'Unacceptable,' Nellie Says
'Then Trade Them All!' Vescey Writes

By Mike Fisher -- DallasBasketball.com
Peter “The Viper’’ Vecsey has some compelling things to say about Dallas in his most recent New York Post gossip column – especially the part about the entire Mavs roster being on the trading block. VESCSEY’S CRAP
In addition to leaning toward a Michael Redd-to-Dallas move (Vecsey says Redd’s “deft touch, work ethic and worth to the team are incontestable’’), Vecsey is making some trades for the Mavs.
He writes: “Michael Finley. … is the big bait. … The push is on to also move Nick Van Exel, Avery Johnson and Evan Eschmeyer.’’
Good Lord, it’s a good thing the Mavs are waiting until after Sunday to pull off all of Peter’s myriad deals – otherwise, the Blue-White Scrimmage would’ve had to be re-named the “Blue Scrimmage.’’
Speaking of which. …
Boy, if Vecsey had ever actually interviewed anyone from the Mavs before writinf his Mavs scoops, think how juciy his stuff would be! Sunday’s Fan Jam at the American Airlines Center, featuring the Blue-White Scrimmage and won by the Blue, 78-67, left Nellie and a number of the fellas disappointed.
”Unacceptable,’’ Nellie calls the Mavs defensive work.
Yeah, but to the casual eye, the centers lived up to the staff’s camp raves. Shawn Bradley grabbed nine rebounds, scored eight points and looked interested (really). Evan Eschmeyer contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds and looked ready to bang.
Nellie, though, kept the pedal to the metal afterwards, voicing unhappiness over Bradley’s showing.
“I guess we better quit saying good things about him,’’ Nellie says.
Esch, by the way, is completely oblivious to the flood of trade rumors that always circle around his name. “It’s part of the business to get traded,’’ Esch says, “but it’s also part of the business to have people talking about trades that aren’t really going to happen. I pay no attention to it.’’
Raja Bell has the makings of a defensive ace in more ways than one; his style is so aggressive that we predict eventually, teammates will feed off of it. Eduardo Najera was also all cranked up, and Finley looked like a guy who played competitive basketball all summer, which of course he did, for Team USA in the Worlds. He led all scorers with 24.
But Fin also did his part afterwards, by voicing disastisfaction with his mates’ defense.
Says Finley: “On a scale of 1 to 10, it was about a five. We still have a lot of room for improvement on the defensive end. Offensively both teams were scoring pretty well; the shots were coming too easy, though. If we want to be a defensive-minded team, we need to make the shots a little bit tougher and not give them uncontested shots and open layups. We have to buy into the concept that winning does come from defense. The coaching staff is trying to instill that within us.”
Raef LaFrentz, who still needs to work on avoiding foul trouble, agrees with that assessment: “We didn’t handle a lot of defensive situations today like we have been working on them in practice. We’re somewhat disappointed in the way the scrimmage went, but it’s just a scrimmage and we were sluggish. We just need to continue to work hard in practice this week.”
The “team leader’’ thing, such a tantalizing issue for fans and media, hasn’t changed a bit. Dirk Nowitzki (14 points, but just 4-for-20 shooting) continues to mature, so he will naturally become more take-charge, but he’s still Dirk. Fin is still Fin. Avery Johnson, as always steps to the fore as a team spokesman. Maybe only Steve Nash is ready for a true coming-out party; he handled the pregame introductions on the same Sunday that his attempt at rapping hit mainstream national TV. Nash plays a very brief role in a video-game commercial seen all day during NFL broadcasts.
And then Nash played well, one of just a handful of Mavs not wearing the “unacceptable’’ tag today.
Good things some of these guys didn’t look so good, inasmuch as Peter’s in need of next week’s column. He can get ‘em shipped out of here any day now! With those four guys he’s already traded gone, maybe the Mavs will start following next week’s Vecsey column, which we hear will detail the club’s plan to also trade Dirk, Nash, Popeye, Bradley, Griff, Najera and Bell, thus putting a lot of pressure on Adam Harrington and Kipp Christianson, I guess, to run this team. ... Oh, wait. Kipp just got cut. Maybe Peter meant to say the Mavs were moving him, and just got his signals crossed.

Vecesy told me that we are sending Mike and NVE to NY for travis Knight and John Starks. When I informed him Straks no longer played for NY, he called me a liar.
