I'm guessing you haven't looked at the Lakers' cap situation in the last year or two if you really think that.

We just came in 5th in a 5 horse race... we are never going to attract a superstar to Dallas, maybe we give up this fantasy and try and evaluate talent and grow our own. Still can't believe we came in 5th in a 5 horse freaking race.
Mark, if you ever read this, if you pitched whatever you pitched to Howard and his people to the shark tank, you would obviously get turned down. Mark, you gotta do better!!!!

In the West teams better that Mavs as of today
1.OKC
2.SA
3.HOU
4.LAC
5.MEM
6.GS
7 DEN
In par with MAVS
1.LAL
2.UTA
3.POR
4.MIN
5.NO
Below MAVS
1.SAC
2.PHO
I will not mind Bynum at all, He will get the MAVs to the 4-5 spot if healthy and deep in the lottery if he is hurt!
The 7-8-9 or 10 spot in the standings is a curse.

Gary Neal, Corey Brewer, Psycho T, Jermaine O'neal, Dejuan Blair, Omni Caspi, Luke Walton, Jerry Stackhouse, Marquis Daniels, Carlos Defino, or Elton Brand.
Whichever one of these guys I'd take as backup role players. Brewer though I would definitely take as starting SG now.

Ok so lets say the Mavs don't get Bynum for whatever reason what do they do at center? They don't have the money to offer pek a deal that minny would even consider saying no too.

Ehh. How about signing Greg Oden. Take our time with him. Then sign lets say Jermaine O'neal for cheap? He did alright with the Suns this past season. Carlisle made Jermaine the all star he used to.. We'd have 2 centers for the price of 1

I'd rather roll with Wright/Brand than go with Oden/O Neal

O'Neal would be awesome for a 3rd string role. Probably not the one player we should be after right now.

Here's what I came up with. Figured I see what you guys think.
PG: Calderon, Makel
SG: Jack, Carter
Sign Jarrett Jack to play sg and sometimes he can run the point and Calderon can play 2 on the offensive end and make open shots Jack creates. Also Carter at backup.
SF: Corey Brewer, Crowder
Trade Marion and possibly Larkin for Varejao. Sign a defensive sf like Corey Brewer with Crowder as the backup.
PF: Dirk, Wright (bird rights, last to sign as we'll be over the cap)
C: Varejao, Sarge
So here's the line up.
Pg: Calderon, Makel
SG: Jack, Carter
SF: Brewer, Crowder
PF: Dirk, Wright
C: Varejao, Sarge

Marc Stein @ESPNSteinLine 7m
Mavs' post-Dwight interest in Bynum is legit. They ARE pursuing him. Yet it's been made clear they'll make detailed/careful evaluation first

Josh is a talent but with dirk and smith combining for 60% of our cap, there is no way we are competitive.

Dirk is not coming off the books unless we are letting him walk next summer which isn't happening. He'll get 5-8/year but Smith doesn't change the game enough to get a max contract. Even without Dirk, it's hard for me to see a championship team built around Dmith earning huge $$$

Shooting guard targets on the market that could be fits: Morrow, Gerald Henderson, Randy Foye, Gary Neal, Wayne Ellington, Terrence Williams... Henderson is likely the only guy there that costs more than the MLE. Still plenty of quality guys left there.

23 million off the books plus Marion's 10 million. We of course would have needed to dump Marion and use up some of that to have signed someone for 14. If you give Dirk 8 then you still have about 19 to spend next year.
Calderon, Smith, Dirk, plus 19 mil is not that bad of a plan. I'd prefer it to Bynum. We are already supposed to add 18-19 million this summer according to the plan, so spending 21 for Smith/ Calderon isn't scuicide.

Josh Smith signed with the Pistons.

Yeah, that's where I got the 14 million. I was disagreeing with Erica that we couldn't be competitive if we paid him that much.

Those guys all have a spot in the league. That's assuming we spend the rest of our cap space on a center. We're going to need SOMEONE on the wings.

The Pistons and Bobcats, man. Some teams you can just count on to do dumb $#!t any time they have cap space.

Terrible signings, especially considering next year's draft. Just very, very dumb. Pistons still have a nice upside with Monroe and Drummond, and the Bobcats can probably still be bad enough with Jefferson to have a high pick, so... But Smith will definitely "cost" some losses to the Pistons.

That is the only way bad teams can sign decent players though....by overpaying them.

So it appears the Mavs have just enough cap space left to, say, trade Marion for a center making somewhere in the $7-8 million range + absorb an overpaid forward. The Suns have Gortat (~ $7.8 million next year) + Caron ($8 million expiring) and (gasp) Beasley ($6 million next year and only $3 million guaranteed in his last year) on their books...
...I feel like there's the potential for something to happen there.

We could do much worse than Marion/TPE(and/or one of Vince/Larkin/Calathes) for Gortat/Butler. I'd much rather go after Asik but Gortat would be a better option than Bynum in my eyes. I'm starting to think that rolling the dice on him is a very bad idea.

Keep Beasley away at all costs, if there is a cancer in the league it is him.

The Gortat Caron and Beasley trade would be awesome! Yes Beasley may be a cancer but no way would he distract the mavs in my opinion. He'd be great to have and a think Carlisle and Dirk could contain him. Having veterans is the one thing the mavs are good at so I don't think Beasley would be a problem. Especially with his contract... That's an awesome trade.
