The Eagles were already looking good, but damn... Asomugha AND Rodgers-Cromartie?

Good luck throwing on them.

So we kept Free, re-structured Kosier's deal and it looks like we'll be keeping Spears... That's it?

Sure, we trimmed a lot of fat and there might be some intriguing cap casualties on the horizon, but damn - you'd think a 6-10 team with "Super Bowl aspirations" would be a little more aggressive... We don't have a single new face outside our rookies.

Yep, pretty uninspiring offseason so far. Although I will say it's undoubtedly true that Asomugha would have cost the Cowboys more money than they should be spending with so many holes at other positions.

I wonder if this means the Eagles will part ways with Asante Samuel?

The Cowboys could still land a great corner...

Asante Samuel, Asomugha, Rodgers-Cromartie caps numbers equal 20 million for 2012. And they still gotta resign desean jackson. 4 players will be 25% of their salary cap. Smart move or dumb move? I guess we will wait and see

Kept: Doug Free, Marcus Spears, Kyle Kosier, Gerald Sensabaugh, Alan Ball

Lost: Roy Williams, Marion Barber, Marc Colombo, Leonard Davis, Stephen Bowen, Sam Hurd, Kris Brown

Gained: Kenyon Coleman, big bag of nothing

I have no idea how a 6-10 team is supposed to get better by doing nothing at all - is this the plan??? Maybe that's why we're a .500 team over the last decade?

Lots of different ways of looking at that. One argument would that they looked pretty damn good last year after Red Jesus took over, and that was even without Romo (a huge addition relative to the second half of last year, I'm sure you would agree), so major moves in free agency may not have been all that necessary.

Another argument would be that the addition of Rob Ryan will be more significant in terms of defensive success than any player acquisition would have been. (I am certainly hoping this is the case!)

Another argument would be that we have several young players, from the last couple offseasons, who are poised to make large improvements this year.

I dunno...I for one am very excited about this year's team!

I think I would side with chum here. I mean yeah, there hasn't been a lot of turnover from the team that went 6-10 last year, but there also hasn't been a lot of turnover from the team that went 11-5 the year before. So is it really a case where the talent was lacking, or was it more an issue with the coaching losing its luster?

I am quite optimistic that the Princeton Parcells and his swagger-laden defensive colleague are going to put their stamp on the 2011 season. Sure there are issues, but there's reason to think this could still be a pretty fun team to watch.

Fun win last night.

A question about the new kickoff rules. It seems that hitting it to the back of the end zone will be quite common this year, with touchbacks galore. So on the one hand, some folks are saying "there goes the kick return" as if it's a thing of the past. But one thing I noticed last night is how *right there* the coverage team was when the kicks did come up short, due to their being five yards closer and also, I'm sure, to the new no-wedge rules. So...

If you were a special teams coach, would you prefer to just kick it through the end zone every time, or would you want to pop the kick up to somewhere inside the five and bet on your coverage team? I could easily see teams getting pinned inside their own ten-yard-line. Not to mention maybe fumbling it away, if the hit came quickly. I mean, they can't let the ball land (it's live) and they can't fair-catch it. You risk a big return, but is the potential reward worth it?

I thought about this same thing during the game. I noticed that when the guys caught the ball and it panned out a bit you saw the defenders already nearing the end zone. I mean, sure, if you get a hole you could break it even easier but there is absolutely the risk for good kickers to try to kick it right at the 1-5 yard line to try to force the team to return it. You definitely could benefit even more than ever before by having a strong special teams unit.

I think you'll see alot of kicks land between the 5 yard line and the goal line. And the kicking team will have a much shorter distance to travel..may have more violent collisions with good kickoff units pinning their opponent inside the 15 on a semi regular basis.

Great run by Tanner, without the helmet and all! Kid might be making this team. Miller isn't showing jack.

Man - our Offensive line has gone through some drastic changes... Colombo out. Davis out. And now Gurode out. I know this is going to make us more athlethic and make us a hungrier group, but sheesh. Not many teams change out 3 guys with essentially 3 rookies, especially when the other guy you are depending on at LT (who is a stud mind you) has just 1 year under his starting belt.

I hope these pups learn to play with the big boys and learn fast or we are going to be facing another year of Kitna suiting up behind center.

When Andre Gurode learned from Jason Garrett that he was being cut, he snapped at him... but the snap was high.

Gurode is a brilliant man; it's no surprise it went over Garrett's head.

Very happy Tanner is in. Kid looks like he will be a heck of a runner for us. Tough break for Radway. Not sure he did enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster prior to that, but he had a chance.

Pun intended?

Anyways, I think he gets IR'ed for the year and then has a chance to make the roster again next year. Although I'm not sure how easy it will be to heal from something like that. It's sounds like he was probably going to make the roster this year if his legs held out for another 3 seconds.

Being completely serious here - I caught that potential pun and ALMOST typed no pun intended... Too funny you caught that.

I don't know if anyone wants to start a GDT for this bad boy, but Dez is such a hoss.

We gave Josh Thomas to Carolina so we could keep Alan Ball on the roster.

Is it too much to say I think we have a pretty good idea of who/what Tony Romo is?

I wonder how good Romo thinks his life would be if he were just choking on the golf course. At least he wouldn't be taking anybody else down with him.

Well, that game was pretty fun. Now I think I'll go play some Super Nintendo.

Last night I gave up on my football team and that team's QB.

No, not in a way where I don't still care like crazy (my ring finger on my right hand feels like its broken after I punched the bar of my weight set post-Revis interception). Not in a way where I won't be there every single time they suit up hoping like hell they win.

No, this is simply me firmly knowing who my team is. My team is the group of guys that can beat ANYONE on any given Sunday due to the sheer talent on this roster; however, my team is also the group of guys that will more often than not find a way to lose due to stupidity and mental ineptness. I said it last year. A coaching change fixed nothing. We are DUMB. We are STUPID. Well, Romo is for sure.

You just simply can NOT do that. YOU CAN NOT DO THAT. You can NOT run for the endzone with the ball loosely held in one arm when a FG wins the game and fumble. You can NOT call 2 straight pass plays from the 1 yard line (told you that mentality from Garrett wasn't going anywhere btw). You can NOT let a guy breeze right through the middle of your punt protection to block your kick and ultimately tie it up. You most certainly can't attack Revis with as stupid of a throw as Romo has ever tossed with less than a minute to go on your 41 yard line driving for a winning FG.

This is who Romo is. This is who the Cowboys are. They are a team full of good to great players that regularly play stupid and mistake-laden football. A team that shows tremendous promise only to eventually step on the hearts of their fans, kick us squarely in the nuts and, finally, piss on us just for the smell factor.

This group will NEVER win a ring with Romo as the leader. I felt the same way about the Mavs (and Dirk) after the first Miami series ended and they overwhelmingly proved me wrong. I was ECSTATIC! I found that crow was the best tasting bird I had ever had the opportunity to eat. Hopefully Tony and the Cowboys can serve me up a dish as well; however, after last night (and as all of us know that have religiously watched Dallas play, last night was the tip of the iceberg), the odds don't look good.

There was a lot of positive to go around before Romo pulled a Romo and it is unfair for me not to mention any of it in this post. Great contributions from Witten, Dez, Ware, Lee, 3rd/4th/5th-string CBs tossed into the fire, and many others that I don't fully care enough right now to mention. Many of them contributed so admirably and deserved better than this. They smell like piss from Romo's golden shower much more than we fans do.

Like in baseball and all group sports, you win as a team and you lose as a team. Romo wasn't the ONLY reason we lost. Hell, it could EASILY be argued that anyone else behind center doesn't have us up 2 TDs in the 4th quarter against a team that has gone to the AFC Championship game 2 years in a row (and with us missing several key guys throughout the game).

Then again, if there was a quarter-by-quarter WAR-like statistic, Romo's line chart would look like the stock market just before it crashed several years back - as would many of his historic losses. The sad thing is that his promise from games where his line chart would look like a V with great play late in the 4th shows he has the ability to be successful in those situations. Unfortunately he is stupid, so his talent all too often gets stepped on by his lack of good decision making.

To encompass Tony I will use a line from one of my favorite comedians with a little twist on his wording: That boy's got a whole lotta choke in him.

i knew it was going to happen. when they were up 24-10 going into the 4th quarter i seriously asked myself out loud, "okay, what stupid ridiculous way are they going to find to blow this game?" i was soon treated to the answer. this team is a joke. an absolute effing joke.
