Default Feisty Mavs Speed Through Work-out (article)

AM Practice Report
Feisty Mavs Speed Through Workout
By Mike Fisher -- DB.com

How feisty are the Mavs on the morning after the loss to the Lakers?

Backup players are being made to run windsprints.

Avery Johnson is snapping back angrily at silly media questions.

And Dirk Nowitzki is treating an American Airlines Center delivery alley like it’s his personal Autobahn.

The 75-Member Staff spies at Wednesday’s team practice relay to me what could be construed as good news after the 102-100 home loss to LA on: The Mavs seem intense, focused, and pissed.

The intensity and focus – especially among the front-of-the-rotation guys – was strong enough that Avery excused them from part of the workout, allowing them to leave after film study.

“The men didn’t like what they saw on (film),’’ he said. “Especially for the first 30 minutes or so of the game. They were really focused and disappointed (because) they saw what we can do when we execute our system and when we hustle.’’

But the guys who were left behind – Lue and Allen and the like – were the ones really hustling today. They found themselves in a free-throw-or-die challenge that was not meant to be fun and games.

Johnson barked out the name of a player (“Juwan Howard!’’) who had to go to the line and succeed at a pre-determined rate. And if the designated player didn’t make the requisite number of FTs?

Windsprints for the rest of the team.

“Up and back!’’ Avery screamed. “Up and back!’’

Johnson was asked by a media member about the definition of a “big game,’’ comparing the coach’s “big-game’’ remarks following a game against lowly Minnesota to his “big-game’’ remarks concerning the Lakers, Celtics and Spurs, this week’s triple-header challenge.

And a surly Avery snapped right back at the reporter, accusing him of taking the coach’s quotes “out of context.’’ (Fish note: It goes without even asking that Thursday's 7 p.m. homie against Boston qualifies, right?)

That approach is rare for Johnson, of course. He demonstrated that when the Morning News’ Eddie Sefko asked him about the decision to play Jason Kidd for just 28 minutes in the Lakers game.

“Well, that certainly wasn’t one of Jason’s best games,’’ said Johnson. “There won’t be a lot of nights when he scores one point. Last night was not one of his best.’’

(Here’s a good postgame Q-and-A with Kidd.)

With the Mavs losing after falling behind by 25, last night was not anybody’s best. And the foul mood continued even beyond the Mavs’ parking garage, as The 75-Member Staff witnessed a black Yukon speeding up an AAC alley … and only at the last minute its driver noticing that metal poles blocked his exit. So the driver put the Yukon in reverse and, at a rather high speed, strunt-drove his way in reverse, back down the alley.

The man behind the wheel? Formula One racer Dirk Nowitzki.

That's just dumb, and dangerous.

If I were Cuban, knowing how passionate Dirk is about stuff, I wouldn't let his big pissed off ass drive himself home after a game like that. Can you imagine??? "Nowitzki breaks leg in car crash after loss"

Yeah that would go over well.

lighten up !

I like the words focused, intense, and pissed... lets hope this translates to the game along with execution. Intensity without execution means nothing.

Avery should be the one doing windsprints after some of those horrible coaching decisions against the Lakers. But yeah the team didn't execute their offense in the first half and was forced to play a gambling game which almost got them a win.

So is Dirk pissed about the support he's gotten from his teammates on the court or is he pissed with the direction the coach taking this thing?

Dirk has a Yukon? I thought he had a CL65. Maybe he has both huh. But if he has both, why would he drive th Yukon? More importantly, why doesn't he have an SLR 722? Those superstars and their weird taste in cars.......

Channeling Lou Gosset Jr from "Officer and a Gentleman" is not the answer for a bunch of millionaire veteran athletes with a winning record. Windsprints for missing free throws? ... Mavs are in trouble.

We can beat the Celtics, we can beat anyone on any given night, lets hope that intensity carries on to tonight.

Calm down there... we are all concerned that he is even driving a crappy American car. Should either be an Audi, BMW, or Mercedes.

He wants some American Muscle. He sees the BMW's and Benz's way too often in Germany.

take the yukon on the court and drive across the celtics bench! then we win. Even if it is a flagrant 2.

He wouldn´t fit in Mercedes Benz SL Version anyway. Dirk gets the Yukon for free, because of doing some promo for the local dealer.

I wonder why he is driving an AMG. This somehow doesn´t match with his personality.

But beside this. Driving tuned cars doesn´t make sense in a land with speedlimit. It must be rather frustrating.
