Iztok Franko@iztok_franko
Pels on offense they don't have a real point guard with CJ out. He was their organizer, to run a PNR with Jonas.
CJ led them with 5.7 assists. Ingram is 2nd at 4.7 but he Zion and Jonas are looking for their shots in 1-on-1 situations. Results in mid-range heavy game (2nd in NBA).
A thing that could give Mavs problems is bulk & size inside with Jonas and Zion.
Pels are 2nd in the NBA on putbacks, 3rd on 2nd chance points and Mavs are struggling on def boards.
Lively needs to be careful not to pick up early fouls vs Jonas in post-ups and in help vs Zion.
Zion is having a so-so season by his standards: 22 pts, 7 rebs, 4 ast.
He's still a force (a challenge for Grant) but not getting at the rim at the historic pace he was in prior seasons.
A lot of the rim shots this yr are now short mid shots and he is only 15/49 (31%) there.
Mavs have an opportunity to gain more ground early in the West. But like said they lost last yr to Pels without Zion,Ingram and H. Jones in their 3rd game of the season.
This team has proven that is better of taking care of business but they'll need to do it again tonight and on Tuesday.

Really interested to see what kind of job GWill does on Zion. Both guys are the same height and Zion just has some weight on GWill.
21-22 Zion didn't play
22-23 Zion didn't play against the Celtics to see matchup data.
Really no historical data to look to, but GWill did a nice job on other bigs like Giannis.

Trying to rebound against Zion or Jonas will affect a rookie.
He?s not going to be huge every night as a rookie.

Exum is so much better than Frank that it's almost mindblowing.

Is Derek Harper on hiatus or is Devin permanently in?

Big difference between this year and last year is ball movement. Think that's largely a Kyrie effect. Push the ball and move the ball at a frenetic pace. It will always keep the opposing team off guard.

27th in rebounding that?s tough.
Ich would still love to get Clint Capela. Him and Lively would be a killer combo.

The Mavericks entered the game with 155 3-pointers, the most in NBA history by a team through nine games. They also are the NBA?s most accurate 3-point shooting team, at 40.9%.

Not that I'm excusing it, but a large part of the defensive woes have been the first 2-3 quarters and then garbage time stats.
What matters is the Mavs are clutch this season and find ways to win. They play well at the point in the game when it matters most. Huge difference from last season.
The rebounding will eventually bite us in the ass. We just need one damn rebounder no matter the position. A guy that just does that.
I'm hoping the Bulls do poorly so that we can get Drummond who was rumored to come here at some point in the summer.
Overall though, the team is finally fun to watch again.

D-Live and G-Will are great additions, but I'm worried we're merely a slightly improved version of the live by the 3, die by the 3 team we've been for the past few years.
With Luka's & Kai's talents it might be enough to propel us to a deep playoff run, but when playoff basketball starts and we get players doing hard close-outs, we're going to need our guys (all of them) to take the ball to the basket. This is why I've been advocating for getting Hardy more minutes. He's a downhill player.

Mavs 100% have to be better defensively and on the boards.
Right now we are the Dantoni Suns and offense wins in the regular season, but defense gets you to the WCF/Finals. We saw how our offense wilted against big/strong/long defense in Toronto so our offense has to be even better while we need to find ways to get to at least the top half of the league in defense/rebounding.

The difference is they are FINALLY playing to their strength versus forcing something that can't be forced. I've been crying from the mountaintop for this for seemingly ages. Don't slow a non-defensive team down to try and force them to play defense. That doesn't work...period.
The best offensive team in the league is fun to watch and will win a lot of games. No, we won't win it all, but we gotta have something to look forward to for 82 games right now versus what was last season of dread and awfulness.
Mavs are always active at the deadline, so I see no reason not to get another rebounder.
Only snag is the lack of quality big men right now. Lots of teams need what we need.

It's a personnel problem. I don't think there are any ways to get into the top half, or even close to it frankly, in terms of defense and rebounding, without changing the roster. When your point guard is your best rebounder, you have a problem.
But you know what? This team is pretty damn good, and I'm enjoying the hell out of this season so far. I had lost hope last season and was just waiting for Luka to demand a trade. No more.

Some of it definitely is personnel, but I don't think it all is. It does seem like Kidd is taking it easy on them to save energy for the post-season which is great because we're on track to be back in the playoffs.
But yeah, last night was almost a disaster with Lively/Powell in foul trouble and no Kleber. If we don't address our center spot, we will be in trouble. Lively will develop physically and develop with his boxing out, but there will be games where he is injured or plagued with fouls.
And you are right-- this team is fun as hell to watch. Criticisms are just worries for the future and not meant to diminish what they've accomplished. I am as into this current team as I have been since Luka first joined us-- and the 2011 season before that.

Well Kidd is gonna have to play Holmes. Even Followill mentioned that. They have no choice right now.

Holmes has been fine. He has performed well when given time but Kidd isnt having it. He should have gone in around the 6 min mark last night. If Kidd doesnt like him, then boost his damn trade value and trade him in a pkg for whatever the hell he thinks he needs. Holmes coukd be useful, but at this rate he will be disgruntled by mid season.
