Default Diop Traded to Charlotte

For Matt Carroll and Ryan Hollins...

...according to Galloway there's another trade coming but they don't know who or when...

...now it sounds like that was just that was just Stein speculating. Nothing else is imminent.

Wow... I would have preferred Felton, but I think we can use Carroll's shooting. Also, I can't believe that we were able to get out of that Diop contract so quickly. That alone is a very good thing.

I guess those reports that Charlotte wanted Diop in the off-season were accurate. I thought they might have been rumors intended to increase his value in free agency (I didn't think he had much after his play in New Jersey).

Does anyone know anything about Ryan Hollins?

Hmm... checking Carroll's stats, it appears he is shooting only .279 from 3-point range, after two seasons of shooting over .400. I remember some strong play from him two seasons ago, when he averaged around 12 per game. It looks like he's played very poorly for Larry Brown this season. Let's hope he finds his shot again.

As for Hollins... stats look mediocre, but superior to Diop's. He shoots .543 as opposed to Diop's .379 (really abysmal for a center).

Looks like we're down to 1 center again.

Until Hollins proves me otherwise, he will back up Damp right?

Sources: Mavs agree to trade Diop
By Marc Stein
ESPN.com
Archive

Diop
The Dallas Mavericks and Charlotte Bobcats have reached an agreement in principle on a new trade after last week's collapse of a three-way deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to NBA front-office sources.
This one, however, does not involve Bobcats guard Raymond Felton.
Sources told ESPN.com on Friday that the Mavericks and Bobcats are close to completing a deal that would send Dallas center DeSagana Diop to Charlotte for guard Matt Carroll and center Ryan Hollins.

I think this means that instead of unloading Diops contract and also picking up a potential all-star (Felton), the Mavs unloaded the Diop contract in exchange for some loose ends. I don't expect this to have much impact on the floor this season at all - it will clear cap space for this summer though.

Anything for Diop is a good deal. Well anything that isn't fat, slow, underproductive, and arguably the most over-paid player in the league.

Felton would have cleared up more space. He's a restricted free agent after this season that you could have let walk.

Carroll is making 13 mil over the next three seasons with a player option for 12/13. It's interesting to see that his contract was front loaded. It declines in value which is very rare in the NBA. His player option at the end is only for 3.5 mil.

Diop is due 26 mil over the next four seasons (technically the last year is a player option for 7mil, but anyone think he's turning that down?) so they saved a ton of cash and hopefully Caroll's shooting will actually help the team somewhat.

Some people will dislike this trade because of getting rid of a center, but those people fail to realize that Bass had aready become the backup center.

Getting out of that horrendous Diop contract is a fantastic deal, period.

At least Hollins shoots Fts at 67% this year. Diop at 44% is Shaq-like. Carroll being 6'6" and a shooter could also help at SG. I think with JKidd at PG you will see Carroll's shooting touch come back.

This doesn't light my pants on fire. In fact my pants are pretty flame retardant.

But thig is right. They need to get this thing finalized before Charlotte realizes exactly what they're getting themselves into.

Of course, knowing our luck, Diop will go to Charlotte and bloom into a 2 time MVP for no good reason at all.

Solid deal.

I think Carroll can really help this team. He's a good shooter, and he's better at driving than you might think.

Hollins can't be a downgrade from Diop, at this point. He's an athlete, and he's a better finisher than Diop. That should play well with Kidd's strengths.

I think more things are coming, but I thought this was a pretty solid deal, even if it isn't that significant.

before this trade was announced, someone at db.com posted that a source he has texted him that a trade went down today.

the same person also said this is not the only move the mavs are going to make.

Eh, Felton was too good to be true. Not even MJ is that dumb.

Another trade is almost definitely coming imo so, we'll see.

I am hoping that Carroll and Hollins raise the basketball IQ for the Mavs. Sometimes I think the raw stupidity of some players (think JHo, Stack) is one of the Mavs most significant limiting factors.

Hollins may actually get some burn for this team. He's athletic, he can play very well in a fast break system, and he's a decent shot blocker.

This is a good deal for the Mavs. Ryan Hollins can actually catch the ball and finish. He has nice size as well. He can be a better guy paired with Dirk than Diop could be.

And Carroll isn't shooting that great but is a younger Mike Miller. And a guy who can actually hit the 3 is a pice that the Mavs need on the bench. They still need a starting 2 guard and a low post player, but they increased their depth a lot.

If you think about it all Hollins would have to do is make 50% of his free throws and catch the ball 40% of the time and he would be giving the Mavs more than the 08-09 Diop.

Ok...my initial digestion of the deal:

Hollins seems pretty much like a project #3 center since Bass gets a lot of that burn as the backup center now. In his little action, he does board and can block. He's a project guy.

Carroll - I know you look at the numbers this year and say What, but I'm still looking at where he's been...the guy can shoot. Offensive punch is lacking, to say the least, so he can't necessarily hurt that, he can help.

I guess my question is where is he going to fit? Is he going to be our "starting" SG who plays the first 6-8 minutes and then Jet gets the bulk of the minutes?

Either way, you got out of Diop's deal and got some stuff back. Felton might have been more of an opportunity to get a bigger payoff off of Diop, but this is nice as well. Getting value off of Diop's deal is a MAJOR, MAJOR plus off of this deal.

I highly doubt we're done with deals though. Still got Stack who could apparently go to OKC or somewhere...they're ready to deal him. Still have Bass and/or Josh on the table.

Caroll was a legitimate, quality rotation guy before last season. Hopefully he can get back that level.

But let's not lose sight here...this is a salary dump.

He can score in the paint, that's for sure...

Surprisingly yes, I was...haha

Thanks for the concern from everyone and the PMs. I really appreciate it. I had some issues going on with my family, even my dog (!!!!), and some "stuff" but all situations that appeared to be dire or scary are completely averted and everything is fine.

Well, minus our Mavs.

Thanks you guys, I appreciate it.

This is not inspired. I'm fairly confident Brown will get more out of Diop than Diop showed this year. What we do with Carroll with our glut of 2's will be interesting.

Nice trade for the Mavs. Both players can help. We can really use Carroll's shooting. His pct. will go up for sure. Saw him for 4 yrs. at Notre Dame. He plays hard. Sorry Felton wasn't involved. Maybe that was just wishful thinking anyway. Seemed too good to be true.

He can basically do anything Diop didn't here.

I think MC can get some burn at the 3 as well.

Both players bring more production combined than Diop so, thats a +++++++++++.

Getting rid of Diop is a positive in itself.

Matt Carroll can shoot..so that's a thumbs up..we need one of those. Hopefully he gets back to what he was doing a couple years ago.

And Hollins is an athletic project..lets see if Carlisle can mold him into something valuable. Thumbs up from me.
