Default Bonzi Wells to China

Former NBA bad boy Bonzi Wells lands in China

link

BEIJING (AFP) — Former NBA small forward Bonzi Wells has sought to reassure fans he no longer deserves his bad boy image, after arriving in China to play with one of the domestic league's struggling teams.

Wells will team up with former US National Basketball Association coach Bob Weiss to boost Shanxi Zhongyu's chances of escaping the lower rungs of the league table, after they finished bottom last season.

The 32-year-old once played with Portland in the NBA, when the Trailblazers became known as the "Jailblazers" due to repeated bad behaviour by players and their frequent run-ins with the law.

However Wells, who arrived in China on Friday, insisted he had matured and he would fit in with his new teammates.

"I will not have any problems with the coaches. I am not a bad boy," the Basketball Pioneers newspaper on Monday quoted Wells as saying.

"When I was with Portland I had that image but I was young and didn't understand. At the time I was a little excessive."

Wells averaged 12.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in his 10-year NBA career, during which he played for the Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings and the Houston Rockets, as well as Portland.

His first game is likely to be on Friday, the Basketball Pioneers said. Shanxi are in ninth place in the 18-team Chinese Basketball Association league, with a 7-5 win-loss record.

Crazy to think just a few years ago he turned down that $36 million dollar contract from Sacramento. That'll haunt him for a while.

Crazy to think he lit up the Mavs in the '03 playoffs...

This is barely related at all, but did you guys hear Earl Boykins' Spanish team cut him for taking a holiday to the US after being told not to? I really don't understand what strikes some people to do the things they do.

China cage club sacks Bonzi Wells

link

BEIJING -- Chinese basketball team Shanxi Zhongyu has sacked superstar import Bonzi Wells after the former National Basketball Association (NBA) bad boy failed to return from a holiday in his native United States, his club said Monday.

Wells, 32, dubbed by the local media the best player to have ever graced the Chinese Basketball Association after joining Zhongyu in December, had his contract terminated late last week, an employee at the club told Agence France-Presse.

"He should have come back to the club on January 30, but he did not," said the man, who declined to be named.

According to a statement posted on Zhongyu's website over the weekend, Wells -- who was dogged by troublesome on-court behavior and run-ins with coaches during his 10-year NBA career -- went home for a holiday last month.

He was meant to come back on January 27, but asked for a two-day extension to "attend to some personal matters," the statement said.

On January 29, he asked for another extension, which the club agreed to as long as he came back in time for a weekend match.

Wells, however, still failed to return, prompting the cancellation of his one-year contract.

"After friendly talks between the club and Wells and his agents, we unanimously agreed to terminate the contract," the statement said.

Wells admitted in earlier comments to finding it difficult in China, despite averaging 34 points in his 14 games with Zhongyu.

"It was a big cultural shock to me for the first few weeks," he said.

"Since I have been here it has been all business and I haven't had any fun yet, so I am looking for some fun."

Wells had helped lift Zhongyu, who finished last in season 2007-2008, into the top half of the CBA league.

But, in an ominous sign, they got thumped 89-110 by 10th-placed Changchun on Sunday without Wells.

Apart from playing for the NBA in the United States, Wells is famous in China because he played alongside the nation's iconic centre Yao Ming with the Houston Rockets.
