RE:OFFICIAL: Cleveland @ Dallas Gameday Thread
good move by the Nellie having dirk NOT front Ilgauskas after about 3 possessions in a row where They were able to lob the ball over Dirk's head. If you're going to front a player, there has to be alot of pressure on the passer and there better be someone back to help out in case the guard can still get a good passing lane.

Mavs FB points- 6
Cavs FB points- 22
Wasnt small ball supposed to get us more fast break opportunities?
We were also playing m2m earlier in the season but zoned up because the opposing team got too much penetration. Now we are getting penetrated at will. Same idea

RE:OFFICIAL: Cleveland @ Dallas Gameday Thread
surprisingly,
nelson used both fortson and bradley (the only two of the four-headed center that i feel deserve consistent minutes) for a good stretch there. if nelson only uses small ball to start the game, but consistently uses the bradley/fortson in each game, the mavs are in good shape, esp. if dirk finds his old form like he is tonight. dirk is key to us winning a championship and too much small ball will keep ball out of his hands. when bradley and fortson were in there, he got more touches, hence the offensive production.
daniels/howard need to shoot less esp. from the outside. howard's about as bad as walker offensively in my opinion, but his better defense should lead to more minutes.
nash needs to shoot way more. that's a big difference b/w this year's team and last.
both walker and dirk need to learn not to dribble the ball so high, esp. when they're driving. they're easy turnover targets.

Dirk's never averaged more than 1.9 turnovers per game for a season. Apparently, if the way he's dribbled on the drive makes him an easy turnover target, no one has caught on. How long has he been in the league?

Walker surprisingly has managed to hold his own against the Zombie....AND he is 4-7 from the field, too.
Go figure.....

What was that Walker told nellie once?
I can't give you anything in 18 minutes? He's 4-7 playing 15 minutes.
Anything else you'd like to add, Mr.Walker?

Daniels and Howard will both be solid players for a long time in this league, but I do think they force a bit too much in heavy traffic in the paint....

No doubt. I don't think either of them has quite adjusted to the size of NBA frontcourt's yet.

turnovers overall aren't as a big a problem for Dirk as it is for Walker. Dirk's primary game is shooting jump shots and making the standard pass, which limits his turnovers. perhaps, I shouldn't have mentioned his dribbling form in this game thread, since he hasn't really turned the ball over in this particular game, but it has been my experience that in key moments, particularly in playoff games, he usually turns over the ball in the paint, when during a drive, or trying to spin, he dribbles the ball too high and allows for easy steals, esp. when he drives into traffic. and it isn't really until key games like playoffs when other players make more of an effort to strip the ball, esp. teams like kings and lakers. i've noticed that Dirk is particularly successful in the paint, when he limites his dribbles to one or two bounces, and then goes for the shot.

RE:OFFICIAL: Cleveland @ Dallas Gameday Thread
Walker's problem isn't the high dribble, it's his stupid spin move at the free throw line. Any guard can easily pick Walker's pocket in Walker's mid spin.
In fact, Walker shouldn't be spin moving at all, unless it's him on a one one fast break against big Zombie.

ortegel's right.
howard and daniels need to pass the ball on the fast break instead of trying to do everything themselves. i've seen dirk open several times in transition but neither bothered to look.

Especially on the break. They're good finishers but I think they hurt our fast break becaue they won't give the damn ball up. They have to trust that they'll get it back. Hopefully someone points this out to them.

RE:OFFICIAL: Cleveland @ Dallas Gameday Thread
Dirk was just INSANE tonight from the field and on the boards.....Nash continues to prove Nellie's point(the only one he's got right) in that he needs to shoot more....Good to see Fin back on the floor even if it's in limited duty.....Howard and 'Da Rook' were all over the place but wouldn't pass the ball (oh well...)...
Oh and it's now official :
Walker is being Showcased. (Notice Jamison's LACK of minutes??)
Of course 28 minutes instead of the usual 32-35 minutes doesn't leave much time to impress but hey....If it gives #8 some confidence, it would help the team come playoff time in a more positive and less negative way....

Taken from the AP game recap:
``Everyone talks about our defense, but we're not a defensive team,'' Nash said. ``We shouldn't try to live up to that standard. Pushing the ball and attacking -- that's our best game. We've got to remember who we are. We're an offensive team.''

Funny thing is, that's the truth. When the Mavs race up and down the court, they are at their best. They seem to shoot a much higher %, thus fewer chances to be scored on in the fast break....that's one of the biggest flaws in their defense, so as long as they push the ball and play their game, then that should improve the defense....i think?

I'm hoping that Nellie is willing to go with a center instead of Walker whenever needed...it will be a must if smaller ball is to work.

Bring back pressure offense!
Seriously, the Mavs looked solid tonight - especially in the 2nd half. It was the Dirk and Steve show - like most of us have been wanting.

That statement interested me since he's done that ONCE this year...then followed it up by going 0-10 in his next 2 games. He has made 5 3's in a game three times...going 5-6 and 5-11 in the other two. Both of those were also followed by horrible multigame slumps. (6-25 and 4-18)
All things considered, I can live without it, thanks.

so so true.. the mavs are an offensive team and that makes them what they are. most teams get their offensive spark off their defense. the mavs aren't 'most teams'.. i feel that their offense sparks their defense.
kinda strange but in a way, their offense IS their best defense.

Dirk somehow found his threepointer again, 8-for-15 in the last 5 games, averaging 27,4 points and 10,4 rebounds.
