German Mavericks 88 : Yao-less China 55
To mods: if this is the wrong forum, move the thread to a different section.
Germany just easily beat China (without Yao). Dirk was pretty strong (17 points)

Germany Beat China in Basketball Friendly
German national basketball team swept Chinese team 88-55 at a friendly match in Hamburg on Friday night, opening a good start for Germany's training session for European basketball championship in Spain next month.
Chinese player Yi Jianlian (R) fights for the ball against German national basketball team players including its top star Dirk Nowitzki (L) during the initial friendly match, which also served as a training match for both teams, in Hamburg on Friday night, August 17, 2007.
The guest team, without NBA center Yaoming, failed to contain German top star Dirk Nowitzki, who seized 17 points in just 22-minute field time.
The newly-crowned NBA MVP led German team to settle the match with a sweeping victory in the second quarter, during which Yao's teammates merely got one shot and several other free shots.
The friendly match is also served as a training match for both teams. German started its training session of seven matches before they go to Spain for the European basketball championships due on Sept. 3-16, a tournament deciding the qualifications for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
The two teams will clash again in Aug. 19. After that, the Chinese team will fly to Turkey to fight a tournament of six national teams, including Serbia, Poland and Turkey.
Yao Ming, who is on his honeymoon trip to Europe, watched the match on the spot.
Chinese NBA player Yao Ming, on honeymoon in Europe with his wife Ye Li, watches the match between China and Germany in Hamburg on Friday night, August 17, 2007.

Germany defeats China; Nowitzki scored 17 points
Dirk Nowitzki
by Moritz Korff - Aug 17, 2007
The German National Team used its first home game of the Pre-EURO period to entertain more than 10.000 fans in the Color-Line-Arena in Hamburg and to easily defeat China 88:55. Dirk Nowitzki (211-F-78) had his first apperance in an official game after dropping out of the NBA-Play Offs with the Dallas Mavericks. The 29-year-old spent two months of rest and then had some weeks of individual work-outs in his hometown Wuerzburg with his personal coach Holger Geschwindner. Nowitzki scored 17 points against the Chinese team, that had to replace Houston Rockets-center Ming Yao (226-C-80), but lined up with another future NBA-player, Yi Jianlian (212-C/F-87). Besides Nowitzki also Julian Sensley (206-F-82, college: Hawaii), who played in front of his family as his mother is a Hamburg-native, showed a strong performance. The German-American added 12 points in the victory, the same did Steffen Hamann (194-G-81).
Both teams will meet again on Sunday. The SAP-Arena in Mannheim has been selected as the venue for the rematch. Meanwhile, the German coaching-squad decided to cut Kirsten Zoellner (216-C-81, agency: Scorers 1st Sportmanagement, college: Albany) and Stefano Garris (200-G/F-79) from the roster. Both won't make the trip to the European Championships in Spain, that kick off on September 3. The roster has to be reduced down to 12 players for the EURO, which means that two more of the current team will stay home.
Germany: Dirk Nowitzki (17 pts), Steffen Hamann (12), Julian Sensley (12), Johannes Herber (8), Ademola Okulaja (7), Demond Greene (6), Pascal Roller (6), Jan-Hendrik Jagla (5), Sven Schultze (5), Robert Garrett (4), Guido Gruenheid (4), Misan Nikagbatse (2), Mithat Demirel, Patrick Femerling.

I did a calculation for you. It came up Germany 87 - China 56. Yeah that looks much better for China with Yoa playing.

Highlights of the game. 86MB, 6 minutes, high quality. Try not to use download software. Yi had a very nice and1 dunk in the 3rd quarter.

At 4:19 we see Dirk drop-step and fadeaway off his right pivot foot. Usually he puts a little pump/jump fake into that move first. Here he shoots it the first time immediately after making his move with no hesitation pump.
There's another highlight (the second to last one of him) where he takes the ball in strong again. First, driving in on a smaller guard and then And1 against the double coverage. (4:33)
I mean, I know that he is playing against a soft and less physical Team China, and that the NBA is way more athletic/agressive. But, you have to start somewhere. We saw a glimpse of Dirk playing a stronger and more agressive game, as well as the old finesse Dirk that we're used to seeing.

Note how effective dirks "low-post" game is when he actually gets the ball on the low-blocks..

I've only seen about 1-2 people that can even bother dirks turnaround jumper. I'll take that on the post all day long.

He's not changing his game. He is only adding to it.

Second win for Germany against China
by Moritz Korff - Aug 19, 2007

The next stop for the German NT on the way to the EURO will be Valencia, where the current World Champion Spain is waiting on Wednesday.
Germany: Dirk Nowitzki (30 pts), Ademola Okulaja (10), Patrick Femerling (9), Steffen Hamann (9), Demond Greene (7), Mithat Demirel (4), Jan-Hendrik Jagla (2), Sven Schultze (2), Robert Garrett (1), Guido Gruenheid (1), Johannes Herber (1), Misan Nikagbatse, Pascal Roller, Julian Sensley.

TrueHoop reader Volker saw China play Germany in person, and writes: "Yi Jianlian (23 points) impressed me: He drew Nowitzki's third foul in the first quarter, goes strong to the basket and has no trouble hitting open shots from outside. Good free throw shooter, too. At one occasion, he made a nice spin move, elevated to the basket, drew hard contact from two players and still managed to finish with a dunk. Defense was solid even when defending Nowitzki. Didn't commit more turnovers than expected from such a young player. Still, his passing is nowhere near Yao Ming's level."
Video of that dunk.

Yi is a COMPLETELY different player than Yao, he's much more of a skill/finesse player it seems to me. He looks much closer to Garnett than he does a center. I think he's a great pick and will be VERY good.

Another batch of photos.

Here's one and commentary.
Quote:
When we left he has been signing for close to half an hour and he made it about half way round the court where people lined up for the players. I wouldn't be surprised if at the end he would have signed for almost an hour. Really incredible considering his status as the reigning MVP.
