-rays were negative, but the Spurs want to see how Parker responds overnight before determining whether he'll have to miss Thursday's season opener in Dallas.

“He did a decent job on it,” Popovich said.

Parker rolled his ankle after stepping on a teammate's foot during the Spurs' scrimmage. He initially tried to walk off the pain, but needed some help leaving the court.

“We still have three days before the game,” Manu Ginobili said, “so we're trying to be optimistic.”

If Parker can't play, Beno Udrih will likely start at point guard. Udrih returned last week after missing most of the preseason with a sore right hamstring. Jacque Vaughn and Brent Barry can back him up.

“Beno's coming along pretty quickly,” Popovich said. “He's working himself into shape and now it's really important he keeps doing that and doesn't re-injure that hamstring.

“We've really gone slowly with him to make sure when he came back, he had strength. But he feels pretty good. Hopefully that will continue.”

Parker has already overcome one injury in the past three months. He broke his right index finger in August while playing for France's national team and wasn't cleared to resume working out until a few days before training camp opened.

Aside from sometimes being a little tentative to go for a steal, Parker hasn't had any problems with his finger. He was the Spurs' best player during the preseason, averaging 17.2 points and 4.8 assists in 22.7 minutes. He shot 69.6 percent from the field and missed only one of his 25 free throws.

“It's bad timing,” Michael Finley said. “We want everybody to be as healthy as possible starting the season.

“Hopefully, it's something minor and he can get over it.”

Parker has been pretty durable throughout his career. He's missed only two games because of injury (a bruised right shin and a left quadriceps contusion) in the past two seasons.

Parker did sit out the first seven games of the 2003-04 season after spraining his left ankle in an exhibition game. He also missed five games midway through his rookie year with a sprained right ankle.

Unlike other teams, the Spurs have remained relatively healthy during the preseason. Udrih and Eric Williams are the only two players to miss any time because of injuries.

“You can't be thinking about your ankles or your knees all the time when you're playing,” Ginobili said. “You just try to do the best you can, but you play aggressive and try to win, even in practice. That's what happens when you play hard.

“We were just lucky during the whole preseason.”

NOTEBOOK: Finley returned to practice Monday after a stomach virus caused him to miss Friday's exhibition game against Dallas. “It was a 24-hour thing,” Finley said. “It literally came in and went out.” …Popovich on the passing of former Boston coach Red Auerbach: “It just boggles your mind what he accomplished. But more than that, when you hear the stories of all those former players about what a character he was and what a great manager he was of people -- how he got people to do the things they needed to do, regardless of ego -- you realize what a special guy he was. He's like an icon in basketball. You just lost one of the most colorful people in the game.” …The Spurs won a franchise-record 65 games, but lost to Dallas in seven games in the Western Conference finals in EA Sports' NBA Live video-game simulation of the 2006-07 season. The Mavericks beat Cleveland in the NBA Finals. Popovich was Coach of the Year. …All Spurs' games shown on KENS-5 this season, including Friday's home opener against Cleveland, will be broadcast in HDTV.

Obviously without Parker that's a big blow to the Spurs game but I seem to remember Udrih and Vaughn kicking our ass on Friday too. Not to mention that Ginobli and Barry can run the point too. It's not like they're stuck without a pg entirely.

There was some talk that Parker would play in the Cleveland game the next night so I'd be surprised if he's not ready to go against the Mavs.

Pop likes to play head games though, so whether Parker's ready or not, I doubt he plays. If he holds Parker out and the Spurs lose then he's got something to use as motivation the next time they play, plus the win ends up feeling hollow to the Mavs because they didn't beat a full strength Spurs team. If the Spurs somehow win without Parker then there's a big early season statement going the other way.

It's unfortunate because we as fans all want to see our team's best versus the other team's best. But Popovich coaches the regular season solely to prepare his team for the post season so giving us the exciting opening night game we all want to see isn't high on his list of priorities.

This is not about posturing.

Its about a guy who was hurt so much he could not walk off the court on his own power--who went to the ER for tests--but who is a competitor and who may not play at all against the Mavs and who may only be fair in the home opener against the Cavs.

BTW--news flas just now--NBA and Larry Brown issue has been resolved--details tomorrow.

The teams are so evenly matched when both are full strength.

But what happens if Parker sits it out...

...and the Spurs still win?

Hopefully he plays. I like to see teams go at each other at full strength.

Can't say I'll miss his irritating whiny faces though. For the Spurs to be such a formidable team they sure do have a lot of pouters.

You guys are really touchy these days.

Grab a beer--relax.

Have some Halloween candy.

I only reported that Parker was hurt and doubtful for the season opener.

I would think that anyone--whether a Spurs or a Mavs fan--would understand that without Parker, the chances of a Spurs win against a team like the Mavs would plummet.

Okay--lets see--we can even things us if you'd like. Tell JET to stay home.

...this means nothing. JET's just as valuable to us as Parker is to San Antonio, and he was suspended one game in the playoffs that we almost won.

And even if this is an "excuse," we meet again later this month.

As of last night the Spurs were still saying Parker is doubtful for the opener.

Default Tony Parker Possible Out Thusday

SAN ANTONIO -- Spurs guard Tony Parker didn't practice Tuesday and remains questionable to play in San Antonio's season opener this week after spraining his right ankle during drills a day earlier.

X-rays showed his ankle wasn't broken, a team spokesman said.

San Antonio opens its season Thursday against the Dallas Mavericks.

The Spurs will face Cleveland on Friday in their home opener.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Parker was doing drills Monday when he took a shot and landed on someone's foot.

Parker averaged 18.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game last season.

In San Antonio's final preseason game Friday against Dallas, Parker scored 20 points in the Spurs' 100-79 victory.
