Default Carter to Spurs Heating Up

Quote:
The rumors of a trade between the Spurs and Nets involving guard Vince Carter appeared to heat up on Friday night.

If New Jersey trades Carter, San Antonio is considered the front-runner to land the former All-Star.

The most recent proposal has the Spurs sending Roger Mason, George Hill, Fabricio Oberto and Bruce Bowen to New Jersey for Carter.

The Nets would immediately waive Oberto and Bowen to get themselves under the 15-man roster limit.

UPDATE: One problem with the deal proposed here. Under NBA rules, it would be illegal. In order for a team to take four players for one, it must make room on the 15-man roster BEFORE the deal is consummated. It doesn't matter if the plan is to waive a couple of the incoming players after the deal is done.

In order for the Spurs and Nets to make this deal, the Nets -- who are already at the 15-man limit -- would have to waive three of their own players first. Obviously, that's not going to happen. Doesn't neccesarily mean there is no deal for Carter in the works, but it isn't this deal.

Won't happen. Vince is a good player, but he's not what the Spurs need. The Spurs need a defensive minded big man, not a scorer.

IMO the Spurs know that the mavs and rockets are interested in Vince too and they're just trying to drive the price up.

They're just driving his price up in reaction to the rumor that we might be acquiring him...

that'd be ok (the trade above). We could then trade for Bruce Bowen, and he could stick his foot under Vince on a jumpshot.

My gut feeling is N.J. is bluffing by flirting with these other teams...namely S.A.

We probably have the best offer on the table.

Several Teams Want Carter; Mavs, Spurs Not Among Them

Feb 15, 2009 3:58 PM EST

A person familiar with the Nets told Ken Berger of CBS Sports that several teams are interested in Vince Carter, but Dallas and San Antonio are not among them.

New Jersey has had conversations with about six teams, but only serious talks one club.

On Friday night it was reported that the Spurs were the leading contender to land Carter, with the Mavericks interested as well.

It doesn't make sense for SA to blow up half its team to get Carter. He doesn't put them over the top. Maybe for Rasheed Wallace or the like but not another scorer who doesn't play defense.
