Malone says Mavs on list
By Rich Evans
Deseret News sports writer

Karl Malone got in the last shot in last Friday's war of words with team owner Larry H. Miller, though he fired it only in the presence of a writer from the Dallas Morning News.

After the Utah media had departed, Malone told writer Eddie Sefko he'd be interested in playing for the Mavericks.

"You notice nobody's using No. 32 down there," Malone said. "Tell (Mark) Cuban to dust off No. 32 for me."

As he did with the local media, Malone said his family would be involved in this summer's decision. 'I don't want them to say, 'Dad, why did you do that?' " he said. "They'll have a say in it."

Perhaps inspired by the current turmoil started by a Sports Illustrated article that said Malone's wife was scouting out homes in other states, another writer, Houston Chronicle NBA columnist Jonathan Feigen, wrote that the Jazz veteran is exactly what the Rockets need.

In a column headed, "Here's the answer for what ails Rockets," Feigen wrote: "They need another veteran leader, an unquestioned winner who commands respect. They need inside muscle, someone tough enough and mean enough to punish the next big man who dares plant an elbow in Yao's throat or slice slashes across his back.

"They need someone who will be a model professional, whipping himself and anyone willing to join him into fabulous shape, and then to be ready for every game. They need someone who will publicly say what must be said, someone who will hit an open shot, someone with poise and no loss of passion.

"They need Karl Malone."
