Wizards Acquire Center Brendan Haywood In Exchange for Laron Profit and Future First Round Pick

Haywood averaged 12.3 ppg as a senior at UNC.

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 1 - Washington Wizards President of Basketball Operations Michael Jordan announced today that the Wizards have acquired the draft rights to 7-foot center Brendan Haywood from the Orlando Magic in exchange for guard Laron Profit and a future first round pick.

"We are excited to bulk up our front line," said Jordan. "Brendan brings height and shot blocking ability to the Wizards. His defensive presence will also be felt when he is on the floor."

The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted Haywood in the first round (20th) of the 2001 NBA Draft, then traded his draft rights to Orlando in exchange for Michael Doleac. He played four years at the University of North Carolina, from 1997 until 2001, averaging 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. He was named Honorable Mention All-America by the Associated Press as a senior and finished his collegiate career as the ACC's all-time field goal percentage leader at .637. Haywood is North Carolina's all-time leading shot blocker with 304 career blocks.

Laron Profit played two seasons for the Wizards, after originally being drafted by the Magic in the second round (38th) of the 1999 NBA Draft. The Wizards acquired Profit on 9/22/99 in exchange for a second round pick. He averaged 3.1 points and 1.8 assists, and 1.3 rebounds in 65 games. Profit posted a career-high 18 points, eight rebounds and seven steals vs. Houston on 3/31/01. He also matched his career-high in points at Atlanta on 4/17/01.
