Canadian heavyweight Kirk Johnson has contracted a torn pectoral muscle during
sparring on Wednesday. He will have to rest up for at least four weeks. This means,
he will definitely not be able to challenge Lennox Lewis on 21st June in Los Angeles.
So, a fight between Dr. Vitali Klitschko and Lennox Lewis may come earlier than
expected. Steve Brenner – responsible for the public relations work of the event in
June - named Vitali as a possible replacement for Kirk Johnson.
Vitali (32 wins/1 loss) was supposed to fight against Cedric Boswell, unbeaten in
twenty-one bouts, after the Lewis (40 wins, two losses, one draw) – Johnson
(thirty-four wins, one loss, one draw) fight. The bout against Boswell was supposed
to be the final rehearsal for Vitali before fighting against Lennox Lewis at the end
of this year.
But maybe the ultimate encounter will come much earlier now.
