This may have been suggested before, but do you think Golden State would trade Dampier for Wang?
Dampier would give us a good body against Shaq. He doesn't necessarily have to start. He could back up Lafrentz and play more minutes when we play against Duncan or Shaq.
If we got a big man in Dampier, I wouldn't mind us signing Lewis, which still looks like it may happen as Sund is trying to contact the Mavs for a sign and trade. Although we won't give up the Big 3, I would agree to a possible 3 way with New York that includes a Lewis - Van Exel - Sprewell swap. That may work for all teams imvolved.
Then we still have a mid-level exception that we can use to sign a Byron Russell or a Donyell Marshall (if his negotiations with the Jazz go bad).
This wouldn't be a bad lineup for next year.
PG Steve Nash/Avery Johnson
SG Michael Finley/Adrian Griffin
SF Rashard Lewis/Donyell Marshall or Byron Russell
PF Dirk Nowitzki/Eduardo Najera
C Raef Lafrentz/Erick Dampier
Damn, I wish this Lewis thing would be over with so that I can finally decide whether or not to insert him into the Dallas lineup on my EA Sports NBA game.

Wang Zhizhi is trying to defect from Dallas, not from China. The reason is lack of playing time. Wang recently averaged 11 points and 6 rebounds for the Golden State Warriors team in the Southern California Pro Summer League.
Dallas cannot let Wang play quality minutes as it must try to win every game to secure home-court advantage in the NBA playoffs. Golden State can afford to lose while Wang and its recent draft picks learn how to play.
Wang is a restricted free agent but Golden State could work out a sign-and-trade with Dallas for Erick Dampier. Dampier is a defensive and rebounding specialist and would be a more effective backup center for Dallas next year because the Mavericks currently lack these skills.
If Wang was truly disobeying orders, China would ban him from the National Team. This is what they did to Ma Jian, their best player in the early nineties. But Xinhuanet earlier had an article stating that Wang had permission to stay in the U. S. until the Chinese team arrived for the World Championships.
China's coach, Wang Fei, in a July 31 interview with FIBA, spoke of Wang as being a vital part of the National Team.

I would definitely rather have Wang than Dampier, but I'm wondering if you guys would do the trade if we couldn't work out a contract with Wang and/or Wang wants to leave. Typically, in those situations, the Mavs would get something of lesser value than Wang.

Then let's say Wang demands he wants to go a city with a large sized Chinese community. If that's the case, the following teams would be attractive.
Golden State
LA Clippers
LA Lakers
Chicago Bulls
New York Knicks
From these teams, the only players I can think of that we might be able to get for Wang are
Highly Probable
Fortson (GS)
Foyle (GS)
Probable
Dampier (GS)
Unlikely
Crawford (Chicago)
Maggette (Clippers)
Which of these guys would you want or can you think of another player? Remember, this is only if we can't trade Wang and let's be realistic about the trade. I doubt we could get a Tyson Chandler, for example, for Wang. Also, I don't think Chicago needs him.

Well, Chicago isnt exactly Deep in big guys ...
I´d do a trade for Dampier, for any Clips youngster or Crawford.

Crawford would be nice if we could somehow get rid of AJ in the process. 4 PGs on the roster is pretty crowded and I'm starting to thing NVE might stay in town awhile. I definitely like Maggette but LA wouldn't do it. Fortson looks like he can help us on paper but I think his stats are deceptive due to the Warriors having the worst FG% in the league last year. If it came down to Foyle, Dampier or nothing, I guess I would have to go with Dampier at that point.
but..
Honestly, the only team I see on this list as a possibility is Chicago. GS and especialy LA is not going to spend more than we can match on Wang. The Bulls have the flexibility so they could do something but I honestly haven't heard much interest from them. My prediction is that we see Wang back here next season or he sits out a season if China is sill pissed.

Harrington is probably somebody who could help us. I don't know how much NY is interested in Wang after signing Doleac though.

Charlie, some logic to your idea but the facts are Wang is not going anywhere.
Facts: Wang has stated he wants to return to Dallas (This just yesterday)
Cubes likes Wang and stated he will sign him once the World games are over
and will match any offer up to minimum 4.5, and since only one team
can pay more (Clips- no way to worry, they have to resign Kandy)...
Wang has made the China Team, which seems to have put the issue of him being
in trouble with them to bed. Besides they sucked without him!
The Nelson's both like Wang and his potential, which many say is the BEST upside
in the NBA
The Team likes him, mainly Dirk who is becomming a close friend by all reports
Wang working hard this summer to improve defense and rebounding, a sure way to
gain minutes
Cubes has stated all players will have their minutes monitored and cut to keep
the stars fresh. If that is the case Wang can play 3 positions, he will get minutes
Wang is a better than average athelete than many 7 foot stiffs in league
Wang's English is improving, making easier to communicate on the court, A big help
Wang cost less than Dampier. Also with him being a free Agent, way hard to trade due
to league rules. ( See Lewis, maybe we could DEMAND Dunlevy)
The China market is impoirtant to Cubes and Nelsons for many reasopns, they will not
pull away for it, even more so with close rival Houston now having Yao.
Charlie, this is all I can think of for now, but I believe Wang is here to stay, thank goodness. PS: I notice the icon change, did not die your own hair as well HA HA...

I know it is only one game but Shaq's line the last game they played.
Shaq
13-20 FGs
14-28 FTs
13 Rebounds.
Dampier
1-3 FGs
2-2 FTs
2 Rebs
5 Fouls
Not exactly a Shaq-stopper.. I think we have to give nelson and cuban a chance to try and play shaq differently. Cuban even stated that Candi-man can't stop shaq so why even go that route. I keep Wang.

Fortson sounds pretty good. Good rebounding, good defensive presence... not too good on the offensive end but then again why do we have nash, finley, nitzowki, lafrentz, nick and lewis for?

RE:Wang for Dampier
Here you go madape:
Quote:
Dallas trades: C Erick Dampier (12.3 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 0.8 apg in 32.5 minutes)
SF Jerry Stackhouse (13.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 4.0 apg in 29.8 minutes)
PG Dan Dickau (2.2 ppg, 0.6 rpg, 0.9 apg in 6.8 minutes)
Dallas receives: SG Eddie Jones (17.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.2 apg in 37.0 minutes)
C Wang Zhizhi (2.9 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 0.1 apg in 7.1 minutes)
Change in team outlook: -8.2 ppg, -11.3 rpg, and -2.4 apg.
Miami trades: SG Eddie Jones (17.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.2 apg in 37.0 minutes)
C Wang Zhizhi (2.9 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 0.1 apg in 7.1 minutes)
Miami receives: C Erick Dampier (12.3 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 0.8 apg in 74 games)
SF Jerry Stackhouse (13.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 4.0 apg in 26 games)
PG Dan Dickau (2.2 ppg, 0.6 rpg, 0.9 apg in 43 games)
Change in team outlook: +8.2 ppg, +11.3 rpg, and +2.4 apg.
TRADE ACCEPTED
|
Why does Miami do it?
Someone is going to have to man the middle while Shaq is out with his annual toe injury. Plus this gives them a few more players on the roster that people have actually heard of.
Why does Dallas do it?
So we could create a thread called "Jones should start over Finley", and of course so Shawn Bradley's PT could be maximized.

Hmmmmm, my attempt at morning sarcasm has failed...I even used the stupid moon emoticon and everything.

Wang was never given a chance to show his truly offensive skills.
Just look at his per48 stats and you'll see that, much like Damp, he would excel given enough PT.
