First serious proposal I've seen here. Looks semi-reasonable, Calderon and Varejao are being shopped and a defensive-minded C fits Dirk a lot better in my eyes. Toronto gets talent (though more quantity than quality) in return and Cavs cap relief.

Still think any conversation with Canada starts with Bargnani and I'm also not really convinced if I'm Cleveland. Carter is looking good with the Mavs, but not sure he likes a role as a mentor around a young lottery team. And they probably want some youth and upside to replace Varejao.

So, why is Cleveland looking to offload an in-his-prime top 10 center that is under a good contract for the next two years for cap relief?

This. Cleveland gets two expiring vets that really don't help them at all. Cleveland isn't fooling themselves into thinking that they will be good this year-- it's about next year and the year after and Varejao will be there for that. Kaman won't. Plus, contracts can easily turn a valuable trade piece into an untradable one or vice versa. Varejao's contract makes him infinitely more valuable because he isn't overpaid for his 14pt/14reb season.
