I've been playing one on one, and I win everytime I go first and lose every time I don't. Frustrating.

Maybe I'm stupid, but how does it determine your number. As in, how many extra dice you get each round.
I thought it gave you one for each territory you controlled, but that doesnt seem to be the case.

Yeah, I think its pretty much impossible to win one on one when you don't go first.

It's how many dice you have on the board.

I figured it out, and actually I think its the greatest number of contiguous territories you control. So if you have a group of 6, a group of 10, and 1 off by itself in a corner crying itself to sleep everynight, then you have 10 "points", meaning you get 10 extra dice at the end of that turn.

its fun to find a map with a good isthums and to just battle it out over a few prime territories. The computer isn't as agressive as it could be, and seems to pause once it breaks through, rather than attacking.

The key is to try and make all of your territories contiguous so that none of them can be isolated by your opponent.
