I want to talk trash about the Rockets and Morey, but Morey is in the right.
China flexing it's massive muscle to pressure an American company in America to punish the free speech of one of its citizens.

It's okay. James Harden apologized for him.
Also, it's not really a 'free speech' issue, especially insofar as the Rockets are concerned. Likely gonna cost them plenty.
While my sympathies tend strongly toward Hong Kong, Morey spoke as an executive of a private American entity, and the collateral damage will extend to the other NBA teams that do business in China. It's really hard to figure out what he thought he was accomplishing unless, as sefant speculates, he was trying to get fired.
The world will likely end with a madman's tweet.

Still can't cost the league you work for millions of dollars. China is a huge market, and it does matter if fans suddenly start boycotting buying jerseys etc. It isn't right, obviously, but people have to deal with the reality of how important our economic ties are with China.

i clicked on the ESPN story and was confronted with Harden "highlights", wherein he took like 4 steps and did the double pivot foot thing before hitting a 3. I just want him to go away as soon as possible.

Opening myself up to a neg shower but F it . . .
No one is infringing on Morey's right to free speech. China is "voting with their wallet" and applying pressure right back. The United States government has no moral high ground in the global arena. They launched an illegal war of aggression that killed hundreds of thousands in Iraq. They have their hands in the mass slaughters that continue to rage on in Syria and Libya.
Where was the concern about "authoritarian rule" in France where Macron (a US ally) was cracking down on the yellow vests? Where was it when Saudi Arabia tortured, killed, and dismembered a Washington Post contributor? The faux-moralism on the part of Americans is gag-inducing. But hey, Canadians are just as willfully blind and self-righteous.

Agree with everything you say about the USA, but your argument is essentially two wrongs make a right. The USA has done bad things, so therefore what China does it just fine. Also there were many people upset about Macron. The majority of Americans viewed Trump's reaction to Khashoggi's murder as wrong. Just because Trump did nothing, doesn't mean Americans don't care.

The shit happening with Blizzard right now is crazy also. It’s wild the amount of power the Chinese government is starting to have over American companies. A person in a global tournament voices support for Hong Kong in his post victory interview, and Blizzard is forced to kick him out of their professional league to appease China.

Exactly. (Except for the matter of those business licenses gifted to the daughter of the man occupying the oval office. And perhaps a few EB-5 visas auctioned off here and there to would-be Chinese immigrant-investors by in-laws.)
Ted Cruz follows Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's example and calls for the NBA to suspend operations with China, and disassociate themselves from Chinese censorship.
Then Apple pulls an app that pro-democracy protesters were using to track protest activity (and police movements) following criticism by the Chinese government.
There needs to be an app just to track developments related to Morey's comments, along with avarice, hypocrisy, and corporate cowardice.
One thought on Morey: His 'courage' would've meant a helluva lot more if he'd stepped down from his position and cut ties with the Rockets/NBA prior to making his statement of support for Hong Kong.
As it was, he was playing with Fritatta's money (and the NBA's), not his own. He calculated (correctly, so far) that he wouldn't lose any money by speaking out, and if the Rockets fire him, he comes a pro-democracy hero.

The Chinese political elite will be offended and aggressive for a couple of weeks but there will be no long term consequences. What is China going to do, follow the WNBA instead?

Not sure if that dig at the WNBA was necessary, but your point is sound -- a product like the NBA moves money in both directions, everybody stands to lose here.

Morey spouted platitudes about "freedom" because he believes in US exceptionalism. He and the league are getting burned because of it.

Lebron weighs in in favor of China. Morey was "misinformed". Lebron has better geopolitical information than Morey. Guess that settles it. The King has spoken.
