Wilson will be named interim head coach

Associated Press

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Stars on Friday fired coach Ken Hitchcock and reassigned general manager Bob Gainey.

The Stars have scheduled a news conference for this morning to announce the moves.

Assistant coach Rick Wilson will be named interim coach, and assistant general manager Doug Armstrong will take over immediately for Gainey, who moves into a consultant role.

The Stars are 23-17-6-4 and rank second in the Pacific Division and seventh in the Western Conference with 56 points.

I knew it was coming but I thought it wouldn't happen till the end of the year. That's what happens when you get in a fight with your best player...

I'm not a huge hockey fan, who'd Hitchcock get in a fight with? Modano?

Well, they definitly need a shake up. That's for sure.

I haven't been following the Stars as close this year as I usually do.

I thought Gainey retired at the beginnning of the year and he was replaced by the then assistant GM. Or he announced he was going to retire at the end of this year, something like that.

So that's what they talked about for 15 mins on the practice ice.

I'm not an insider, I heard it on the news.

Helluva shake up if you asked me......

So far tonight the shake up doesn't look like it's doin any good. Stars down 3-0 after 1 period.

We lost 6-1. I guess Hitchcock is glad he didn't have to sit through that game.

So who here actually thinks this is a _good_ move for the team?

It's only a good move if the Stars can win another championship. But since you can't fire the players...

It turns out Hitch is in good company. Larry Robinson of the Devils just got fired after winning the cup two years ago and taking it to game 7 last year. Coaches in the NHL have the shelf life of Dairy products.
