Default Yasser Arafat dead?

I just saw an Agence-France Presse article claiming that Arafat was dead, a tad sketchy.

Edit: Just tried linking to it and the link is gone...I originally saw it on www.marketwatch.com

Regardless of whether people support him or not, this man has been a stalwart symbol of all that is going on in the Middle East (think of how many Israeli PMs we have gone through). Castro, Arafat, Hussein - these are all names I grew up with and they are all fading into history. Weird.

He's been a stalwart symbol of a murderer. The palestinian people have just been given a gift.

Default RE:Yasser Arafat dead?

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Palestinian President Yasser Arafat was declared clinically dead on Thursday in a French hospital, Israeli television said citing French sources.

But Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie denied the report, saying: "I have just spoken to the officials in Paris and they say the situation is still as it was. He is still in the intensive care unit."

Israel's Channel Two television cited unnamed sources in Paris saying that Arafat underwent a brain scan and was found to be "no longer alive."

Palestinian sources earlier told Reuters that the Palestinian president, who was admitted to hospital last week with a mysterious stomach illness, had slipped into a coma.

It apears that if the reports are not true and he's still alive, it is tho only a matter of perhaps a few days before he will pass on.

His legacy can be best summed up as a man who had a chance to acheive peace for his people but let arrogance and greed get the best of him. Opportunity lost.

The fact is he has failed his people, there is a vacuum of leadership behind who could negotiate anything with the Israelis. There is a strong chance Hamas will fill that hole of leadership and take the Palestinians even further from the goal of peace. A bad situation only becoming worse....

Baghdad Bob: "The peace-loving leader of the Palestinians is not dead! The peace-lover is healthy and well, and he loves peace! You infidels have been misled by your idiot murderer Bush and the Elders of Zion!"

I heard rumors he may have been poisoned. An inside job.

The current Right Wing Conspiracy theory running around is that Arafat has AIDS. I doubt it is true, but it is out there.

The rumors of his illness provide symptoms that are consistent with AIDS. Low white count, etc. When I heard those reports on the news I thought the same thing. Not that there is anything tangible mind you, but it was consistent wiht symptomatic diagnosis. FWIW.....

Ding Dong the Terrorist is Gone.

Arafat Is Dead, Palestinian Sources Say

2 hours, 33 minutes ago Top Stories - Reuters
PARIS (Reuters) - Palestinian President Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) is dead, senior Palestinian political sources said on Tuesday.

The information from sources close to Arafat could not immediately be confirmed.

"He is dead," a senior political source close to Arafat told Reuters in Paris, where the 75-year-old leader has been lying in a coma at a French military hospital.

Asked to confirm Arafat's death, another official close to the president said: "Yes, he is dead. There will be an announcement soon."

None of the sources gave any details of the cause of death.

Officials in the West Bank said they had not been informed that Arafat was dead.

He had been at the hospital having treatment since Oct. 29.

Palestinian officials had said Arafat was suffering from liver failure and the lower part of his body was not functioning. He had been in a coma and his condition worsened overnight, a hospital spokesman said earlier on Tuesday.
