Default Welcome to JJ Redick and Nicolo Melli

Can someone spin the JJ trade into a better positive than I see it as right now? I'm underwhelmed. 13m next year at 38, even if you take away the age, I'd almost rather have gambled on hypnotizing a player to come here in free agency.

I worried that they would turn Johnsons expiring and THJ expiring into... THJs new contract.

I'm pretty sure he's a free agent this offseason

He signed a 2 year deal with New Orleans on July 15th 2019

So we traded a useless player for one that MIGHT have a use. I'm not worried about the 2nd round pick because we don't really have a grade on this year's rookies so having ANOTHER young player would be hard to fit onto the roster

JJ is an unrestricted free agent after this year and Mavs have early bird rights to re-sign him. He’s also 36. He’ll turn 37 in this offseason. He won’t turn 38 until the season after.

The trade is basically 17 million expiring for 17 mill expriring and a pick so it’s just Redick, who we actually want for a second-rounder.

2019-2020 - 13.5mill
2020-2021 - 13.9 mill

Melli also has no guaranteed money next year. We can give him a QO of 4 mill and make him a restricted FA or we can simply let him walk to clear cap. Our overall cap space is unaffected unless we decide to offer Redick a contract over the veteran minimum next season.

I saw one of the internet sportswriters *gag* say that he had another year left too so fake news is real. Fortunately Sportrac is great for the real info

Mavs now have players from 8 different countries:

Slovenia, Italy, Australia, Latvia, Canada, Germany, the US, and Serbia

And the owner is Cuban

Early bird, but I don’t anticipate we want to pay Redick 24 mill a year or sign a 36-year-old to a five year contract so early birds are just as good.

We can let JJ walk, immediately re-sign him for the vet min (2.5m), or fill to cap and then re-sign him with early bird. All three of those options give us the same cap space as we would have had before the trade

Honestly I think the guy who was most hurt by the Redick acquisition is going to be Burke. We just got a guy who does Burke's role better.

I like the JJ signing. He will be the sharp shooter ala Peja. I didn't like losing two defensive minded players. I am not sure if people realize that Melli is 6'8 not 6'10 like Maxi. I think Luka will bring out the best in these two. I think all the Mavs players outside of KP are being elevated by playing with Luka.

Why isn't there a thread specific to the trade only?

Agreed. And I really like Burke. He plays his ass off, especially on defense he gets up on his guy. Hope he can find minutes still but its crowded.

He has been a huge dud in the US.

He was Pelicans' version of Antoine Rigadeau-- he was an older Euro player (28 years old) who they thought would be amazing. He was an amazing shooter in Europe who shot 46% one year and had a few seasons of 40%+

In his two years in the USA, he hasn't been good, but he dropped 28 against Luka's team in Europe and Pelicans are bad. Mavs have better spacing and the offense is much more European flow offense.

Honestly not expecting much, but he's zero risk as a QO player. If we like him, we give him a QO and make him a restricted FA. If he sucks, we decline and clear that 4 mill cap hold and never see him again.

I seem to remember seeing him have a hot game against someone.

Looking at his game-by-games for the last two years, he has a handful of 20-pt games, but none against the Mavericks or Knicks, which would've the most likely teams I'd have watched him play against.

As a 30-year old second-year guy, he may surprise. Not like he'll be a bewildered rook.

So apparently they made this move without even knowing for how long JJ is out, and now they found out is more than they expected. Great stuff

I was disappointed yesterday when I thought the trade fell through for Nicolo Melli. Also I don't understand why the Pelicans made the trade. It does not save them any money. Can anyone clue me in? Mavs saved some money though and imho got players who they may actually play over guys that they have not.

He was going to be bought out if they couldn't get a pick

I still like the trade. Gave up an unhappy Johnson, a barely NBA player, a pick that had almost no chance of being something, and some of Cubans cash for Reddick and Melli

But man it stings that he’s going to be out a while. Looks more and more like he may only play a couple of games before the PO and just be a playoff rental

Pelicans got cash and a second rounder. They are one of the teams that has lost major money this season so that 5mill helps.

The pick is not going to be good— late second most likely, but it’s also SOMETHING and Redick probably would have walked to Brooklyn for nothing so at least they get closer to the black and have a pick to show for it.

I worried that they would turn Johnsons expiring and THJ expiring into... THJs new contract.
Also here's where I have a problem with the Redick trade

How many guys do we have to keep trying to hide on defense come playoff time?

This is why we struggle already too many non defenders in the rotation. Would have preferred combo guards like Hill or Teague who can offer a combination of shooting, defense and ball handling as opposed to Redick.

Mavsmoneyball
There’ll be issues on defense, for sure. The Mavericks will have to devise ways to hide him on bad shooters, and there might be matchups where Redick will struggle to get minutes. And there’s the issue of his current heel injury. But overall this should help the Mavericks. James Johnson and Wes Iwundu weren’t playing at all, and Redick brings a skill Dallas desperately needs.

The pick is not going to be good— late second most likely, but it’s also SOMETHING and Redick probably would have walked to Brooklyn for nothing so at least they get closer to the black and have a pick to show for it.
Thank you. Also seems like everyone is following my sister's family to Brooklyn. Seriously, she moved her family there. Then all of these NBA players want to go there too. She is by no means an NBA fan btw. I'm the only one in my family passionate about basketball. Well, my 2nd cousin Jeff Turner is a retired NBA player. There is that I guess.

Aren't we likely to lose Josh Richardson this summer also? He is an unrestricted free agent.

Heel. Don't expect him much until just before playoffs. A pesky injury.

I hope that's not the case

They just can't expect a guy to hit the ground running just before the playoffs.

Hopefully, this guy will pull a Blake Griffin and all of sudden be 100% since he's out of New Orleans.

JJ Redick on his
@OldManAndThree
podcast re: trade to Dallas from NOLA:

- Says he made a trade request in November before the season around the time of Jrue trade

- Knew what was coming with Stan's defensive schemes

- Had convos with Griff and Trajan.

- If family came to NOLA, kids would have to quarantine for a week when they got back to Brooklyn

- Says Griff basically told him, "Come down for a month, if you still want out, I give you my word, I'll get you to a situation you like"

- Had 4 convos after this directly w Griff

-Redick: "Obviously, he did not honor his word."

- Says his understanding once after he wasn't traded at aggregate deadline was that he was going to get a buyout or traded to a team in the Northeast

-Redick: "I look at the buyout situation not as Oh I'm going to get bought and go to Brooklyn. I just wanted to be able to, on an off day, go see my family and be within driving distance."

-@talter asks "Why should any player trust this organization"

-Redick: "I don't think you're going to get honesty from that front office, objectively speaking. That's not an opinion, I just don't think you're gonna get that. I don't think what happened with me is necessarily an isolated incident. I think front offices around the league operate in their best interest. I get that. I understand that. Truthfully I think I was a little naive thinking I was in Year 15 and I attempted to do things right throughout my career. But in terms of this front office, yeah, it's not something where I would expect certainly the agents who worked on this with me to ever trust that front office again."

- Says he was "jarred" by the trade; says Mavs weren't one of the teams that had been discussed

- Told Cuban: "In any other year, I'd be thrilled to get traded to Dallas."

-Redick shouts out several members of the organization for giving him a great experience while he was in New Orleans.

Would not be surprised at all if Mavs buy out Redick.

Entitled bitching by Redick.

Pretty sure the second he offers to give up a significant part of the salary the Pelicans would have bought him out.

But no, he wanted most of the bag AND the buyout to cherry pick his next team.

Always liked Redick but I'd probably rather have the 2nd round pick back.

I saw the podcast and I didn't see anything wrong with what Redick said. All he said was this all started when nobody knew when the season would start then the NBA said boom it's xmas day and his son started kindergarten in Brooklyn so he requested a trade between that and knowing how stan ran the team with holiday gone his minutes would go down. He said nothing against Dallas he just wanted to be closer to his family as right now with how covid testing is done his kids have to take 2 weeks off school just to see him briefly after quarantine period.

Edit-
More importantly his tone wasn't one of someone pissed off. He was laughing and he joked while laughing saying mavs fans cool the f out he's progressing his rehab and he hopes to provide veteran leadership to the team.
