The Swine Flu
So, what in the hell is up with this? Is it really worse than the regular flu that can kill hundreds of thousands in any given year? I see that the UIL just postponed all sporting events until the 11th. Fort Worth ISD is closed until the 8th.. So, what's the big deal about the swine flu?
The medical people that I've spoken with are just as confused about as I am. They don't seem to understand why everyone is reacting in such a manner...

They're just taking every precaution possible. Really kind of overreacting. I read that Egypt is slaughtering all their pigs there. Which is really stupid because it started with pork in Mexico and now it's transmitting from human to human. What good is killing pigs in Egypt going to do? I guess it's good that everyone is overreacting instead of just ignoring it. There was the first death in U.S. today it was a 23 month old here in Texas. It does have the potential to be a huge pandemic.

That reminds me.. I wrote a paper several years back about the possible ramifications of a serious flu outbreak... I can't believe I forgot all about that. It must not have been that good.

Yes, but that toddler that died was FROM Mexico, it wasn't an American child. Not one American has died from SF yet...in fact the cases have been rather benign.

Well, let's hope it's a big overreaction.
I'm all for parents having their kids at home to hug goodnight.. I suppose I'm all for "airing" on the side of caution.

Probably just a propaganda movement towards nationalized healthcare. I haven't heard enough to indicate it's really anything different than the normal flu. But the fact that it's from dirty, old Mexico is enough to give some people the heebie-jeebies.

1st case is confirmed in my hometown Hamburg. A woman is being isolated at the University hospital. Mavs better beat the Nuggets in 4 or 5 ...

I wish Aledo would close tomorrow so that I wouldn't have to sub in a 5th grade classroom. I subbed last week in kindergarten and those snotty kids got me sick and then I passed it on to my 7 month old baby boy. At least it wasn't the swine flu!
And I understand that the virus is very contagious and that none of us are protected since this flu cannot be affected by the flu vaccine, but I think some of the precautions taken are just a tad bit extreme!
People said that America would elect a black president when pigs fly. We are now 100 days in to Obama's presidency and swine flu. (Sorry - my husband got that in a text tonight and I couldn't resist! Hope it doesn't offend anyone!)

I recently read an article that the same thing happened in 1976. I think about 200 people got the disease and one person died. Heck, more people died from getting inoculated than the disease itself that year. So yeah, i think we're overreacting a bit.

I work at a hospital, and we have no idea why the panic has set in. It definitely has though.

Why don't we keep schools closed during the regular flu season? That kills tens of thousands of Americans every year.

Wash your hands, don't touch your face - preventing the flu is almost as easy as preventing leprosy (which simply requires wiping your ass after you crap...)

I certainly know for a fact that i am in way qualified to judge the appropriate response to this disease.
I also know that by the time it is obvious to the joe-blow on the street (such as myself) that something drastic needs to be done it will be waaaaay too late.
And finally, I ALSO know that if a big drastic, intrusive, program actually succeeds in limiting the spread of this disease (ie is a success) then people will gripe about about the over-reaction <<<"see, nothing happened... we did all that crap for NOTHING... sheesh....">>
like i said, I am in no position to judge the appropriate response... so I will defer to the CDC etc... and hope that the people that DO have training and information relevant to this aren't doing a crappy job. <fingers crossed>

this is a true damned if you do, damned if you don't.
if the flu doesn't sweep over the world's population, the health professionals at the cdc and dhs look like they overreacted on a mammoth scale.
if however this strain of the flu does sweep over the world's population, causing at the least illness for many and at the worst deaths by the thousands, and the health professionals didn't act such as they have, they look like incompetant idiots for not recognizing the problem and acting speedily.
sure it looks like a huge overreaction. shutting down fwisd? well, the kids sure appreciate it. calling off uil competition? craziness!
erring on the side of caution.
those who look back at 1976 as an example of overreaction are as incorrect in the analogy as those who attempt to use the 1918 pandemic as an example of why we should act.
one thing is for certain: the influenza virus is as bizarre as it comes. it mutates every year, and goes thru a major mutation on an apparently 10 year cycle. one mean mofo, that's for sure....
and btw ron paul is an elitist sob.

The two things are totally different... However had Saddam had WMD's and we did nothing but they were used on American interests do you think people would have thought Bush was good for doing nothing?
Like mavdog said, damned if you do... damned if you don't.

OHMIGOSH! I get closing the schools...kind of. If it saves one child's life then that's fantastic. Children and the eldery are the ones who tend to have complications as a result of viruses like this. So great. Let's protect the kids. I think some of the measures taken are too drastic, but again, if a child is saved then great! BUT, things have gone too far. I took the year off from teaching to stay home with my baby. Unfortunately, he is one expensive son-of-a-gun, so I must return to teaching this fall. With the economy as it is, there are an awful lot of people out there trying to get only a handful of openings. Monday was going to be a big day for me. It held so much promise! A job fair was going to be held at the Arlington Convention Center, and representatives from approximately 60 school districts were going to be there. Instead of attending 10 different job fairs, I was only going to have to go to one. Fantastic! After subbing a group of crazy 5th graders today, I hopped in my car to pick up the kid. At a red light, I decided to check my email on my Blackberry. And THIS is what I find:
Quote:
In response to state and county health service warnings and to error onthe side of caution the NCTASPA Job Fair scheduled for Monday May 4, 2009 has been canceled and will not be rescheduled for this year
|
SERIOUSLY?!?! The world has gone mad. I just don't get it.
/rant off
(if you made it this far, I apologize for the wordiness. I just had to get that off my chest. I feel a bit better now.)
