17 points, 17 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks in 41 minutes
That's the production for Damp, Diop, and Mbenga at the center spot tonight...That's not even including the minutes in which KVH played at the center spot...

I'll take that every night and be damn glad about it.
The biggest difference in this team and teams past is the great center play.

AJs benching of Damp, may have turned out to be the most brilliant coaching move in the history of our Mavs. Benching Damp allows him to come into games later without picking up silly ticky tack fouls and also allows him to be more aggressive.
I really love this move. I love this team. AJ, wow. What more can you say?

AE, I was thinking the same thing. It was a masterstroke of unimaginable genius. In fact, it may the move that defines this season.

And I think you have to give a lot of credit to Damp as well. That guy has had his attitude, his desire and his professionalism questioned so much in the press...he's proved himself to be of much higher quality than the Sefko's of the world gave him credit for.

Great points by all...
Avery Johnson bringing Dampier off the bench has been the chaning point of this season. Kudos to Avery for being willing to swallow his pride enough to do it, then be able to sell the idea to Damp. But Dampier coming off the bench has been the best thing for the team. It magnifies his strengths and lets him do his thing without the burden of early foul trouble or lack of aggression.
On the other hand, I think Damp deserves a big slap on the back too. He swallowed his pride to come off the bench, and he's been a beast. There's no question in my mind that he's still the best center on the team. I was afraid that he might check out emotionally on the team, but he's been a real professional about this, and he's a huge reason why this team is rolling right now.

In this weeks Sporting News there was a blurb commenting that the Mavs might have the best center combination in the league.
Never thought I wuold ever read anything like that.

I wonder what our total center avg. production is for this season.

Damps is just a complete and utter MAN out there lately. He gets his hands on every tough rebound it seems. He's been hustling for loose balls, making great outlets.
You can tell the rest of the team has a much greater appreciation of his efforts as well.
I've always thought that big men have a special bond on the basketball court that the perimeter guys just can't join. It's a damn tough mans world in the paint on defense and especially rebounding. The two-headed center is really getting the job done.

great thought murph.
I wonder how the Mavs center stats over the past month stack up against those teams with the premire centers in the leage?

Think about how well rested our centers will be come playoff due to shared mins.
Is anyone else impressed with the way DJ comes in and immediately makes his mark (shot, block, etc.). I hope we find a way to keep him around as well.

It might be more interesting to compare our center combo with the squirts and the pistons. hint, hint.

well I was wondering which team gets the most on a nightly basis from the 5....but what you suggested would be interesting as well.

W.O.W. (when I read your comment, I immediately heard Corby's voice saying, "mark")
this run has been such fun to watch and even more fun has been seeing the Mavs FINALLY get productivity from the 5. back in that 02-03 season during the 14 game win streak, it was fun to watch, but I never felt comfortable with leads knowing that it was up to Bradley (shudder) and my boy Raef to defend the paint. that team had chemistry, but this team now has what seems to be explosive chemistry. they are a true joy to watch!

Shawn Bradley defended the paint like no Maverick ever has, or quite possibly, ever will.
This sharp-elbowed, sharp-tempered behemoth, the 10th leading shot-blocker in NBA history, used every ounce of heart, muscle, guile, and desire that he had stored up in that immense 7-6 body of his, to fight and claw and swat the sh*t out of any foeman low, sundry, or fool enough to challenge the mobile, misunderstood monster in his own domain in the paint. Big #44 amassed 2119 career swats- including 1250 in Mavs blue- on his way to becoming a true Legend of both the Mavericks, and in the annals of NBA shot-blocking history.
Raef was also pretty good when he tried to do his weak-side shot-blocking thing, but unfortunately the Kansas Alum's never-ending injury problems, and the dire ire that both he and Mr. Bradley suffered from the Big Don, both helped to prevent Shawn's young, perimeter-oriented understudy from ever really having a chance to grow into a demonstrably good post defender during his time in Dallas...

I think it's pretty hard to put defensive lapses on our inside guys. It was a team thing, it's one of the reasons I used to get so pissed off about people ragging both raef and shawn.
If the mavs played the same sort of defense now as they did during those years, diop and dampier would foul out every game by the third quarter.
Nelson and defense were just never in the same vocabulary, cubes griped about it for years but until AJ never did much about it. I think he figured he would have to fire nelson and he didn't know who to hire anyway.

Before blaming Bradley, blame the swinging gate that was Nash or any other Mavs guard. The perimeter defense when Bradley patroled the paint was atrocious.
