Now that Indiana has just acquired T.J. Warren from the Suns, Bojan Bogdanovic might be more available.

And as far a big man, I don't think you can isolate our needs by position. You need someone who can space the floor, rebound, and defend power forwards. That could be a mobile center or a rebounding power forward.

@JShawNBA: The Dallas Mavericks have reached a summer league commitment with guard Wael Arakji, a promising young star from Lebanon who recently impressed at a free agent mini-camp with the team, league source told @HoopsRumors.

I’ll start to believe we’ll sign a max marquee free agent when we do it literally for the first time ever

Apparently Wael Arakji has been a minor legend in Asia basketball since 2012. He's flirted with the NBA draft several times. He even played a month in China alongside Stephon Marbury. He's 24, but he's been well known since he was 17.

7-year pro, only 24 years old... So basically another Luka, in a very broad sense.

Looks like he entered the NBA draft in 2016, but didn't get drafted. I have no idea what he can be in this league, but leave it up to Donnie & Co. to dig up these unknown prospects to see if they can be a diamond in the rough.

While watching his videos, I thought yeah that’s nice, but he’s not getting that off vs nba talent. Then I realized that he’s 6’4”, so yeah maybe.

I've seen a few of you register interest in him, so I'll post it in this thread...

@JandersonSacBee: Kings center Willie Cauley-Stein wants out of Sacramento. Cauley-Stein's agent tells me Willie would prefer to become an unrestricted free agent so he can pursue other opportunities.

There's a reason he didn't get minutes in Sacramento. I'm not entirely sure what it is, but I get the distinct impression the coaches and front office were not fond of the guy. It sounds like they practically booted him out, and his agent seemed to be giving them the finger on the way out.

Red flags are everywhere and no one is hiding it very well.

If we can’t get any of the big names... I would be okay with Brogdon and WCS. WCS seems to have all the tools... I am not sure what’s been going on is Sac but keep in mind they have been dysfunctional for a while and that can impact young players development.

No matter what happens in FA, people are going to be disappointed here

Really we just spent 80% of our assets on a guy who hasn’t played yet. We’re going to spend our cap trying to build around him and Doncic. No move will look good until we field a healthy team next season.

My bet is we look for 2+ mid level guys and only put out feelers on guys like Kemba

Mavs 4th in 3pt attempts (only Hawks, Bucks, and Rockets shot more last season)
Mavs 27th in 3pt% (only Knicks, Lakers, and Suns shot worse)

It's clear that Rick wants the three to be an important part of the team's strategy, but we simply didn't have the personnel for it. It's also obvious that surrounding Luka with guys who can shoot will only help spread the floor and make life easier for Doncic to work his magic while potentially leading to more wins.

Guys we've added this offseason or during last season
39.5% - Porzingis in his last season
37.7% - Jackson
42.5% - Arakji last season
38.5% - Reaves when only counting threes from NBA range last season
33.3% - Roby (40% in his sophomore year)

Other than KP, who has shown dominance, I'm going to assume all of those other guys are Rigadeaus until proven otherwise, but it's still nice that the Mavs are looking to hit it big with lots of small wagers on the right guys.

Potential FA targets with 3pt%

GUARDS
Kemba Walker (35.6%) - Second-tier star who may get max money. Not particularly efficient, but he was doing it all in Charlotte. Small dude who hustles, but as he ages in the 4th year of his contract, may be a defensive liability at 6'1" and 34 years old.

DeAngelo Russell (36.9%) - Really sneaky and hardworking dude. Lots of teams will be looking at him as well, but if Nets go hard on Kyrie, then he may be available. Allstar last year.

Malcolm Brogdon (42.6%) - Best bench guys in the league. It will take starting money (and maybe even star money) to get him here and may still opt to go back to the Bucks to try the ECF again. High energy and higher character guy. I think he's going to cost too much and will choose to be loyal anyway so not worth it unless he shows interest.

Patrick Beverly (39.7%) - Slightly older, slightly smaller, but all hustle. Great Stevenson-type. Gets in players' heads. Never backs down. 3/D guard that would excel next to Doncic who will be primary ballhandler. Biggest issue is cost.

Danny Green (45.5%) - a crazy-efficient sharpshooter. UFA for Raptors who is probably returning, but would be a great get at the right price.

JJ Reddick (40%) - older at 34. Not a defensive black hole anymore, but also not a star.

Terrence Ross (38.3%) - More of a 6th man, but not a bad sparkplug who can shoot at 6'7". Not terribly mature or well-coached, but he's got a great frame and shot.

Jeremy Lamb (34.8%) - Not particularly efficient next to Kemba.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (34.7%) - not particularly efficient and already 26 so no longer a promising young prospect. His frame certainly makes him worth a look for a very cheap price.

Rodney Hood (34.5%) - Dude is going to get paid after he put up 51%/42%/80% against the Warriors. His overall playoff and regular season averages were low, but the potential is there.

Seth Curry (45%) - Liked him when he was here. Wouldn't mind having him back. Depends on cost and if he'd come back.

Terry Rozier (35.3%) - Smaller guy, but decent defense and decent shooting. Not a natural primary playmaker, which isn't a problem next to Doncic.

FORWARDS - We have KP starting at PF, but on minutes restrictions. Jackson has shown promise. Doncic has that Forward-size so we may want smaller players, but still need rebounding from somewhere. PF-C tweeners could be our best bet.

Bojan Bogdanovic (42.5%) - Sharpshooter. Decent defense. UFA. Worth a look.

Julius Randle (34.4%) - bruiser with mobility. Could fit well next to KP with rebounding and mobility (fast, bruiser forwards killed us and he could be on them while KP defends the bigger guy). Defense could be a problem and still developing as a 3pt shooter

Jimmy Butler (34.7%) - defensive guy who rises to the competition. Demands a lot of touches and plays the same parts of the floor as Doncic.

Tobias Harris (39.7%) - Either Jimmy goes or HArris does. 6ers unlikely to pay for both. Harris would likely be our only FA, though and I'm not sure that gets us over the hump. Still, he's 27 and a very nice, well-rounded player who can spread the floor for KP and Doncic.

Nikola Mirotic (36.5%) - Decent option, but may be to slow to pair with KP.

Thaddeus Young (34.9%) - Older player in his 30s. Not worth a hugely long or large contract, but might be worth a look.

Marcus Morris (37.5%) - Decent option who can shoot, rebound, and defend well enough at 29.

Bobby Portis (39.3%) - Restricted FA. Wizards will either do everything they can to match to keep SOME talent or they may balk at spending a single dollar on that sinking roster with Wall making 41million in a suit. Could be another Chandler Parsons situation where we could steal a restricted guy away (without the terrible aftermath of Parsons)

Al-Farouq Aminu (34.3%) - Decent shooter and defender/rebounder. For the right price, I'd take him back.

Taj Gibson (32.4%) - Not good enough at % or volume to really represent here.

CENTERS - Right now it's just Powell (and potentially Mejri). We don't absolutely need 3pters from center, but it would be a luxury

Vujecic (36.4%) - likely to return to Magic. Will cost most if not all of our $. Monster rebounder, decent shooter, offense for miles. Underrated passer. Might be too slow to field next to KP and Doncic.

Cousins (27.4%) - Not particlarly impressive and injury-prone. May be had for cheap?

Al Horford (36.0%) - Probably a perfect fit next to KP. Rebounds well. 6'10" with good mobility, defense, and adequate rebounding. Can keep teams honest with his shooting. PRobably really expensive.

Jonas Valanciunas (29.2%) - Big boi who may be too slow next to KP and Doncic. STill, averaged 25.2pts and 13.8reb per 36. Not a great 3pt shooter, but we have KP.

Willie Caulie-Stein (N/A) - Brandan Wright or Dwight Powell-type. No jump shot, but lots of lobs. Decent stats, but a malcontent and may only have hustled in contract year. I'd stay clear, but for the right price, maybe.

Enes Kanter (29.4%) - likable rental. Defense an issue. but stepped up in playoffs.

Thomas Bryant (33.3%) - Weak 3pt shooting. Decent rebounding

Ed Davis (N/A) - hustle rebounder who can play 20-25mpg and put up ridiculous rebounding numbers. No 3s made, but could be the best rebounding player in the league.

DeWayne Dedmon (38.2%) - Unicorn light. Can rebound, defend, and hit a three. Not sure if Atlanta would let him go, but could be really valuable for 10-15mill (About half our cap space).

You are forgetting the best shooter of all FAs e.g. Bogdanovic
The spurs are on him and I have to say they are quite good at spotting their FA targets.

Bogdanovic + Dedmon (whos pretty decent at shooting 3s) would definitely make us one of the best 3pt shooting team.

Nice list.

I think you could get Marcus Morris with a reasonable contract, and then maybe overpay in a competitive Beverley market... or possibly Brogdon. However, I doubt we get either of the last two. Bogdanovic would then be my next choice.

If none of them are available, then Green, Reddick, and Ross all bring something slightly different to the table. I like the maturity of Green and Reddick, but both are now limited to perimeter shooting. Ross doesn't have the maturity, but there's more versatility in his game I think.

I should mention that Dedmon would be a great addition, but there are a lot of shoppers out there for his skill. Teams like Boston are now competitors in the marketplace since they now have more money. I think teams are going to really have to overpay to get their preferred player.

@All_Things_Mavs: Dallas has signed Stephen Thompson Jr. out of Oregon State to a Summer League deal.

Thompson played four years at OSU and finished as the school’s all-time leading 3-point shooter.

@All_Things_Mavs: Finn Delany will join the Mavericks’ Summer League squad.

Delany is 23 years old and played in New Zealand last year. He went undrafted in 2016 after attending Southwest Baptist.

That’s Stevie Thompson’s son, one of my all-time favorite players! He played for Syracuse in the 80’s. One of the most athletic players I’ve ever seen 44inch vertical, a lot like David Thompson only zero jump shot. Literally could only dunk but a great defender too. Ironic that his son is a 3pt ace. Hope he sticks!

KP is ready to go and look who straight liked it: Frank

It would be too funny if we trade for him. Give the Knicks the two 2nd we got in trading down

I just don't understand how people haven't gotten the memo that Frank is a terrible basketball player. The only thing the kid has had going for him since he was drafted was the potential for a high ceiling. That has all but collapsed.

Well, he’s been in one of the worst basketball situations imaginable with terrible talent around him. He’s not even 22. I doubt he’ll be an all star ever, but to write him off completely is hot take garbage.

Always strange when the argument is flipped from “dude has shown zero skill” to “well you can’t prove he’s terrible despite no evidence to the contrary”

The issue I have with Frank is not his risk/reward ratio. Grabbing him for Utah's 2020 or Portland's 2021, heck even both, would be great. Given that we wanted to draft Roby anyway, it would essentially give us Frank for free.

Front office however doesn't seem to be willing to get into any projects right now. Otherwise we could have taken Bol Bol (or similar). We're very much in win-asap mode and want players that can contribute right away. Frank simply doesn't fit that too well. I guess he would just occupy a roster spot and for that even a crap 2nd rounder is too much.

Also, we need shooters on the wing more than anything.

I agree with the post above but I also think we don’t want him to lose any of our current space. But I bet once our FA stuff falls into place we would gladly pick him up. If we could develop him into a Thabo Sefalosha we would be good and he would have a spot in this team.

Yeah, the fact that Frank is owed $11m over the next two seasons due to being the #8 overall pick is why we’re not interested. If he gets waived and we can pick him up for minimum, then I think we’d be all over it — but we’re certainly not eating up that much cap space on a project while we’re chasing stars.

the 20-21 season is allready a team option. So there is no risk to try to trade for him after we are done with our FA this summer.

Yeah, they wont trade for him before that not to hurt their cap space but after it im sure they would pull the trigger if there is the opportunity.

I also dont think the Knicks are going to waive him this season. They will keep him for trades/salaries

This shit needs to die — we’re not landing 2 max FAs because nobody is taking THJ and Lee off our hands unless we include some good picks in the deal... And if you’re trading away good picks to land a 33 year old big when your star players are 20 and 23, then you’re doing it wrong.

Not only that, but we'd likely have to stretch waive THJ in which Cuban swallows 40 million. Not gonna happen.

I will say that I'm growing more used to Horford though if we strike out on others and can get his price down a bit. You could do worse I suppose. Rather just pay Vuc in that scenario though.

Horford is much better than vuc. 4/96 or below and I'm all for horford anything more than that and I'm out(and it's looking like more than that) we aren't the lakers. While I'm a believer that there is value in trying to be good immediately our stars are 20 and 23 instead of 35. It makes sense for la to mortgage the future, their window is 3 years. Our window should be at least a decade.

I am sure we can find some help with THJ and Lee although I admit it will be VERY hard.

BUT again I am trying to understand his notion that we shouldn't sign guys like Al and Walker ( not my first choice but a good choice) because of how old Luka and KP are. Are we supposed to wait for the to be 28 to build a winning team??

Luka and KP have the talent and have shown what they can do with BAD teams. You add unselfish and talented veteran players and this team takes a HUGE leap towards contending NOW.

WHY NOT??

If we do that and it doesn't get us a title in 3 years, we bring in the next wave of talent to surround Luka and KP when they will be 23 AND 26.

The Mavs have set themselves to have multiple attempts at this with multiple surrounding players. In theory we could field 3 star studded teams and Luka will still only be 29. SO WHY WAIT?

Kemba
?
Luka
KP
Al

...will be one of the best starting 4-5 in the league and with everything going on could contend this year and over the next 2-3.
