It's kind of a senseless argument really (no I've never had a senseless argument on this board, nope never) Starting this next weekend one of you will be proven wrong and one will be proven right, just wait and let time tell.

As soon as he got healthy, they went 18-1.
This year, they're a .500 team. All season. Try to bridge that gap all you want.

It makes no sense to compare both reg. season teams. Last year our shooters and veterans had more time to rest and practice between games. And this was a huge advantage.
Let's wait until the playoffs. This is where we will see how good or bad they really are (compared to last season).

I think that there are so many strange factors that have gone into how this season has played out that it is just about impossible to predict what will unfold for any team. All of your points have validity, but to my knowledge, we won't be facing last year's version of the Mavs in the playoffs, nor will we be facing last year's version of any of the other teams. Everyone has warts this season. Carlisle chose to manage minutes over trying to run in the red all season for a better seed. We'll see if it pays off.

Yup, wait and see. That's exactly how I feel.
The point was not to directly compare this year's and last year's teams. The point was to highlight the key difference in the two different forms of optimism going in.
Last year, you could say "We have seen phenomenon X, which is a good sign heading into the playoffs." Phenomenon X could be late game execution, winning against elite teams, winning on the road, etc.
This year, you can only say, "We have not seen phenomenon X, which is a good sign heading into the playoffs." Phenomenon X could be more minutes for the older guys, extended time without Odom, or whatever you want to fill in the blank here.
Maybe that's enough to get some people excited for a deep playoff run. But I'm skeptical.

Whoa ho ho. Another spurs takedown by Memphis, how rich.

Skepticism is understandable, in much the same way as it was last year. Last year's team limped into the playoffs. Losing 4 of your last six games down the stretch (3 of those to playoff teams) has a way of muting optimism a bit. I remember all the doom and gloom here after the Lakers stomped a size 18 in the Mavs' ass in the 28-point blowout. I remember all the doom and gloom after losing to the Blazers and Nuggets by 8. In the stretch where they lost 10 of 13 last year with Dirk missing the majority of those games, they still started off 1-3 with him back in the lineup. Dirk was clearly rusty versus Memphis, as you noted, but he went for 32-5-5 in a 14 point loss to the Pistons the next time out and they followed up a big win over the Lakers with an ugly offensive performance in a 82-77 loss versus the Bulls.
A true skeptic not only questions and doubts the generally accepted conclusions of others, but his own conclusions as well. A true analysis of how this team stacks up in a historical sense can only be determined when this season is a part of history. Predictions and other bits of trivia can be entertaining, but are utterly meaningless in the grand scheme of things. In the end, the Mavs will decide how things will play out, not a bunch of dudes debating about what the future holds on a relatively obscure forum. And cheers to that. Give me the excitement and uncertainty of a 7 game playoff series over wheel-spinning any day of the week.

This team is losing in the first round.
Anyone who thinks we get to the finals is being WAY TOO optimistic.

For the record, I will not put such a hard cap on what I think the team can accomplish this year.
I only voted as such because at the moment it appears to be the outcome with the greatest odds.

He said "right away", which clearly implied the start of the season, so he was techically right. We started out the season extremely well, beating top teams. Then the injuries came, before Dirk went down, we were like 21-5, or something like that. Then when everyone's was healthy again, we had a string of 23 games, where we won 20, and were up with 1 minute left in either of those other 3 games, that ended up losing, i think 2 of them on buzzers. Again, that team showed numerous times they can play dominant ball. This year's team so far didn't manage to do that. If that means they don't have it in them this year, i guess we'll have to wait and see.

This team has the goods to win it all. Players like Terry, Beaubois, Carter will have to step it up and show more consistency on offense end of the floor to take some of the pressure of Dirk. The defense, although not as good as last year, is still good enough to get the job done.

If there's one thing we know about sports, it's that everybody always knows exactly what's going to happen all the time.

Not exactly - if Denver wins tomorrow, our game is pointless, and if the Mavs lose and Denver loses, our game is pointless. 3 out of 4 scenarios mean we play OKC.

If MAVS lose to ATL, they play OKC... that's all we need to know.

And hopefully Carlisle will rest Kidd again; play Dirk about 30 minutes; and play the bench a lot.
The Thunder will not be easy, but I like the Mav chances against them better than the Lakers. Plus I won't have to stay up til one oclock in the weekdays.....

vs. OKC we can really utilize Wright and Roddy. And Carter had also plenty of good games vs. OKC in the last 2yrs. He seems to like posting up against their small backcourt.

Thunder played b2b and Durant/Westbrooked logged in heavy minutes. They definatly tried to beat the Nuggets to avoid Dallas.

i would think they would want revenge. i would also think they would be of the opinion that they are in a good position to get it.

I would think that was in Brooks' mind, although he denied it. I personally don't think it matters - Dallas or Denver. Denver is definitely no slouch of a team. Dallas just has some of the playoff mojo and experience though. And Dirk.

Still think OKC is the better matchup. Ron Artest has been outplayed by Barnes and Ebanks overall, though posts better numbers in the 4th/OT.
OKC is still far away from being clutch, so...

All signs pointing to Mavs wanting OKC in the first round?
Should be clear tonight by how many minutes the vets rack up.
27 min max for Kidd, Dirk, Marion, Jet, VC

I think Thunders plan was to match up with Denver and have Dallas/LAL take each other out.
Don't think they're necessarily trying to "avoid" us, but why not have Mavs-Lakers beat each other up while they're smoothing out Denver.
