So maybe it's...not the Thunder.
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/...ons-Bison.html
"You can search the database yourself. If you know how to search (it's a little complicated, but hang in there) you can see active trademark requests, filed July 21, for the following names:
* Oklahoma City Thunder
* Oklahoma City Marshalls
* Oklahoma City Energy
* Oklahoma City Wind
* Oklahoma City Barons
* Oklahoma City Bison
There is also an inactive request, filed by the same attorney, for the name "Oklahoma City SuperSonics."
Most unusual is that, unlike trademark applications for other NBA teams, these have been applied for by the NBA Development League. (And this whole time I thought all that fuss was about an NBA team! No, just kidding. Insert joke here about the quality of the Sonic roster.) I am not sure if that means anything or not."

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The NBA has filed for trademark rights to six nicknames for the league's new Oklahoma City franchise: Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls, Thunder and Wind.
An attorney for the league made the filing Monday with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The filing is listed on the patent office's website.
The NBA and the team have refused to discuss possible new names for the team formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics ahead of an official announcement, which has not yet been scheduled.

Barons seems like the only decent choice.

I say go for Baron or Bison. Those are the only two that sounds manly enough to be an NBA team. Wind sounds like a bunch of wuss'. Energy sounds like a sports drink.
" So Kevin Durant, hos does it feel to be a Wind, Energy?" Doesn't sound right IMO.

From Super Sonics to Thunder.
Why don't they get themselves a nice animal, or something tangible to have as a mascot for once?

Bison would have been pretty badass... I wonder what they could possibly be thinking.
My high school name was the "Storm" which is just as bad. We never had a mascot or anything because anything to do with "The Storm" would have been awfully gay.

Logo leaked?
Can't be confirmed but here's a little story:
Quote:
Apparently some worker snuck his tiny digital camera into the unpacking facility for "Thunder" gear, and it confirms our fears.
The name is Thunder, and the logo is butt-ugly. It looks incredibly generic. I mean, some might say photoshop, but it'd be impossible to photoshop through plastic. Some might say "unofficial" but the NBA logo is also on the basketball.
So, there's only two explanations from here on out:
1. The logo is legit.
2. The logo was made illegally by a local entreapaneur who is trying to cash in on the new team phenomenon.
1 looks very likely, but I'm hoping for 2. And if not that, PLEASE let this be a secondary logo.

I don't think this is it. Looks fake to me.

This whole ordeal may have happened way too soon, as it looks like New Orleans may get destroyed by Hurricane Gustav...

So maybe Seattle can get their team back (like the Houston Oilers/Texans)?

Well looks like it could be the Seattle Hornets, as obviously no one else is going to OKC.

The logo looks fairly legit to me, except that the "THUNDER" name looks like a pedestrian font and also doesn't look centered.

Yea it's definitely possible. I agree about the font also; everything just looks too generic.

I'm sure Thunder is the real name, but I hope for their sake that's not the real logo. Sheesh.

That is an unmitigated failure. Unbeleivable
Did you make those mockups Windmill? If not, where did you find that image and the one below it breaking down the "logo"?
