Hes the typical 2nd rounder. There's a lot to like. We got nice value there. But as of now he's a raw big man who teams were scared of because he's 24 which is wierd to me because I want the collegiate guy who's battle tested and stayed 4 years. If he was 19 he would've been a first rounder. Nothing not to like about him on the court. Mentally may be another story.

Here's one scenario after this draft pick I could think of.. Trade Evans, Hammons, and maybe someone else to free up space adding a veteran free agent.

Who was that potential draftee last season named Robert something that ended up getting picked up as an UFA by the Lakers and never amounted to anything? This seems to be a similar situation but hopefully with a different result.

Potential, Rookie, with low motor doesn't sound like a Carlisle guy to me. He does look like he could be a force in the paint though if Rick can get him motivated. Imagine he'll have a very short leash next season.

I rescind my bitching... He looks skilled and decent and honestly can't ask for much more at #46. Here's hoping he turns into a stud.

McGee has no post game whatsoever. This kid apparently does.

I'm happy with a Drummond starter kit. Bigs took the Warriors to 7. The so-called death of the big man has been greatly exaggerated.

Remember how good we were with a guy who could just block shots and not be terrible on the lob (Mejri)? This guy can do that, rebound, and even get some post-ups. Sounds solid to me, particularly for the 46th pick. Dude has been described as having lottery-level talent.
He's lazy? He's a second-rounder with a make-good contract. He washes out of the league and no one cares that we wasted a mid second. He gives us that rebounding and defense we always needed behind a starter and next to Mejri? That's a solid second rounder and better than Singh.

Decent draft video on Hammons.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTjHHICQMy4
Honestly, if Bernard James could get a roster spot, then I don't see why Hammons couldn't. Pretty much no downside with a pick like this. 24.7 points per 40 is pretty good. Soft hands, big body, good rebounder, defender, and shot blocker, good low poster scorer, can shoot from the outside. Negative is his motor, but what do you except with a pick this low.

@EarlKSneed: Donnie Nelson says drafting of A.J. Hammons won't impact the team's pursuit of free agents on July 1. "I don't think there's any relation."

Hi! I'm a first time poster and Purdue fan here. He's actually not raw at all. He's pretty well-developed skill-wise. His basketball IQ isn't great but I think it's good enough for now and can continue to get better.
Yes, it is believed that he doesn't "love" the game but I think he's learned to realize that this is his meal-ticket (he's naturally built for it) and it showed this past season, as he was very consistent as a senior. He can shoot out to college 3PT range as well, but you don't really want him doing that unless he's wide-open. He has very good shot-blocking instincts and weirdly, he blocks almost all of his shots using his left hand even though he's a right-handed player.
Here's some highlights on him from this past season (Note: his weight is more in the 250-260 range, not 280 as listed in the video):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWHEr6ja_pg
I hope this helps you guys have more insight on him.

Hammons looks very skilled. My first thought(body composition and facially)was actually Michael Olowakandi lol
On closer inspection he has a touch of Enes Kanter about him. Good footwork and a light touch around the rim.

Very weird not seeing a 7'5 unknown giant out of India/China drafted by the Mavs for merchandise usage.
May aswell started to take the Draft seriously.

Well I say he's raw because the biggest knock on him is that he was 23 dominating against 18 year olds. I don't see that as a knock but they believe the jump from 18-19 year old collegiate guys to NBA veterans is going to be big.

He doesn't appear to be very athletic. A lot of his close to the rim shots are layups instead of hard dunks. So honestly, his play kind of looks like a Zaza type player. The difference with Mejri and especially JaValle is that those guys were 7 footers that could leap like the 6'6" guys. This will hurt his blocks and defense in the NBA as opposing players learn to shoot over taller guys without significant leaping ability.
I don't see this as hurting his offense and possibly rebounding too much though as he will probably just use his big body to get into position. I project him as more of a raw Enes Kanter that might develop into more of an offensive player rather than defensive.

I wouldnt say he's raw, but he's not 100% polished either. I like that he's able to slip screens well and roll to the basket. I guess if he's wide open, he can use that turn around shot, but it had a lot of extra movement to it.
Hope he gets a shot here. The ability is there.

I think it will depend on who we sign for a center this season. If we get a guy like Howard or Whiteside then he is most likely D-league bound at best. If we spend all of our money on a wing and PG and end up with a Hibbert caliber center then I could see Rick giving him an opportunity.
I'm wondering how much we'd know about Anderson if Parsons wouldn't have gotten hurt. Hell, we went through nearly a half season with virtually no meaningful minutes for Salah when McGee was out and Zaza was getting run into the ground. It wasn't until Rick gave up completely on McGee after he came back from injury that he gave Salah an opportunity.
I love everything about Rick except for that one low tolerance for inexperienced mistakes issue. I do understand why he does it though.

That's a fairly odd quote considering Donnie stated in the post draft presser that it was no secret the Mavs have a hole a center (hence drafting Hammons).

We still absolutely need a starting center, which is what we were after before the draft too. Our free agency plans haven't changed. We just have a lottery ticket that may turn into a decent backup.

Not everyone in college basketball playing significant minutes is an 18 y.o. youngster. In fact, college basketball was very senior-laden this past season (i.e. 22 and 23 y.o. guys). So, I don't think you have a valid point in that regard because it's simply not true. His motor, yes, that can be questioned but his experience and skills, not so much.

I watch a lot of big 10 games and have probably watched 10 games a year of this guy. The potential is there especially on the offensive end. He can block some shots. I don't think he will be much of an on the ball the defender except in the paint and small ball lineups will send him to the bench. My take is he was a man among boys in college after his 1st year and was able to dominate based on his physical advantages. Hope it works out but I'm not optimistic he has the competitive fire to put in the work.
Hopefully RC works his magic and motivates this guy because RC knows how to use players who are skilled. Gonna be some doghouse time I expect so they better build a big one. My fear is he will struggle as he no longer will have those advantages against the best in the world but he could become a nice offensive low post player and the Mavs could really use that.
I would of taken Yogi Ferrell or Isiah Taylor. If Yogi was 2 inches taller he be a top 15 pick. He does everything well and can really shoot from deep. He took 2nd in the college 3 point contest and is exceptional at the pull up jumper in transition. Taylor does most every thing well except shoot consistently but that is something he work out. He was outstanding from the FT line so he can shoot. Anyway, these 2 did not get drafted and I could see Yogi being a summer league star. So maybe the Mavs can land one still.
I'm kind of disappointed the Mavs didn't buy a pick. I really liked that McCaw kid. Then of all teams to buy the pick and take McCaw, it was Golden St.
