The Mavs got criticized pretty hard when they lost four of five games recently. The Spurs are in the midst of a similar stretch, although the defending champs might get the benefit of the doubt from the national media.

San Antonio has lost three of four after getting blown out in the Big Easy last night. The 25-point loss to the Hornets was the Spurs' worst of the season.

If there's any justice in the NBA, Bruce Bowen will be suspended for tomorrow's game in Detroit. Check out the above video (swiped from Yahoo's Ball Don't Lie) of Bowen giving Chris Paul the boot. If Dirk gets suspended for unintentionally injuring Andrei Kirilenko with a hard foul, a dude with a rep as dirty as Bowen's should certainly have to sit out a game for a blatant cheap shot.

Of course, the reason folks around these parts should care about the Spurs right now is because the odds of the Mavs winning another Game 7 in San Antonio are slim. And it now appears that the Mavs have a realistic shot at shooting past the Spurs in the standings. San Antonio, a 3 seed at the moment, is 2.5 games ahead of the 7-seed Mavs.

If the Spurs keep sputtering and the Mavs continue to clean up on their Eastern Conference lottery team tour, the Mavs might just move ahead of the Spurs when Tim Duncan and Co. visit the AAC March 23.

That should be a suspension no question about it, it was clearly an intentional kick. He brought his foot back before he did it. If he had just stepped on him it would be more debatable, but he clearly brought his foot back and gave him a kick. Dirty play from a dirty player.

I was scouring through some nba.com's recap, nothing about the kick at all. Dirk's throwdown of AK-47 was reported on national media outlets the night of the game, nothing about this kick blatant violent act by Bowen. If he doesn't get suspended, the fix is in. I wonder what excuse Stern will contrive.

Seriously, that footage was nothing. NOTHING. Whiny, pissy, moaning responses like these are what have made Bowen's reputation mythic.

Mavs need Bowens in sizes Small, Large and X-Large, and if they'd had a couple against the Heat, they might not be ringless right now.

Apparently, Bowen is to be commended for kicking a player on the ground. I'm with you man--if that's what it takes to win a title, then forget it.

Fortunately, that's not what it takes. It does take a level of mental tenacity, but that doesn't need to manifest itself in cheap shots after the whistle. I'll take a good hard foul on a fast break.

at least as cheap as Terry's little punch to Finley's privates. Its totally obvious, especially the second movement where he knees Paul with no effort to get free.

What gets me so upset is that Bowen has gotten away with it, not that he's a dirty rat-bastard on the court. He is the master of the little elbow to the skull, and taking away jumpshooters' landing spot, and even when he does something as obvious as jumpkicking someone or kneeing someone in the face/chest he doesnt get suspended. As far as Im concerned thats Stu Jackson that should get 80% of the hate, and only 20% to Bowen.

How about watching it in slow motion now. Paul gets a nice shot to Bowen's privates before the supposed kick.

I like how both players play the innocent after the whistle is blown. Not sure how suspend one and not the other.

I dunno. It kinda looks like Paul's hand goes up when he's trying to get control of the ball. And Bowen looks like he's just getting his balance and stepping away. I don't think either guy really did much of anything.

Though the other video I saw it looked like Bowen kicked him, from that angle in slow motion it doesn't look like it.

I don't see the league doing anything to either player. I'm just saying that you can't suspend one player and not the other if the league takes action.

Bowen's certainly gotten away with hits and grabs and they were much more deserving than this. I don't see the kick everyone is talking about. I guess he didn't have to stand over Paul for as long as he did but who knows.

Having had a look at that second video, I still think Bowen kicked him, but it does look like Paul hit him in a particularly sensitive area.

Paul does have a reputation for shots to the groin so I wouldn't totally be surprised.

Bowen still needs to be suspended. Suspend them both for all I care just show some consistency for once Mr. Stern. Terry gets suspended for an important game in the 2006 NBA playoffs for a similiar violation and Bowen gets off clean for this. I hate the NBA.

Well, looking at it in slow motion, Bowen might have been innocent. Hard to tell. There are two parts where I thought Bowen might have been guilty - the possible shove to the shoulder and the kick. But it's hard to really tell in slow motion if they were just flops by paul or bowen actually landed something.

I guess I'm not going to be as upset about the NBA not doing anything over this one because I think they may have a legitimate excuse.

Chris Paul is a dirty player too by the way. He developed quite a reputation around the ACC for his cheap shots. Just ask Julius Hodge what he thinks of Chris Paul.

I don't think the kick was really that bad, but that was not a punch by Paul. He was trying to pull the ball up and through Bowen's legs, and his hand came up after the ball stopped.

Not a punch, at all.
