Ray Lewis was never a financial option for the Cowboys with the NFL's hard cap rules (unless we traded someone like Marion Barber for him..)

Brooking is going to be as good, or better than, Zach Thomas.

It's breaking news on ESPN right now.

Wow. I didn't think Jerry would do it.

Why do I have the feeling that whatever team he joins the cowboys will end up playing next year and get burned by him?

Well I guess Jerry has taken away any excuse Garret has to become a more running oriented offense. It does seem to leave us a little thin in the passing game, but after seeing how many balls were forced to TO's side to keep him happy last season, I can't say I'm particularly upset about this.

He'll burn that team eventually...it won't bother me ONE bit.

I know it had been talked about off and on but this kind of still seems random in the timing aspect.

I wonder if they'll try to find a WR.

All in all, he was pretty iffy against the Eagles so I'm not terrified of this possibility. Could happen though.

Yeah, but you also can't forget players like Witten and Bennett, who are going to get their fair share of receiving yards. Furthermore, our running backs seem pretty decent catching the ball out of the backfield so they'll get a chunk of yardage as well. I do think we should be switching to more of a run-based offense though. Hopefully.

I wouldn't be opposed to adding a guy like Harrison, but considering he's old and seems to lost a step, it needs to be at the right price.

Great timing cutting TO. Right after the Seahawks just signed Houzmanzadah. What a joke. I honestly don't think the Cowboys even know what they're doing. Then we take the cap hit on TO. Should make it even easier for us to sign someone to replace him.........

That should make the point of how bad it was with TO and they're saying it doesn't matter the hit or the potential backlash for this year...we can't afford to have him on this roster and kill/divide the roster even more.

Harrison would be interesting, but does he have ANYTHING at all left in the tank? They were just spitballing on ESPN, I imagine, but they could look to see if they could make a deal with Arizona for Boldin.

TO doesn't divide teams when he's with the team. Its when he leaves is when the division occur's. So don't think just cutting TO is gonna fix everything. I guess this is the step in the right direction. All this release is gonna do is divide the TO supporters(and they're there especially on the defense) and the Romo backers. Its going to be interesting to see how Roy Williams does with the Cowboys. Hopefully better than 200 yards.

oh jesus. I don't know what to think. I liked him. He did kinda destroy the Cowboys so..maybe in the long run, this is better for the team. I just hope the next team he is with doesn't burn us somehow....also, i pray to god that the redskins don't sign him. Maybe if they do, it will be good..he can destroy that team too.. But....either way...wow.

marvin harrison ? Yeah...i'll take him...or maybe we can get boldin from the cards...

Looks Like T.O. Gone
Reports Claim Owens Released; Cowboys Mum

link

IRVING, Texas - The Dallas Cowboys released wide receiver Terrell Owens Wednesday night, according to an ESPN report citing two sources, the club apparently ending more than two months of off-season speculation.

As of midnight (CST), though, no team official would confirm the report or offer comment.

Following the disappointing end to the 2008 season a number of team sources told various media outlets the organization was split on the controversial receiver's status. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones downplayed speculation the club was discussing a potential release of Owens. As recently as last weekend Jones was shrugging off direct questions about the reports.

"You and I both know that the one you're asking about all the time, if I gave you the answer that you want to hear, then you would have already had it," Jones said during a Feb. 17 press conference to announce a George Strait concert to open the new Cowboys Stadium on June 6. "So the fact you don't have it ought to tell you something."

As recent as last Thursday Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones would not comment on Owens' status, and parried a question by saying, "I didn't say that anything like that, did I?"

Stephen Jones also disputed accusations he was trying to convince his father, Jerry Jones, to release Owens and that the two were at odds over the decision.

"That's absolutely incorrect," Stephen Jones said. "That's all I'll tell you. That's incorrect. We have our discussions but we never had - we're on the same page, I can assure you of that."

Apparently the team decided Owens' negative impact on the locker room weighed heavier than his three straight 1,000-yard, double-digit touchdown seasons. The outspoken receiver was often at the center of turmoil during his time in Dallas - from his first training camp with the team to the very end. Owens grabbed headlines for wearing a Tour de France-style cycling outfit while rehabbing a camp injury during his lone season with Bill Parcells in 2006, and most recently reports claimed he was irritated by quarterback Tony Romo's relationship with tight end Jason Witten.

Heading into the final year of his initial three-year contract with the team, the Cowboys inked Owens to a four-year, $34 million extension last summer that included a $13 million signing bonus. If the reports are accurate, Owens' accelerated prorated signing bonus will count $9.6 million against the team's salary cap this year, sending the team's total of dead money for this season to nearly $15 million against the $127 million salary cap.

That number would soar close to $20 million if the Cowboys decide to trade or release strong safety Roy Williams, who would count another $4.4 million against the cap.

The Cowboys now have five receivers remaining on the roster. They traded three 2009 draft picks to Detroit for Roy Williams six weeks into last season, and still have five-year veteran Patrick Crayton, as well as two three-year veterans in Miles Austin and Sam Hurd. Isaiah Stanback is heading into his third year with the club.

Why do I get the feeling that Jerry wouldn't cut T.O. without having an ace up his sleeve?

Stay tuned...

TO gone. RW38 still on the team. Ellis still on the team.

What is going on, and what else does Jerry have up his sleeve?

Strange off-season to say the least.

Maybe the economy has some owners selling some high picks that they don't want to pay????

I have to say, unless they have something else in store (and I think that's doubtful) I hate this move.

Not because I'm a big TO lover. I was tired of his act, for sure. But simply doing this is not going to restore order in that locker room. Doing this is not going to restore respect for our lame duck head coach. That locker room is still going to be chaos, only now we'll have significantly less talent on the field on Sundays.

This is Jerry's last ditch effort to make this coaching staff work, and it's not enough, imo.

Although he was a pain, I'm going to miss the hell out of Terrell Owens.

I am so tired of cowboy talk on the radio.

thanks jerry, for the timing. God forbid anyone talk about the Mavericks today.

Maybe the economy has some owners selling some high picks that they don't want to pay????
Looks like I spoke too soon, RW38 sounds like he is gone as well.

Will they get GEllis as well?

I just saw this. Hmmm. I wonder if Holt sees an opening. I would welcome him with open arms.

If I were Jerry I would throw them a draft pick. Just to make sure we get him.

Cowboys To Cut Ties With Safety Williams

link

IRVING, Texas - Not surprisingly, safety Roy Williams' six-year stay in Dallas apparently is over, too.

Less than 12 hours after news broke of the Cowboys' intention to officially release mercurial wide receiver Terrell Owens, the Cowboys have ended weeks of speculation and are planning to release the five-time Pro Bowler and former first-round pick, a move that saves roughly $2 million in salary cap space, according to two sources.

The Cowboys have not yet confirmed either of the releases, and as of yet, those roster moves have not been officially sent into the NFL. Moves become official when the league receives notice by the close of business that day, 3 p.m. CST.

Williams was scheduled to earn $4.4 million in base salary and count $6.6 million against the cap in 2009. He had two years remaining on the five-year, $25.2 million extension he signed in 2006 that included an $11.1 million signing bonus - the largest-ever for an NFL safety at the time.

That also means the Cowboys will be dumping another $4.4 million of dead money into their salary cap, having to account for the acceleration of the final two prorated years on Williams' $11.1 million signing bonus. Adding that to the $9.6 million of dead money accelerating from the three-year extension Owens signed this past summer, and the Cowboys' total of dead money for this 2009 season is now approaching $20 million.

When it became obvious the Cowboys likely would release Williams, his agent Jordan Woy asked the Cowboys to either trade or release his client as soon as possible so they could start combing the league for potential suitors before too much of the free-agency money dries up.

The Cowboys were exploring trades for Williams, but the chances of moving him were slim given the rumors of his impending departure. The club will have a clear hole at strong safety since cornerback Anthony Henry, a presumed candidate to move to free safety next season with Ken Hamlin possibly sliding into Williams' spot, was traded to Detroit last Saturday for backup quarterback Jon Kitna.

Hamlin is expected to start again next season, but Keith Davis, who started nine games in Williams' absence last year, is an unrestricted free agent and scheduled to visit with the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday.

Williams appeared in only three games because of two separate arm fractures, the second injury moving him to injured reserve for the final nine games. Prior to the 2008 season, he had played in 95 of 96 career games, starting 93. He finishes his Cowboys career with 611 tackles, 56 pass breakups, 19 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles and 6.5 sacks.

Williams' time in Dallas was a stark dichotomy of league-wide acclaim and unbridled criticism. The club's sixth overall pick in 2002, Williams once was considered one of the NFL's most dynamic, hard-hitting safeties and he became only the fourth Cowboys safety to make five Pro Bowl appearances.

The last three seasons featured less praise and more critique, particularly regarding his pass coverage. The Cowboys played Williams less and less in their defensive sub-packages. Last season Henry at times moved inside to cover the opposing tight end, a strategy to prevent Williams from facing one-on-one match-ups.

The Cowboys did seem to miss Williams' run support after his injury, and he had made a concerted effort to quell questions about his desire by reporting to training camp at a trim 221 pounds - four pounds lighter than the previous year.

Now, at 28, he's expected to look for a fresh start elsewhere. Williams has publicly stated his desire to impact the defense closer to the line of scrimmage rather than play mostly coverage.

"He'll ultimately have to go to a team that kind of fits his strengths, and that'll probably be playing him closer to the line and using him kind of like the Cowboys did when he first started off," Woy said Tuesday on KTCK 1310-AM in Dallas. "I don't think there's any question he's still a highly productive, very good player, but he's got to be in the right system."

The Cowboys likely would have addressed the safety position even with Williams on the roster. Injuries to Williams, Davis and Pat Watkins forced inexperienced players Courtney Brown and Tra Battle into the lineup for stretches. Watkins, who had shoulder surgery at the end of the season, has starting experience but is entering the final year of his contract.

Re-signing Davis would provide safety depth and leadership. Davis, the Cowboys' special teams captain, led all players with 20 special teams tackles and had 40 stops on defense.

Not celebrating today...but in time, the loss of Terrell Owens will drift away and the Cowboys will still be on the field and hopefully winning games.

The coolest part is that the Jerry Jones Gag order appears to be working!!! The more they shut the media out, the better the odds are that the Cowboys can take care of things IN-House!!!

I am so sick of the MEDIA!!!
