Default GDT: game 8/82 - Raptors (3-4) at Mavs (6-1) 7:30pm

Raptots in theory are a good team.

Kleber is upgraded to questionable for the game
Precious and Koloko are out for the Raptots.

Can the Mavs keep the magic alive?
Can the Mavs play more than 1.5 quarters of defense?
Will Kyrie finally have a Kyrie game?
Can the supporting cast still blow me away with their contributions?

Hopefully Holmes makes his debut for the team and we don't get Powell for 40 minutes

Not loving Josh Greens decisions so far. He?s forcing instead of letting things come to him

Turned the game on for 3 minutes and saw THJ turn it over 3 times. Classic.

Regretting that contract, but people say he rocks in advanced stats.

Someone will trade for Josh (if it comes to that).... Packaging him and THJ would be perfect

Feels like one of those games they can?t have a shitty game for 2.5 quarters and get out with a win. Real sloppy tonight

NBA really makes the game unwatchable when teams challenge refs to call fouls

Raptors playing WWF and fouling 30-40 times a play without a call and it just makes the game hideous to watch.

Win or loss, I?m out in the second half. If we lose, it?s all about Lively. If we win, wahoo.

Has Tim ever successfully dribbled the ball? I've never seen it.

Also Maxi is washed. Scared to shoot and lost a step on defense.

Eventually someone has to get Luka to pick up the pace on offense. We look so much better sometimes when he's out.

Refs did suck, but thats a poor excuse for this.

J fn Kidd...what is left to say about him? Those lineups were fn tarded. Maxi in long stretxhes being completely ineffective as usual. Then we go extreme small ball when we are already getting blasted on the boards. We cant defend pnr even with Lively, so small ball is never going to work.

It would seem like this is a game that Omax and Holmes would fit better. But no, not Kidd. We need Dwight foul and Maxi! They are rhe answer to next man up. Lols. Fk off. Holmes played well and the team was playing well when he was in the game. Then he never comes back in. Omax would have been good to throw at all that length. Hes built like Barnes and has size and lenght to help. But nope, lets roll out Exum and have our biggest player be 6'7" that will turn this thing around. Kidd is the equivalent of a button spammer in a fighting game. When he needs to make tactical decisions he just starts mashing buttons and doing weird shit.
THJ and Hardy must have got the flu as well at halftime because i dint recall any meaningful minutes.

Unless we have an incredible roster, Kidd is always goinf to handicap the Mavs potential.

Not playing Holmes more in a game like this is inexcusable. We were desperate for an interior presence and a pick-and-roll partner for Luka.

THJ may have had an OK stat line and hit some big threes but his play was straight garbage. If he dribbles the ball more than once it's a 4-point swing for the other team.

I understand that Maxi is an OK defender (i.e. he understands rotations and makes an effort), but he is scared as f*ck to shoot and has lost a step. He is not an NBA rotation player right now.

Nico has to be looking at packaging some combination of Green, THJ, Maxi, and picks for an upgrade.

It's really hard to blame Kidd for the rotations. Who was he supposed to play in the frontcourt? With Lively out he had only a few options: Kleber (sucked balls), Powell (okay but doesnt protect the paint), Holmes (huge defensive liability)

I used to think this team needed a stopgap starting center. With Lively being so good so quick, I now think that we need a quality second stringer. If Lively is sick/injured or gets in foul trouble, the rest of the bullpen is an absolute liability.

Powell-- third stringer at best
Kleber -- might be done
Holmes -- unplayable if a team is using length and being aggressive inside.

Iztok Franko@iztok_franko
Mavs - Raptors observations

1. Second loss and second game (like vs Denver) where Dallas was outsized & outmuscled
72 points in the paint allowed & crushed on the offensive glass
Tough to win these games when Luka & Kyrie are not at their peak dominating games on offense

2. It's becoming a trend
They surely missed Lively in this one. But rebounding and paint protecting have been a problem since the first 3 games
Mavs are now:
2nd worst in NBA in opp paint points & opp rim FG%
4th worst in opp OFF REB%

3. Raptors length & disruption made Dallas go smaller
Barnes (!!), OG & Siakam were disrupting so much with length & ability to help and recover that Mavs needed more dynamic players to attack that.

4. Raptors killing Dallas in transition
Saying all that (like against the Nuggets) Mavs were still better in half-court offense. But the Raptors generated so many defense to offense opportunities:
25% of their offense was in transition
With bad rebounding to much to overcome.

5. Raptors small-ball was way bigger than Mavs small ball
In my preview I speculated how much Poeltl will play. He got only 20 mins.
But Raptors wings Barnes, OG, Siakam, Boucher, Porter are way bigger than Mavs wings/guards. Punished mismatches on post-ups and off glass.

I've been clamoring for the Mavs to adequately address the center position for a few years.
Lively turned out to be a good pick but they still took a huge risk going into the season with only him as a legit sized center.
Gotta find another big center.

A viable backup center is needed but the true improvement would be a bruising 4/5 combo that can allow Lively to free up on defending the paint. Rebounding at a minimum and defense, would be great find someone who can do both.

Siakam? Are the Raptors still planning to sell? Edit: for what it's worth, I think no. And even then, does Green and Hardy plus even get there?

If the Bulls blow it up, I would do whatever it takes to get Caruso. Green + a pick. He is the best perimeter defender I've seen since Tony Allen. Put him in the starting lineup and move DJJ.

Why would we move a pf out of the lineup for another sg. And DJJ has been one of the actual bright spots with new guys

Exactly. I'm by no means a fan of Kidd. I hated the hire to begin with and I thought he was pretty terrible last year. But I think he's been ok this year so far, and I definitely don't see how you can blame him for last night. Lively is the only quality big on the team. If Lively is out, we're kinda screwed.

dunno if I'd give a first, but maybe a first swap or a couple of seconds. I think we may be okay at guard, though, compared to 2nd string center.

If we were offered Jarrett Allen or Caruso for Green and a FRP, I would choose Allen.

Holmes was actually playing well. We were playing solid as a team when he was on the floor. I'm convinced hes more valuable than Maxi and DP.

Omax could have been useful as a bigger wing to defend Siakam, OG and Barnes. They fn abused us in every fashion.

Holmes is unplayable, How so? He had 2 offensive rebounds ,1 defensive an assist and a bucket in 7 mins. We played well when he was on the floor. If thats proof of unplayable, i dont want to even know where the playable bar is.

Honest question is, how could anyone justify pulling him and settle on a super long stretch of Maxi fn Kleber and polishing this turd off with DP? Im not asking for Holmes to be over exposed with heavy minutea vs any team in every situation but this was exactly more of the same boneheaded sht we have seen.

I would agree we need a back up to Lively, but THATS not even worth pursuing unless DP, Maxi (thj?) have been taken out of the toybox completely or Kidd will play with them.
