attention all Music Fans with an opinion...(thats you!)
not looking for a grand thesis and not necessarily a great proof or argument.....just looking for what we do well around here: opinion.
QUESTION: WHAT IS THE GREATEST DEBUT OF TIME? WHY?
make sure to mention the band and the album title....
(AND YOU MAY JUST GIVE US YOUR FAVORITE SONG/S ON THIS DEBUT)
I'm always looking for great music, and I figured my pals here at D-M would have some great opinions!
*****My vote is cast for Led Zeppelin I.
This is without a doubt the most mature (musically) debut I have ever heard.....Zep came in with their sound already at heroic levels as they meshed soulful blues with hard rock.....and just think Plant was only 19.....songs like "You Shook Me" and "I cant quit you baby" and one of my all time favorites "Babe I'm gonna Leave you" show the roots of the band to be founded in pure blues...and then you get blindsided by the likes of "dazed and confused" and "Communication Breakdown"....new bands just are not supposed to be this good.....but leave it to Zep to pave the way.......thats my two cents...what about you?

Metallica's Kill Em All...
Very intense and their band had the greatest performances from a bass player that I have ever heard... Along with every other CD they came out with!!!

Sike, this is completely without research, totally off of the top of my head, I'll post a few others later when I think about it.
I'm going to go with David Bowie's Space Oddity.
The self-titled track is obviously amazing, and has passed into the pop-culture realm of well-known songs. Bowie's voice is amazing, and he does some great guitar work on a lot of the songs. Other highlights are Memories of a Free Festival, Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud, Cygnet Committee, and Unwashed And Somewhat Slightly Dazed.

RE: attention all Music Fans with an opinion...(thats you!)
Well I am a fan of MOST types of music.... most notably rock (slight edge to the alternative side...)...
but I think Norah Jones debut album was phenomenal. Want a romantic evening with your significant other? Turn on the fire and pop in "come away with me". Her voice will soothe you.
But back to this thread, I think you should break it down to music type... It would be hard to quantify the greatest of all time unless you make the scope smaller.

RE: attention all Music Fans with an opinion...(thats you!)
not on the same level as led zeppelin in the grand scheme of things, but two popular debuts that I can think of are: (these definitely aren't he best of all time, but i like them - both good cds, and pretty popular, too, if that matters)
Hootie and the Blowfish - Cracked Rear View
Counting Crows - August and Everything After
u2, norah jones' debut was definitely good. it always bugs me to hear her sing though, and know she doesn't write any of her stuff. she sounds like the perfect singer/songwriter, but she doesn't write. i know a lot of people don't write their own songs, but it came as a big shock when i found out she doesn't.

Regarding popularity and fame, you have to include Eminem's The Slim Shady LP!

I said one of the most original, because many would put tupac's stuff right up there....and i am no hip hop brain.....but since you are so sure about Em's place at #1, where do you put Tupac dan/dog???

I may be wrong, and I do not want to give this band more credit than they deserve, but wasn't hybrid theory Lincon Park's first album. I'm not a huge fan of that style of rock, but that cd was totally awesome for a debut. Not all time, but pretty great for the last decade or so...

Yeah...right. Counting Crows are definitely overrated.
From a pure "reviews" perspective...it's gotta be Norah Jones.

George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" is pretty awesome. The quiet Beatle built up a nice repertoire in the late 60's while John and Paul duked it out.
That album and the Stone Roses' self-titled debut are tied for greatest debuts imho.

The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Moby, Metallica, and probably Nine Inch Nails enter my mind with their debuts.

Any hip hop fan should know that in 1994 when Notorious B.I.G. came out with Juicy, it turned around rap. Ready to Die has to be not only the best debut, but greatest album of all times.

LOL veruca....
The ending to resurrection.... that is the greatest 4 1/2 - 5 minutes of rock and roll ever produced. And then they do it all again on the next track (although not as strong, IMO), Fools Gold. Then top that off with the other tracks, each with great hooks and rhythm....

RE:attention all Music Fans with an opinion...(thats you!)
Other notable debuts:
DMX - It's Dark and Hell Is Hot (gruff new voice, great lyrics, hot beats. Damien is the highlight)
Bob Dylan - The Free Wheelin' Bob Dylan (what can you say, he's Dylan)
Beck (Major Label debut) - Mellow Gold (what can you say, he's the new Dylan. Loser is the slacker anthem)
Belle & Sebastian - Tigermilk (beautiful stuff)
Sublime - 40 oz. To Freedom (fan-freakin'-tastic. Brad, you left too soon.)
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes (i sometimes feel like a tool for liking this so much, but it's beautiful music. Crucify, Leather, Me and a Gun, scary good stuff)
The Strokes - Is this it? (not my favorite, but definitely a notable debut, if only for having spawned 8,529 magazine covers claiming The Strokes will save Rock 'n' Roll!)
Audioslave - Audioslave (I don't know how they could possibly live up to the hype, but they did. Like a Stone and I am the Highway are tops here. Great great hard rock album)
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced? (what can you really say about this one? Jimi being jimi, putting down amazing guitar licks, and an soulful voice. He actually didn't want to sing on the album, because he thought he was a bad singer! The soul of The Wind Cries Mary is breath-taking)

not over until my two cents is thrown in
the most influential debut in the known history of music was before albums. It was the premier of the Pope Marcellus Mass by Palestrina. The piece single-handedly convinced the church to allow the progress of music beyond simple Gregorian chant.
runners up:
Meet the Beatles
"Free Jazz" by Ornette Coleman

A few debuts I like:
Portishead- Dummy (basically invented Trip Hop)
Tricky- Maxinequaye (Perfect but all down hill for Tricky from here)
DJ Shadow- Entroducing......(hip hop is better without all that rappin)
Eric B and Rakim- Paid in Full (Eric B kicks the crap out of Eminem as does U2's pick Eazy E)
Public Enemy- It Takes a Nation of Millions (Flavor Flav rules and Chuck D kicks the crap out of Eminem again)

I´d say the best ever debut was "Are you expirienced" by the Jimmy Hendrix Expirience.
As for HipHop debuts I´m surprised no one has mentioned the `94 debut of NAS yet, "Illmatic". Produced by Premiere this one was an instant classic. Definitly one of the best hiphop Lp´s ever.
A very good recent debut in rock/britpop was "I should coco" of Supergrass in 94/95. And yeah the self titled StoneRoses LP was pretty good too.

Dizzee Rascal's "Boy In Da Corner" - Interesting debut by a young British rapper. Minimalist beats, and one crazy ass cockney flow. Good stuff. Most of it was recorded when he was 17.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience- Are You Experienced? Without a doubt the best ever Debut IMO (I can hear Jimi)
More than 20 yrs Hon Men:
U2-Boy (Electric Co. and I Will Follow)
The Police-Outlandos D'Amour (the one with Roxanne)
In the last 20 yrs: (so many strong debuts)
Pearl Jam- Ten
STP-Core
Weezer-Weezer
Matchbox 20- Yourself Or Someone Like You
Smashing Pumpkins-Siamese Dream (even though Gish was released 2 years earlier, it was an indie and was'nt widely distributed)
