The next step is for Avery to unleash that weapon. It's what makes Dirk who he is.
Don't be scared, Avery. A three-point shot taken by someone besides Stack or Terry CAN be a good shot.

Just got back from the game... what a feeling.
Did anyone else feel like Dirk and Devin finally just blew off Avery's stagnant offense and just did what they do best?
Devin can drive on anyone on the Warriors and Dirk should shoot when he's open outside. He is a 40% 3 point shooter. On most teams that would make you a specialist and we try to limit his attempts.
GO MAVS!!!

I truthfully believe that AJ has beaten the spontaneous part of Dirk's game out of him... Why? I don't know.

On the way home I actually heard Avery praise Dirk for his ability to get others involved when he gets doubled. Isn't that all Dirk was trying to say yesterday when Avery threw him under the bus?

His first 46 minutes were solid actually. His last couple minutes were godly.

Just got back from the game. I gotta say, that was the most intense game I've ever been to. I'll save details for ddh3's post game thread, but Dirk proved once again tonight that this team will only go as far as he carries them.

I suspect G6 will be a close game but i have a feeling Terry is gonna hit a big-shot in the final seconds.

Dirk was significantly more aggressive early in this game. It was a visible difference from all the way in the upper deck. They periodically solved the problem of him being fronted, after he'd forced them to front him by taking the ball to the middle off the dribble and spinning baseline during the first quarter.
There were still plenty of times in the third quarter and most of the fourth when Dirk wasn't getting touches - but tonight, it was Murph's reality - Dirk worked hard all night and when he disappeared, it was because his teammates were losing their minds.

Wow. Just wow. I know that Dirk didn't score 10 points in less than a minute to win this game (like T-Mac did against the Spurs a few years ago), but he did score 10 points in the last 3 minutes, he stole a basket from GSW by blocking a layup attempt, and he willed this team to victory when it was mere minutes away from having its season brutally ended. Kudos to Dirk.
And I'll admit that since I couldn't get on this forum, I was on another forum wondering where in the h*ll Dirk was in the 4th quarter while Devin Harris and Croshere tried to keep up with the Warriors. For the first 9 minutes of the 4th, he had zero shot attempts. ZERO! This to follow on 2 shot attempts in the 3rd quarter. I couldn't watch the game, but others were saying how he was not even acting involved, how he was shrinking from the action, etc. I couldn't believe that Mavs season was probably going to end without any effort from Dirk.
But he didn't go out that way. I couldn't tell from the radio broadcast whether he gave a solid effort for the first 45 minutes --- I'd say he had a solid 1st half, and then he just disappeared until the last 3 minutes or so (and I'd love to know more about his disappearing act). But at this point, it doesn't matter. He showed up for the 3 minutes that mattered most tonight, and the Mavs get a flight to Oakland as a reward.

He didn't disappear from a lack of effort. He disappeared mainly because the Mavs refused to throw an entry pass to him. He was calling for the ball and getting good position.. Actually, he was getting deeper position tonight than he has ever gotten consistently in a game in my opinion.

Yeah, it wasn't his fault he wasn't getting shot attempts. They weren't involving him in the offense for some reason, so then he finally decided enough was enough and flat out took over.
Btw, major props to Devin tonight, he played a DARN good game tonight.

Yes. Avery is really losing my ass in this series. He's driving me nuts.

A few things I think highlight the game...
1. Unbelievable game
2. Dirk began to play like the MVP
3. Devin played on a different level
4. We started driving the ball to the hole, hence a 21pt lead...
5. We should have kept driving the ball to the hole
6. We should have never made this game close
7. Then, we should have never won this game
8. I think this is a mirror image of game 4(little w's should not have won)
9. I believe it's better we won the way we did, instead of winning by 20...The warriors were close but oh, so far
10. JET said it best: "This next game could be on the moon. We're not scared of anyone."
11. One game at a time.
12. Oakland will be tough, but I think we have had our wakeup call.
13. Let's win on Thurs. and then well, it may be the most amazing playoff game ever
14. I rather them keep shooting 3's (I know it sounds crazy) then kill us in the paint. Case in point, the shots will not always fall...
MAVS IN 7!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Mavs!!

Nope, it was game 7 against the Spurs. He said that's what drove him to make the And 1.

.... Alot of you have questioned Dirk's ability to hit clutch shots and clutch FT's late in the game..
Don't forget that Dirk hit the game winning FT's with less than a minute to go.. Just keeping score for those of you that bitched and moaned for the missed FT or two in the middle of the regular season.

Word. The radio announcers a couple of times in the 4th quarter mentioned that the Mavs' perimeter players weren't giving Dirk a chance to get open, and instead were moving the ball around the perimeter in a method counterproductive to getting him the ball. I'm sure it must have been frustrating.
I still am having difficulty coming to terms with the fact that it took Dirk 8.5 minutes to take his first shot attempt in the 4th quarter...forget about the other 4 players on the court for one second --- how does AJ let that happen?

I loved the lob passes and backdoor cuts with Dirk. We need to try work that out more often because it was really working when we went to it, and it's alway going to be there with Golden St. fronting Dirk and aggressively playing the passing lanes. But I also agree with chum, let's let Dirk shoot a few threes in the first 45 minutes of the game.

is it me or is dirk's defense under rated? Dirk isnt the best one on one defender but in team defense i'd say he's right up there. that block at the end was unreal

He said "swimming" in the on-court interviews in both game 5's, and said "slipping" in the post-game conference after Game 7 in San Antonio.
