Default Unofficial TV watching thread

I know there's a movie watching thread and whatnot, but didn't know if there was one for TV. I've checked out a couple of critically acclaimed series as of late.. One I kicked to the curb and one is freaking awesome.

Breaking Bad ='s awesome
MadMen ='s kicked to the curb.

Any suggestions about recent series to check out?

What happened to Mad Men?? They went from "who is Don Draper" to "where is Don Draper" - there was at least one jump-the-shark moment in every episode last season. Really disappointing to see one of the best shows on television get nerfed like that...

Honestly, I only made it through episode 4 or 5 in Season 1.

Can someone recommend some TV shows I can watch to kill time during this summer. Have been watching Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, and Dexter which I all enjoy immensely.

Anything else on Netflix that is worth me checking out?

I disagree. I thought season 5 of Mad Men was its best. Not as good as any season of Breaking Bad, though.

I've been catching up on Archer and finally working my way through Arrested Development, as Breaking Bad is the only TV show on actual television I watch.

As far as stuff on Netflix goes:

Walking Dead
Firefly
Battlestar Galactica
Lost

As for TV in general, I'd say the show most worth keeping up on is Game of Thrones.

I haven't given Game of Thrones a shot yet.. Well, I'm actually reading the books right now. I suppose I'll check out the TV series after I finish the books.

I highly, highly recommend Homeland.

BTW, if anyone has HBO, I recommend pulling up Generation Kill on HBOGo. Watched it a few weeks ago and it's pretty damn good. Written by the guys that wrote The Wire.

Saw Homeland, it was good, but still a step or two below Sons of Anarchy and Breaking Bad. Also have seen Game of Thrones and that show is epic.

Have started Walking Dead now and will see how that goes.

Homeland was good but fizzled at the end. I don't think a second season should have been planned. It's just 24 with "fuck it" instead of "damn it" from here on out.

Just started S3 of Break Bad. It's like a book. Can't put it down.

Deadwood is next on my list from HBO go.

The pilot for Newsroom was intriguing. I will watch a few more. Haven't heard good things though.

I wouldn't say Homeland fizzled... But it wasn't as good towards the end of season 1.. As for Deadwood..loved it at first until I found out the series never really ended..just got cancelled.

Aex, I never could get into Sons of Anarchy.. I'll have to give it another shot.

I wish it had been canceled. Between seasons the idiot producer decided he would rather make John from Cincinnati (one of the worst shows in HBO history, and one of the reasons Showtime started kicking their butt for several years). He promised a wrap-it-up movie that never happened. To this day I refuse to support anything involving David Milch.

I thought the show was cancelled because HBO opted not to renew the contracts of several of the actors..

I personally thought the first season of Deadwood was great, but then it went downhill the following seasons. The second was ok, but I could barely make it through the third. That show does make you want to take shots of Whiskey...

I agree.. but for me, it went down hill partially because I knew that there was no ending.. I couldn't enjoy the series as much as I otherwise would have knowing that in the end.. there would be nothing to remotely wrap anything up.

This is what happened with me as well. I'm not completely sure I finished the third season.

Another show to check out is Community. Probably the best comedy on right now, though some might argue for Modern Family. Community is certainly the best geeky comedy. BBT just doesn't come close to comparing.

I'll hold off on Deadwood. Might just watch The Wire again. HBO go is sick. Every show at your finger tips.

I literally meant the end. SPOILERs

All that planning and just in a matter of seconds convinced them to broaden their scope because he chickened out of his conviction. Maybe that was the point but it didn't feel natural. Rushed.

I think it was hard to end a show that was unsure of its direction. It got a little too cute with the characters, and the plot lines just became odd.

Shame because the premise was golden.

Enjoyed Walking Dead and started on Firefly. Can't get into that show for whatever reason.

Murph,
Sons of Anarchy starts out a little slow, but really picks up by season 2. Well worth it and is just as well written as Breaking Bad, if just a touch below it in overall acting and quality.

I may give it a shot..
It's should be my cup of tea.. although I didn't like a few shows that most traditionally like such as Sopranos and not huge on MadMen. All the smoking kinda made me feel dirty..

Totally embarassed but Im addicted to True Blood and Weeds, particularly in the most recent seasons, but its tiding me over until real shows come back on like Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Archer come back.

^True Blood is the most unwatchable piece of garbage. How can you stand it?

Weeds should have been cancelled by now, but I don't mind it since shows are weak this time of year. (The Real L Word! Yeah!...not)

Hell on Wheels is coming on soon, and I actually think that show is decent. Another layover type show until the big stuff starts in Sept.

Breaking Bad is the only non-reality show I'm really into right now. And the only reality show I currently watch is Deadliest Catch...which just ended.

I thought of another series I would recommend for someone wanting to kill time on Netflix:

Terriers. It only lasted one season and got incredibly poor numbers. So maybe it's not for everyone, but I really enjoyed it and it was pretty well received critically.

Anyone up to date on Breaking Bad? Last episode was pretty good. Great cinematography when person x (don't want to spoil it) gets shot and killed.

Breaking Bad has the best cinematography on TV. Amazing use of color. I think this season has been its best. That says a lot for the best show on TV, but past seasons have usually had a clunker by now, but this one hasn't.

I'm still a bit miffed that they've decided to break up Season 5 of BB into these 8-episode groupings spaced a year apart, but it's a smart business decision, so I can't blame them.

Great "season," but I think they've all been great in one form or another.

Agreed. One of my favorite episodes is, I think in season 3 when Walt spends pretty much the whole episode trying to kill a fly caught in his lab. There wasn't much for plot development but the entertainment/cinema value was through the roof.

I'd put near or at the top of the list for the greatest show of all time. (sorry Taylor swift) at least until game of thrones finishes up, anyway..

I didn't really care much for that episode.

Yeah the fly episode was easily my least favorite of any season. So pointless and tedious but to each his/her own.

The last night's episode "season finale" was absolutely awesome and shocking. Can't wait for the final eight episodes...

Kinda weird how the entirety of the show has only lasted a little over one year in plot-time, but then the finale had a 3-month montage... Reminds me of BSG's "one year later" season 2 finale.

It also explains the first scene of this season a little better.

I've seen various comment sections debating about what Hank does from here. I'm most intrigued by the notion that Hank actually can't do a thing. If he finds a way to turn Walt in as Heisenberg, think about what he'll be doing. His own career will be destroyed - you can't live down missing that your own brother-in-law was a drug kingpin. His niece and nephew will have their lives ruined. Skyler will go down, who of course is his wife's sister. His own physical rehabilitation therapy was paid for with meth money. It's Walt who convinced Jesse not to sue Hank for beating him up. It was Walt who convinced Gus to warn Hank that the cartel was coming for him. (I think that was how it worked.) The most rational choice for him may be to suck it up and not do anything.

But at the same time, Hank is an extremely honorable, "do-the-right-thing" kind of person. But what is the right thing? It's not as clear cut as, well, Hank knows that Walt is Heisenberg, so now it's Hank trying to bring Walt to justice for the next eight episodes.

A long way to go to get to Denny's.
