nick van exel was the spark on the road last year and the reason we had such a good road record...dampier would be great but i don't want to have to take on nve(even if it was possible) just for that

but this year he's got really really creaky knees..play a few games, sit out some more..ala pippen

i don't want to take that chance..gotta get ostertag this year and move out a couple big contracts(one of the toine/tawn's or dare i say, finley *gasp* and tariq)..sign nash to a decent deal, not the max but just under like bibby

or hell, keep signing FA's to the max if cuban can afford it

--GDubya...please find those naughty weapons of mass destruction...create jobs in the US...find some good arms for the Ranger's pitching staff...and then came back and tell us EXACTLY where you found that rule...

You can fake it some other place...but not here.

P AMERICAN ..it is a "end of season" rule, not a "one year" rule

DDH ...my educated guess is that it is a rule designed to eliminate the possibility of "circumvention" of the cap rules by trades with teams over the cap. This keeps 2 teams from trading back and forth and "ratcheting up" the cap limits of money going one way or the other, using the 115% allowance.

OP ...who are you asking - i guess you meant proud american? He obviously was quoting the item from the DMN or the FWST, which was close but inaccurate, as we have discussed.

Sike, why trade him? You owe it to him to help him stay 'cause he's helping you WIN THE BET against Dude.

I dont see a lot so far that impresses me, with Ainge's GM and deal-making results. So I am not persuaded that Boston got the BEST deal for Walker - rather, I am more inclined to think that this was the best AINGE could get for him. Ainge trashed him, slammed him as a player, then tried to find someone to make a good offer for him - sorry, but "deal making" in the NBA is the same as any other biz: salesmanship matters. Everyone knew that Ainge wanted badly to ditch Walker, at any reasonable price, and they had to think: apparently he knows something bad that I dont know.

Contrast that salesmanship with the salesmanship when Cuban peddled Juwan Howard to Denver or when NVE was sent to GS - the other team grabbed a "key Mavs player" in each case, rather than someone who was seen as trade bait.

And even at that, Boston got a fairly strong package for Walker, on the face of it. They got Welsch, whom they wanted a lot. They got Raef, who many figured would (and still might) be a top-tier C in the East (with his shooting, shot blocking, and finesse for a C) and who is still fairly young. They got rid of Delk's contract. They got Mills as a big cap-reducer. And they got a #1.

With Cuban's salesmanship, plus the fact that Walker this year is slimmed down, more athletic, and has exhibted greater teamwork, it is very logical to think the Mavs could get a good return for him if they chose to trade him.
PE, I agree with you about Ainge's incompetence as a GM. But since he is the GM for Boston, I still believe that is the best deal Boston could get at the time. Walker was being shopped, so I would have to assume that other teams weren't offering a better package than Dallas. You said other teams may have thought "what does Ainge know about Walker that I don't". What changes their mind if Dallas offers him in a trade a few months after they get him?

You said Boston got a "fairly strong" package for Walker. I don't agree with that. Could they have done worse? Sure. But I think you would have to agree that this was a very lopsided trade in favor of Dallas, contract and talent wise.

On the marketing factor, agree 100%. If anyone can get top value out of a player its Cuban. I just think Ainge really hurt AW's value by trading him for less than what he was worth. I mean to say, I would find it hard to believe that a team would offer more for AW than what they could have had him for in October. Hope I'm wrong.

SPEEDY ...I mostly agree with what you say. But what can change people's minds about AW is what they see him do on the court in a different context -ie, in Dallas.

I dont even know if the Mavs want to trade him. But the better he rebounds and dishes outs assists, and the more he cuts down on bad shots and turnovers, then the more teams will think "Ainge was a total idiot" and also "maybe Walker would be a great addition here."

This may be too soon to get top dollar for him - and they may want to keep him, regardless. But just like with NVE, in time he will shine here (because he does have loads of talent) and then what teams will pay will increase a lot.

Also, once we get to July, he will be one of those "last year" players that teams like, to reduce their cap. Combine that fact with his positive attitude here, plus combine that with good-to-excellent play (assuming that happens down the stretch) - and all of that could make him a hot commodity this summer if the Mavs want to take offers.
