Well..clearly the island is not back in the present.
I'll wait it see what others have to say.
I do have to admin, when Jack was talking to Ms. Hawing...the word "hokey" popped into my mind more than once. The shoe thing was pushing it.
Love to know who beat up Ben so bad.

That was the craziest episode ever, filled with crazy weird ass sh$t.
That thing with kate...wtf was that? WTF was that? She shows up, says "never ask me about Aaron again, let's F" and Jack just says "OK". Kate was so weird in this episode.
Hurley shows up for that plane, won't say why or who told him to be there...OK?
Sayid looks like he's being escorted by police to Guam? Huh? Ok?
I think those guys must have just flashed right off the plane, right? They just flew over the island and the island snatched them up?
Did Ben make it back?
Where's Locke? (I'm betting we won't know this for a while)
So they returned to the island in the 70's or 80's then... Is that when the island roller coaster stopped? Did they all settle down with DHARMA because it seemed like the best option? Jin looked pretty ho-hum on duty there, driving his DHARMA van around. I wonder how long the left-behinders have been living in that time?
And most of all....What happened to Ben? Who beat him up? He looked beat up pretty bad. He said he was going to tie up a loose end...a promise to an old friend...my first thought was "OMG He killed Penny". But that doesn't explain why he's all beat up. Still...
There were a lot of ploys in the writing for Jack to just accept it for what it is...a leap of faith...clearly they were asking the audience to make a leap of faith as well, because they really moved away from the realm of explaining things. The "re-creating the original crash" stuff just seemed very weird to me. And is that the only reason why John had to die? I hope that's not it.
Hurley buying all the seats on the plane...classic Hurley.
My brain hurts.

My roommate said when he said he had to fulfill a promise to an old friend that he meant killing Penny.
It's possible he went to go do that, but Desmond got in the way. They fought, and that's why he's beat up. Who knows what the result of the fight was.

Obviously we'll get answers to the majority of these things. But I have to say, this episode wasn't great for me. It was just so disjointed. So bizarre.
Maybe we've just been spoiled by getting more answers than questions lately.
BTW, that guy that Hurley told to fasten his seatbelt is not an extra. He's been in a few things. I have to believe we'll see him again at some point. So I'm not sure just the Losties were snatched off the plane.

So I wasn't alone in thinking he was killing Penny...then I thought, hey maybe he killed Desmond, but Ben knows that Desmond is special, I don't think he'd kill Desmond.
THis is all speculation of course...
I loved that moment in the beginning when Jack asked Ben if he knew about "this place". I laughed out loud before Ben even answered in anticipation of his lie.

I'm not spoiled on anything this season...and so much the better, let me tell you.
As to the whole "they're going back sooner rather than later thing" I think I made my reasons clear on that this afternoon:

edit: Also, one of the last things Ben says before they go into the church is "We're running out of time". I think this thing is going down soon.
|
But even I was shocked to see an actual on island scene with them tonight. The way that thing started tonight was shocking.

I was so scared Desmond was going to get hit in the face with the pendulum and screw everything up!

There are real experiments with pendulums like that. But I think all they're meant to do is demonstrate the rotation of the Earth.

But really..... snatched off the plane? Wouldn't that bring attention to the Island? That would be hokey.

They definitely moved into the realm of hokey a little last night.
I wonder if the show will settle down a little now. The evidence of Charlotte telling Daniel that he's going to talk to little-girl-her, seeing Daniel in the Orchid construction, and seeing as how Jin has gotten himself into the DHARMA initiative as well...seems like they've been in that time for a while...err...will be in that time for a while.
What is the plot now? Now that they're back? Anybody know?

I'm going to withhold judgement on this episode for a while.

yeah, this was a transition episode - they tried to explain things, but made it sound more ridiculous and hokey. Hawking is much better when she doesn't talk much.
If this whole show is about Christian Shephard being pissed about having to wear white tennis shoes, and he's doing all this to get his nice shoes back... i'm not sure what i'd think.

and i agree - that other guy in first class is now on the island. They would not have made a point to give him lines if he was just a random extra.

Yeah, he must be one of Bens people. I thought we'd see that Jill character come along as well, but I guess not.
I seriously don't know what this is about any more. Jack thought they were going back to save their friends...Jin doesn't look like he needs saving to me. (Other than his wardrobe).
In the mean time our characters need something to do. Are they going to try to get back to their own time?

Useless fact: The name of the last chapter in the book that Ben was reading on the plane (Ulysses) is "Penelope".

This was definitely the worst episode this season. The cheese factor alone was off the charts.... the shoes (must of got mixed in? puhleeze), jack gets back to his house and hears a noise yet doesn't turn on any lights when he goes to investigate?, the flashing on the plane, the "he wasn't worth a new pair of shoes" speech, how supposedly TSA recovered the letter from Lockes body and had it delivered to him on the plane?
vomit
I will assume the cheesy lines/behavior by Kate, Sun, etc. will be explained away somehow I'm guessing by Widmore getting them involved somehow.

I think they wrote themselves into a corner.
I hope they're out of it now.
I assume the weird Sayid/Kate/Hurley and Ben being beaten up stuff were done such that we're going to have more traditional flashback/present style storytelling at some point this season. There's 4 episodes worth of flashbacks right there with those people.

The "find dad's shoes at random grampa's place" bit was way too forced...

I think Penelope is dead.
There were some golden moments to this show though.... Ben's evil "Who cares?", his comment about his mother teaching him to read. Jin's hair is long so he had to be there awhile. Unless he was previously on the Island and doesn't age like Richard? No that couldn't be.... he recognized them didn't he.
I wonder though if the Island stopped turning when John turned the wheel.... and thats how Dharma is still there... because future Ben that kills them is off the Island now? And Jin didn't immediately recognize them because it has been along time for him? But then again he hasn't aged if that is true.

More things "recreated" besides Locke being dead...adding Christian Shephard's shoes
This is all probably a huge coincidence but...
Sayid = in handcuffs & escorted like Kate in Oceanic flight
Hurley has guitar like Charlie in Oceanic flight
Sun has Jin's ring in Oceanic flight
Ben w/glasses = reading like Sawyer?

Well, that's hardly a useless fact. Penny is named after Penelope from the Odyssey (which Ulysses takes its name from). I'm sure you've all read Homer, but Penelope was Odysseus's wife who waited for him for 10 years after he disappeared following the end of the Trojan War.

I have not loved the last two episodes...feels like this show is leaning dangerously close to sci-fi.....and you don't come back from that folks.
I trust the writers...for now.

So Jack either has his suit, or his dad's coffin.
For a bit I thought...what does Kate have that makes her trip back to the island similar to the original Oceanic flight?
My final theory: Kate's bringing a baby that she conceived the night before from Jack.

The show was sci fi from day one...they just didn't reveal how much until now. They were always on this course to the show you see now, all sci-fi'd up. If you don't like sci-fi, you don't like LOST.

Ok, so while I'm still confused as always, why does everyone think Penny died? That just sounds freakin' random, but maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

Yeah, I was thinking about it and I remember that scene now. But I really had to think about it after somebody mentions it. What gets me is how apparently in the middle of an episode, we get a cryptic "I need to tie up a loose end" from Ben and everyone suddenly remembers this one scene from at least a season ago.

Well I remember it because a little bit of me each episode wonders back to that. It's not really a sidenote..... Penny is central to one of the most intriguing characters on the show and for her to be killed by another central character would be a big deal.
If that wasn't it, then it's something we haven't heard about.... obviously. But that's the only "loose end" that I know we are aware of.
