Default important ? don't know... dirk - ranking #12...

11.19.04

German television network ZDF released the results of a survey taken of German viewers, asking their opinion regarding the top German athletes of the past century. Dirk came in at #12.

While some may be surprised that Dirk didn't place higher, it is worth remembering that basketball is not one of the more familiar or popular sports in Germany, a country far more oriented toward soccer, tennis, and Formula-1 racing. It is also noteworthy that Dirk placed ahead of such football luminaries as Rudi Völler (virtually a national hero) and Jürgen Klinsmann, skijumper Sven Hannawald, and skater Katarina Witt. Formula-1 superstar Michael Schumacher was the overall first place winner.

The complete list can be found in PDF format here (must have Adobe Acrobat to read).
