I am officialy tired from all the drama here the last few days..so what are some good movies out? I wanna see one tonight but don't really know what's out and worth seeing. Last flick I saw was My Big Fat Greek Wedding and it was freakin awesome. Barbershop looks good and I know Ecks vs. Sever is coming out. Anything else?

Swimfan is actually pretty good. Seems like ateenie bopper movie, but is a decent movie. Some of it is perdictable, but what isn't nowadays?

My gf actually kinda wanted to see it I think, since there really haven't been any silly suspense flicks out lately.

Late summer early fall, and Feb/March are generally a wasteland for movies. There is almost nothing I want to see coming out any time soon.

The only movie I have any interest in is Red Dragon. I am a bit skeptical after Hannibal though. Regardless Ed Norton is in it so it can be that bad right?

big movie buff here. i just love movies and would love to direct one one day. however, does anyone else think that the quality of hollywood movies these days have just gone through the cellar. i don't know if my standards have become higher or if i've become desensitized to many of the special effects and violence that goes on these days. i mean, back in the 80s, they were bunch of movies made with simple dumb plots, but they were fun to watch (back to the future, big, joe versus the volcano, bloodsport, dirty dancing, etc.). Nowadays, the dumb movies are just dumb.

but anyways, to answer you question, dj, there aren't too many good movies out in theaters right now. instead of hollywood, i would suggest everyone start turning more towards indie flicks or international films. if you haven't really tried indie flicks or international films, you guys are truly missing out. many international countries have revolutionalized their film industry in the last decade and are producing quality films that are better than most hollywood flicks IMO.

here are a couple suggestions:

Y Tu Mama Tambien: I was cracking up throughout the whole movie, but yet the movie is more than just a comedy, but a commentary on the political situation in Mexico. GREAT GREAT movie! this is a bit more mainstream, however. if anyone's uncomfortable with nudity, this is not your cup of tea. actually, i suggest you guys stay away from most international movies all together as Europe is very liberal about nudity in movies and asia is getting there as well.

Battle Royale: I just saw this movie the other day. It's from Japan. You guys won't believe the plot. It's about the future in Japan where students have become very unruly and disobedient towards adults. Therefore, the adults have decided to implement a program where every year, one high school class is sent to an island where everyone is expected to kill each other until there is one survivor, who will be allowed back into society. Seemed like a b-movie at first, but it was so surreal and had my attention the whole time. You won't find this movie at blockbuster's. Go to Premiere Video Store on Mockingbird and Central, the best movie store in all of dallas IMO. Screw blockbuster's. Premiere has about every movie you can find, outdated ones, international ones, and if there's any movie you want to see that's not there, ask the owner and he'll order it for you.

Attacking the Gas Station: This is a movie from Korea about four guys who decide to rob a gas station, because they're bored. It's got the atmosphere of a movie like "Go" and there are so many surprising scenes that you just have to see it to believe it. It's more of a social commentary on how the hierarchical Confucian system in Korea has impeded the country's growth. I think Asians might enjoy this more than non-Asians IMO.

Don't want to describe every movie, but here are some other great movies i've seen lately (i included some mainstream ones).

Amelie, Mulholland Drive, Friend (Korea), Late Marriage (Spain or Mexico), Waking Life (One of my favorites), Say Anything (a very unique 80s flick and has John Cusack, one of my all-time favorite actors along with Johnny Depp), Ghost World, and Sam I Am (with Sean Penn. a manipulated tear-jerker, but still, i did let out a manly cry for some reason. i have a soft spot for parent-child relationship movies).

favorite movies of all time

dead poets society
life is beautiful
schindler's list
mulholland drive
with honors
thomas crown affair
boogie nights
y tu mama tambien
waking life
shawshank redemption (must be the only movie to make everyone's top 10 lists for some reason).
bloodsport
amelie

damn . . . i think i just went off on a tangent here, but i can just go on and on about movies . . .

Veruca.. in my best English equivalent

Y Tu Mama Tambien = E Two Momma Tom-Be-N

DJ -- I hear ya... it was the same way when I saw Next Friday on opening night.. I saw Barbershop on the day after opening night -- both times the theater was really crowded.. on one hand, it was kinda a fun experience, but on the other hand, a little tough to hear the movie when someone would say something really funny. The laughter always took longer than usual to die down.

Its better to see movies in the morning or early afternoons this way you avoid the teenyboppers and the loud people.

Anyway Barbershop was great saw it last Saturday then went again with a couple friends who wanted to see it.

F*** Jesse Jackson!

LOL.

Couple suggestions:

1) "Can I have tickets for 'And your momma also'"
2) "Can I have tickets for the Mexican porn flick"
3) Bring a friend, tell him/her to buy a ticket first, and then just say "Same thing
as him/her."

Good luck, V!

How about Cannibal Holocaust.

Sorry, I think it's only playing at Alamo Draft House in Austin... www.drafthouse.com

Awesome place, you can order beer and food from your seat. It's my personal favorite "getaway from life" place.

Anyway, I agree it's not prime movie season. Maybe just a night of wild drinking will do the trick, dj.

FFM - Cedric MAKES the movie.

And that's probably why Al and Jesse are trying to boycott it. I'm just a white boy from the country so maybe I'm not totally in the place to say exactly why but if I had my guess, it's because Cedric's character has a very "pragmatic" view of Jesse, MLK, and Rosa Parks, among other things. Also there was a short convo about reparations but I doubt that got anybody's panties in a wad.

There wasn't really anything truly wrong with the stuff he said. He did say "F Jesse Jackson," which I'm sure a lot of people didn't like, but some probably did!

It's true you guys...you have a little keypad on the arm of your chair and you just push the "beer" button, then the number that corresponds to the kind of beer you want, etc. and a waiter brings you your order. It's awesome! I try to go once a week.

If anyone is in Austin, PM me and you can meet us there. You will love it!
