One year lease. How much he'll care for that one year here will be really put into question. And that simple fact will raise even more questions, and every bad performance of his will be put under the microscope.... He should have waited to ink this deal with Real Madrid.... oh well.

Probably wasted pick then.

I really dont get why he didnt wait for the deal. Of course Real would offer him such a deal next season too. Now he killed all chances to have a "rebirth" year in Dallas and teams offering him at least a similar deal.

He's been a whiny bitch about the NBA for a while now.

I still hope he can contribute for us though.

The NBA lockout is already f*cking us up.

I hope I'm as wrong about him this year as I was about Tyson Chandler last year.

Looks like they should possibly look to move him (ie cut him). I don't see investing time in a rental. Unless it just doesn't make sense financially.

I was thinking the same thing.

Possibly being traded for us to get something back in return at least.

That's too bad. I thought he could be a decent long-term piece here. But if he was gonna leave, we all knew it'd be because he just wants to get the hell out of the U.S. Nothing the Mavs could've done.

This.

Pretty bush league move by Rudy. He had a real chance to give himself another shot in the NBA with a great team who thought highly of him and took a shot at him.

Maybe Rudy's giving himself the equivalent of a one-year contract to maximize his ring-pursuing prowess?

This says it's not done yet, but it's one of thoses "sources tell hoopshype" type of things.

“Rudy is very committed to Dallas,” according to the source. “The contract he’s about to sign means that Real Madrid is his choice in Europe if he chooses to stay in Europe, but he’s not closing the door on a future in the NBA with Dallas after this year.”

He wanted guaranteed playing time not "opportunity", that is why he wanted out of Portland. Even though there is a hole at the SG position on this team, there are too many players on this team vying for that spot.

Most likely, he will start this year at SG.

The situation is unlocked after the player agreed to indemnify the club will have white in case you decide to continue in the NBA since June 2012.

The agreement is for this season, the time to play in the League while the Spaniard Endesa suspended American professional competition, and three years from 2012. Rudy, you can collect about 12 million euros for the amount of the operation, 2.7 per year, will start the season under the command of Pablo Laso. Then, if you unlock the situation in the NBA, will be incorporated into the discipline of the Mavs.

Real Madrid wanted to secure the services of Rudy from June 2012 and also it would shelve its journey in America. It was the workhorse in the negotiations yesterday, because the player insisted on trying to leave open the possibility to continue in the NBA. He is confident in making a good season in Dallas, which has backed him after taking his services on the night of 'draft', and to reach a deal to continue his professional basketball career in America. Finally, we reached a meeting point in the fact that Rudy compensate the Madrid if he decides to play in the U.S., either in Dallas or wherever.

As I've said from the beginning, he'd be an absolute moron to not leave himself the option of staying if he has a good season.

Donny said he could "potentially" start for the club. He never said the SG position was for Rudy to lose. Also, Donny claimed to still have interest in Deshawn. I'm pretty sure that didn't help the cause.

Expiring contracts in a league where payroll will have to be shed is at a premium. Besides, Rudy at best is a 6/7th man type of player and not a starting 2-guard. He is too hot and cold. Besides, the Mavs gave up nothing for him because the coach has no use for rookies that aren't lottery picks.
I think the move was low risk-high reward. At minimum, you by another year in the development of Brewer, Beaubois and Jones.

It would be sad to see him go after a good year. However, there seems to be some sort of agreement that he could remain in Dallas or elsewhere in the NBA in case of a decent final year under his current contract.

If he wanted to go back to Spain in 2012, I wouldn't blame him though. €3 million per year in Spain, which equals $4.3 million per year in the NBA, isn't a bad deal for a player of his caliber and the ramifications of the new CBA could make it difficult for NBA teams to throw more money at a player like him anyway.

Since his contract is set to expire in 2012, he's free to do whatever he wants to do after June 30, 2012. Criticising him for potentially making use of that right would seem a bit hypocritical.

Agree. I think it was pretty smart, bird-in-the-hand hedge. Whatever comes out of the labor negotiations, the top-tier players are going to continue to be paid. The players who will most likely be adversely affected will be the mid-tier players, particularly those trying to get a new contract, which is precisely what Fernández would be. This contract with Real Madrid gives him some leverage and establishes a floor for future contract negotiations with an NBA franchise, without locking him in.

Euro agents seem to think the NBA lockout will be longer rather than shorter, which makes the move even smarter.

Still sour over getting merked in the other thread?

*And for your feeble old mind, let me explain...b.o.r clearly agrees that Rudy had a great shot at starting, thus his comments don't contradict my original statement that Rudy would/will MOST LIKELY start.

Ummm..Actually, I don't agree that Rudy would most likely be starting for the Mavs. Rick is still the coach of this team and his track record in Dallas is that every position is up for grabs except Dirk's, Kidd's, and Terry's. Rudy will audition for the SG spot along with Brewer, Beaubois, Jones, and possibly JJB, Deshawn or Butler if they are resigned.

JJB, DeShawn, and Jones have 0.00% chance of starting next year for the Mavs. Two of them most likely won't even be on the team.

Brewer is a 3, not a 2.

Roddy hasn't played in months, who knows how healthy he'll be?

Butler, if he comes back, would most likely start at the 3 with Shawn off the bench. It's possible RC would start him with Matrix, but less likely.

Thus, MOST likely, Rudy would start at the 2.

I would give Brewer way more of a chance at starting at SG than Butler. And I would put Rudy's chances above Brewer.

Butler didn't play one minute of SG last season.

That's pretty shocking, but good to hear. I know he played a lot of 2 the year before (and he's not effective at the 2).

Brewer as starting SG would depend on how much he improved his shooting over the summer, specially from downtown. Pretty sure RC told him to improve it.

If he didnt improve i dont see him starting.

By definition, you'd think a shooting guard would be able to shoot the ball...

I think that Warriors game, we weren't sure what we had in Brewer, once we saw how Monta just ran by him and lost him, we knew he wasn't going to help us on the Pauls of the world. Soon after, he mostly became a defensive specialist on wings, RC put him in the best position to succeed, he was not about to stick him a quick, small guard. Sucks with this offseason, because I'm sure RC probably would have worked this kid to the point where his contract is a bargain.

Rudy tweeted it this morning. I typed it into an online translator but it still sounded disjointed.

He's basically saying that the future of the NBA is important, but right now he has to focus on Team Spain because that's important too... Doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the Mavs or the contract he signed with Real Madrid, just the national team that he's currently playing for.

Ok thanks. Not sure why I follow him since I can't understand any of his tweets.

Yeah, he uses a lot of Spanish slang and shorthand which makes it even more difficult to translate...

I can't think of another situation where a player already had his next contract signed up. has that ever happened before? It certainly creates an odd dynamic and unusual incentives in terms of how motivated he'll be and where his priorities are. A weird situation.

Option after Mav deal is over. Interesting all around.

Here's an interesting piece to mull over, once you sign in China there is no opt out once the lockout is over. China's season is over in March, a triplet of ex Nuggets signed in China, KMart, Wilson Chandler and JR Smith. Lets say the CBA doesn't really change too much on the landscape outside of BRI, so we pocket the MLE, wouldn't it be nice to add one of these cats, for the playoff run.

Wilson Chandler is the only one of those three that interests me. The other two can get lost.
