Wow! I figured he would improve his conditioning over the offseason, but holy sh*t, he barely looks like the same person! Between his new and improved athleticism, KP giving him more open looks and more assists, and natural progression from a year of NBA experience... Luka should be primed for a MONSTER sophomore season. I mean, I always try to temper expectations, but barring injury I think there's no reason we shouldn't expect an all-nba selection at least.

The athleticism thing is overblown anyway. There are no shortage of great players that are not great physical specimens. Harden is the player Luka most often gets compared to, and that's appropriate. Harden is not particularly fast or agile for an NBA player. Kevin Durant, Steph Curry and Kyrie Irving don't possess top-flight athleticism either. Nor did Steve Nash, Paul Pierce, Carmelo Anthony, or... Larry Bird, for that matter. Sure, the league is far more athletic now than it was in the 80s, but even back then Bird possessed probably below average athleticism.

Luka's fine. All he needs to do is keep up his conditioning, and he'll be at least a top 10 player for years to come.

Rick Carlisle: Luka Doncic is 'working his butt off' as Mavericks expect even more focus on him in Year 2

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle spent 90 minutes on Thursday leading a clinic for coaches at the Jr. NBA Global Championship, an international tournament for 13- and 14-year-old boys and girls teams in Orlando.

And after Carlisle and Mavericks assistant Jenny Boucek finished the question-and-answer session, covering topics sports specialization to creativity versus structure to practice planning, he discussed another strategy.

It’s one specific to his instruction in Dallas: Luka Doncic’s offseason conditioning as the 20-year-old aims to build on his Rookie of the Year debut season.

“It’s just a natural progression that every player needs to have going from Year 1 to Year 2, especially someone like Luka that had such a great first year,” Carlisle told The Dallas Morning News. “People are really going to be coming for him in his second year, and the continued work on body and conditioning and developing his game is going to keep moving him in the direction of becoming a really great player.”

Improving his conditioning was of the Mavericks main offseason goals for Doncic, and his recent post on Instagram shows a picture slideshow of him working out,

Teammates took notice:
Kristaps Porzingis commented “Yessirrr! Keep putting on work!”

Courtney Lee commented: “Skinny luka bout to be a problem”

And Carlisle said he recognized Doncic’s drive to improve when he, assistant Jamahl Mosley and center Dwight Powell visited Doncic in his native Slovenia in May.

“I know he’s working his butt off this summer,” Carlisle said. “I know he’s very motivated for this season.”

Carlisle, who's held a coaching clinic at each of the two Jr. NBA Global Championships, which this year included a boys youth team from the Dallas area and girls squad from near Houston, didn’t give an estimate for when Doncic would return to Dallas.

But as the Mavericks wait to assemble one of the NBA’s most internationally diverse rosters for training camp, Carlisle worked with a group of 64 coaches he said represented 32 countries. He and Boucek wanted to make the period inclusive to best foster creativity and opinions and to broaden the NBA’s reach.

“Any time you have the opportunity to communicate and hopefully touch a group like this,” Carlisle said, “it’s not only an opportunity, but it’s a responsibility.”

3. Which player ranked Nos. 30-11 is most likely to make next year's top 10?

Bontemps: I'll cheat a bit and pick two of those young guys: Luka Doncic and Donovan Mitchell. If Doncic is as committed to his fitness as some of these videos we've seen this summer suggest, he could explode this season. Mitchell, on the other hand, is on a team with a chance to make the NBA Finals next spring. If he leads the Jazz on that kind of playoff run, a top-10 spot is possible.

Schmitz: Doncic. The fact that he's ranked ahead of several All-Stars speaks to the respect he has quickly garnered. So long as he comes into the season in tip-top shape and develops a rapport with Kristaps Porzingis, there's no reason he can't crack the top 10 as a 21-year-old next season, given his size, feel for the game, versatility and potential star power.

Marks: No disrespect to the players who fall in the 11-30 range, but none. If we are going to move a player such as Doncic into the top 10, then somebody has to fall out. Barring an injury, something that we cannot predict, the only change in the top 10 should be a healthy Kevin Durant rejoining the list of All-NBA and MVP candidates.

Young: It could be the last season for a while that Doncic is outside the top 10. His ascent is fully engaged, and with the Mavs set up to win more consistently this season, Doncic will be tasked with more responsibility. But he'll also grab more attention. He can dominate games and stuff box scores, and he has flair and flash that will make him an easy top-10 player for years to come.

Lopez: I don't necessarily see the top 10 changing that much, but let's go with Doncic here. Here's the list of players to put up Doncic's stat line of 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists in a season: Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, Richie Guerin, James Harden, John Havlicek, Grant Hill, LeBron James, Oscar Robertson and Russell Westbrook. That's it. Only Robertson and Doncic accomplished the feat as rookies, and only Doncic pulled it off at 19 years old.
