Shawn Kemp to Dallas?
Hurting Mavs looking for aid from NBA
By ART GARCIA
Star-Telegram Staff Writer
If the Mavericks are granted a hardship exception because of injury issues, Shawn Kemp might be in a Dallas uniform in the near future.
DALLAS -- Shawn Kemp in a Mavericks uniform?
Unlikely, but don't rule it out. The loss of Keith Van Horn for possibly the rest of the season and the playoffs with a broken right hand has the Mavs scrambling for help.
The question becomes how to get that help.
Though the Mavs (55-19) snapped a season-high three-game losing streak with Sunday afternoon's 103-79 rout of Denver at American Airlines Center, injuries have kept the team in limbo.
The Mavs petitioned the league Saturday night for a hardship exception to sign a free agent. According to the rule, at least four players would have to be injured and sidelined at least two weeks.
Devin Harris (quadriceps), Marquis Daniels (neck) and Adrian Griffin (hamstring) are also out. The injuries for each varies, as does the timetable for their returns.
Pavel Podkolzin could also be part of the injured list, though he falls into a gray area. The center is recovering from a stress fracture in his right foot and is essentially on a rehabilitation assignment with the Fort Worth Flyers.
President of basketball operations Donnie Nelson hopes to get a ruling from the league today or Tuesday. Finding a replacement for Van Horn to play behind Dirk Nowitzki is the focus.
The team has checked into Kemp, a former All-Star power forward who retired three years ago because he was overweight. Kemp, 36, has reportedly slimmed down in an attempt to make a comeback and met with coach Avery Johnson recently in Houston.
Kemp's baggage, however, is heavier than he is. He has violated the league's anti-drug policy three times and has had several run-ins with the law.
Other veterans that are possibilities include former Mavs' first-round pick Samaki Walker and George Lynch. Karl Malone is also out there, but isn't considered an option.
The Mavs are definitely looking for a certain kind of player if the waiver is granted.
"It would have to be somebody not afraid to perform in the playoffs," Nelson said.
Players that have been free agents all season or were waived before March 1 are eligible for the playoffs.
Mark Cuban admitted the current state of his team is somewhat disconcerting.
"It's not lucky," he said. "No one wants to lose games, but being healthy is more important. This is uncomfortable. You can go through 100 different scenarios you'd rather be in, but it is what it is."
Releasing a player to sign another isn't an alternative the Mavs are currently considering. Johnson is using every healthy body in his rotation, including rookies Rawle Marshall and Josh Powell, and center DJ Mbenga.
Van Horn hopes to return in the playoffs, which begin April 22. He's meeting with a hand specialist today, and there will be no word on his return until he has surgery.
Van Horn suffered the break at the base of his right thumb in Friday's loss at Orlando.
Van Horn's career with the Mavs has frequently been sidetracked by injuries. He missed most of the playoffs last year with an ankle sprain and had already been out 20 games this season with various injuries, most recently a strained knee that knocked him out 11 games.
A free-agent-to-be after the season, Van Horn feels snakebit.
"Other than the beginning of this year, I felt like I've never been able to hit a stride because I twisted my ankle, then I did my knee and now this," he said. "It's just unbelievably frustrating. Sometimes you don't understand why things happen."

listen, fatty, don't tell me that calling Shawn Kemp fat is played out....I haven't begun to allow it to play......much less it even being close to "out"
then again...we could always start aiming at all the kidOs...
like, "I hear that most of the daycare centers in the area are taking on more staff just upon hearing the Kemp rumor"....

I heard that once Shawn Kemp got mobbed at a NWA concert but that the band manager said it was his own fault: "I offered him some bodyguards but he said, 'I'm Shawn Kemp fool, I never use protection!'"

Shawk Kemp is overpaid..and to prove my point follow the link, hes ranked #2 on ESPN's most overpaid list...
2. Shawn Kemp, Blazers ($12,770,000)
For eight consecutive seasons, Kemp averaged 17.8 ppg or higher, but the 12-year veteran has averaged a little more than six points a game over the last two seasons, and has twice been suspended for drug violations -- so, on top of his diminishing productivity, he's not exactly someone you can rely on. (Of course, when he's suspended, the Blazers save $141,889 every game he misses, or he might have been No. 1 on our list.) Since the Blazers have him signed for big bucks through 2003-04, he's almost certain to make this list Perennial contender for at least two more years.

malone would seem to be the most appealing choice of that group if he would be willing to do it for one more run at a ring.

Malone is an interesting name... I'd rather see Powell get the minutes, and lets see if the kid's going to be an NBA player...

I liked Kemp when he was in Seattle. Maybe he's a changed man, who knows...
We could use Malone's elbows. If he's still in shape, I rather have him than Samaki...

i dont think that the last 8 games of the season for a championship-contending team is the time to see if powell is nba quality. malone or MAYBE kemp could provide some defense, rebounding, a better offensive game than powell and diop combined and hopefully could run off adrenaline in limited minutes. they have also both been there before

Kemp to audition today for Mavs supporting role
By ART GARCIA
Star-Telegram Staff Writer
DALLAS -- Don't rule out Shawn Kemp just yet.
The Mavericks' interest is such that coach Avery Johnson is personally working out the former All-Star power forward today in Houston. An impressive audition is the first step in Kemp joining the Mavs in time for the playoffs.
With the loss of Keith Van Horn to a broken hand, the Mavs are in the market for a backup to Dirk Nowitzki.
Kemp, 36, has been working out in Houston in an attempt to make a comeback. He retired after the 2002-03 season with Orlando, citing weight issues. He's reportedly lost about 50 pounds from his high of 320 pounds.
Even if the Mavs aren't granted the hardship exception to sign a 16th player, Kemp could still be in the plans. Waiving one of the 15 on the roster -- rookie Rawle Marshall is the probable candidate -- would free up a spot.
Kemp, 6-foot-10, averaged 14.6 points and 8.4 rebounds over 14 seasons and has the playoff experience (88 games) the Mavs are looking for.

Haha! I will be very, very happy if we signed the aging, slimmed-down, and worldly-troubled ReignMan, if only because of the fact that such said signing would allow me to buy an authentic Shawn Kemp Mavericks' jersey that would provide me with years and years of home-game/sports-bar Kemp jersey wearing amusement...

From Hoopsworld:
Quote:
Avery Johnson started by dispelling the rumor that Shawn Kemp might return to Dallas. Another Dallas media outlet was reporting that Avery had met with Kemp in Houston to discuss the possibility that he might join the Mavs in the event that they were awarded an injury exception by the NBA. Avery denied the report, saying he had not even spoken with Kemp and that he thought it was highly unlikely the team would get the injury exception. The reason being that they do expect to have 11 guys in uniform in time for the playoffs, even though they are currently running basically a nine-man lineup.

I'd hate to see Marshall end up with another team next year if the Mavs waive him for Kemp.
