As it stands now:

Nolan Ryan - 5714
Randy Johnson - 3746

1968 K's behind

Randy Johnson would have to have atleast 6 solid seasons of 300+ K's for all those seasons. Johnson is turning 40 soon and will have to be at the top of his game until 46.
So the question is can he do it? Can he be dominant for the next 6 year's?

I say no. Everything would have to fall into place for him to catch Ryan. That means no major injuries for a guy pitching in the upper 90's in his 40's. The guy is really dominating but I don't see how he can do it.

What do you think?

How old was Ryan when he finally hung them up? I think he was in his middle 40's. Will it be hard? Yes. Impossible? No.

Ryan was in his mid 40's but he was no where near throwing 300 stike out seasons at age 46.

I think he'll evenutally fall less than a thousand shy of Nolan before hanging em up. Johnson just got the ball rolling too late in his career, it took him a few years before he learned how to pitch. I think it would a shame too because Randy Johnson is more dominant than Nolan was.

It would be very ironic considering Randy Johnson never made the leap as a pitcher until after he met with Nolan Ryan and studied under him a bit. Remember Nolan Ryan developed a circle change late in his career that was crucial to his strikeout proficiency and prolonged success during his twilight. That said, I don't see how Randy Johnson could catch him but the Mariners made the mistake of writing him off as old when they traded him to the Stros.

I won't disagree, but there is another argument. Todays players are arguably not great hitters across the board. There are more teams and as a result the hitting has declined. To say that Ryan was less dominating is not accuraate. Nolan pitched against soem great hitting teams. There were less teams and as a result, it can be argued that there were more better hitters per team in the lineups. Mr. Ryan put up 7 No-No's...that's pretty damn dominating. Until Johnson passes Ryan in one of the power categories....he'll have to be second.

Just a thought mind you....
