Congrats Kidd, NBA 4th All-Time Assists Leader
Quote:
Move over, Big O
Eddie Sefko E-mail News tips
Jason Kidd just dished out his third assist of the night less than five minutes into first quarter.
That moved Kidd into fourth place on the NBA's all-time assist list, passing Oscar Robertson, who finished his career with 9,887 helpers.
At his current rate of 8.3 assists per game, Kidd would pass Magic Johnson (10,141) for third place before the season ends. Mark Jackson and John Stockton remain out of reash -- for now.
|
1. John Stockton - 15,806
2. Mark Jackson - 10,334
3. Earvin Magic Johnson - 10,141
4. Jason Kidd - 9,895
246 away from Magic...439 from Mark Jackson...
At this rate, it'll be about 29 more games to hit Magic's record and 53 games to break Jackson's.
What an amazing feat, and a great honor to see one of our own Mavs accomplish it.
We're witnessing history boys and girls...30 years from now I'm going to be watching some new guy in the NBA and say to my kid, "Son...Kids these days just don't pass the ball around like Jason Kidd did back in my day..."

I think passing Magic is pretty obtainable this year. I think it'll be slightly tougher to get past Mark in that short of a period...definitely next year though!
Stockton was just a beast, that's a wide margin between #1 and #2.

That Stockton number is staggering. He'd need a hip replacement and help from Barry Bonds trainer to make it to that mark.
Still...an outstanding accomplishment.

At least when Kidd ends up being second all-time when it's all said and done, it's not going to be Mark Jackson.
I mean Mark Jackson was a good point guard, but Stockton... Mark Jackson???... Magic... Kidd...

John Stockton is the Jerry Rice of basketball.
And way to go, Kidd. I really wish he had compiled all those assists as a MAVERICK but go, boy, go!

If Jason Kidd is serious about playing until he is 40, then he has a realistic shot at catching John Stockton.

Do you think so? Kidd is still around 6,000 assists behind Stockton. He will probably amass something like 650-700 assists this season. Until he's 40 (turning 36 in March), he has four more seasons to go (+ the rest of this one). Even he would score each time 700, that would make "only" 13,200 assists, still 2,600 behind Stockton. Stockton was a real beast. The only one who might have reached him was Magic if he hasn't been tested positive for HIV which caused him to end his career immediately in 1991 (I don't count that small tenure in 1996).

Kidd will never beat Stockton's record, but he still has a chance to do something that Stockton never did - win a Championship...

Of course, Magic was still good during his small comeback, but I just meant that his great days were between 1979-91. If he hasn't been tested positive, I'm sure he would have had a good chance to beat Stockton's record. Well, that implies to set the record, because Stockton entered the league a couple of years after Magic.

It will be awesome to have a Mav that's 2nd all time in such an important statistical category.

Assuming he's still a Mav if/when that happens...

Congrats to Kidd, great basketball player.
Is it me or does Stockton have an eerily similar face to Nash in that picture?

What would've happened if defenders weren't so afraid of dying at the hands of Magic's sweat rubbing off on their own skin.

I just wish he got most of those assists as a Mav! If he did, he could have got his own bronze statue thing outside AAC when he retires just like Stockton has.

He's been an assist man as of late, maybe he's going for Stockton's record afterall?

If you include his All-Star total, then he only needs 7 dimes tonight to hit the big 10K.
Officially though, he's 75 away from that mark...what a stud.

Yep, if only Nellie was hired about 1 month earlier then he was, Kidd probably would still be a Mav.
