GDT 3-22-10 : Mavs @ Hornets 7 PM Central Time
Im back so our win streak starts again
During the Dallas Mavericks' recent 13-game winning streak, they beat the New Orleans Hornets despite struggling in the second half.
Their inability to close games out has been a problem the last two games as well.
The Mavericks visit the Hornets on Monday night, looking to hand the Hornets another blow to their very slim playoff hopes.
Dallas (46-23) won 13 in a row Feb. 17-March 10, including a 108-100 victory over New Orleans on Feb. 28. The Mavericks led by 25 in the game, but allowed the Hornets to pull within four before eventually holding them off.
"We made this a lot harder than we should have," Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki said after scoring 36 points.
Nowitzki and the Mavericks have seen some more close games since, and they enter Monday having lost two of three. On Saturday against Boston, Dallas led by seven early in the fourth quarter before the offense faltered en route to a 102-93 loss.
Nowitzki scored 12 of his 37 points in the final quarter, but his teammates provided only nine more.
The loss came three days after the Mavericks nearly blew a 25-point lead against Chicago before holding on for a 113-106 victory. In the game prior, Dallas' streak was snapped with a stunning 128-94 loss to the Knicks.
"It's frustrating," said Jason Terry, who scored 18 points against the Celtics. "These are the games we've been winning."
The good news for Terry and the Mavericks is that three of their next four games are against teams with losing records and they still have a comfortable lead atop the Southwest Division.
For the Hornets (33-38), meanwhile, their window to make a move in the Western Conference is on the verge of closing completely and a challenging five-game homestand may not help.
Along with Dallas, New Orleans will face Cleveland, Portland, the Lakers and Washington during this stretch. With 11 games remaining, the Hornets are 9 1/2 games behind Portland for the final playoff spot.
New Orleans seems unlikely to finish strong, however, given it has lost 10 of 12 and returns home after a 1-4 road trip, which the Hornets closed with a 106-86 loss to Utah on Saturday. Coming off a 93-80 loss to Denver on Thursday, New Orleans was held to fewer than 90 points for the seventh time this season and third this month.
Chris Paul remained out for a 25th straight game and Peja Stojakovic (groin) missed his seventh in a row. The Hornets also lost David West when he was called for a flagrant foul late in the first quarter.
"That took a big part of our offense away, obviously David's scoring and his facilitating as a passer," coach Jeff Bower said. "It forced us to look in a lot of other directions and we didn't have a successful answer for that tonight."
Paul and Stojakovic's statuses for Monday aren't known.
Dallas has won both home games against the Hornets, but lost 114-107 in overtime in New Orleans on Nov. 4. The Mavericks have lost five straight road games to the Hornets.

Sounds like Chris Paul could be back for tonights game.
Hopefully not though, Paul is a Mav destroyer. Chill for one more game.

Dont think Paul is back, Hornets are tanking and want to push Collisons trade value to pack him with Peja in the summer. Paul will take it sloooow to come back.
Im curious how the team react. They sucked for almost 3 games in a row (Knicks, 2nd half Bulls, Celtics) and there arent any excuses: no injuries, plenty of days off).
And in this late stage of the season you just cant allow to suck 3 games in a row....

The New Orleans Hornets aka my most hated team in the league. Carlislie better not pull his usual sh*t and give Roddy a DNP tonight. Paul and Collison will have a field day if Kidd and Jet are gunna be the ones who will have to guard them all night, roddy better get at least a few minutes. Lets see how Paul reacts to Roddy's quickness and 6'10 wingspan.

Collison will probably eat us alive, and David West will make his usual bullying attempts, but the Mavs will still win.

Do I need to be pissed that West's flagrant foul 2 was changed into a flagrant 1 after the game vs Utah? I kind of expected him to miss this one after watching the highlights and reading this take from a hornets blogger:
Quote:
David West's ejection
Whatever small chance the Hornets had at winning this game disappeared when West got ejected. But did that foul warrant a Flagrant 2 call? Yes, I believe it did. The definition of such a foul from NBA.com:
A Flagrant Foul, Penalty 2 is defined as contact that is unnecessary AND excessive. The defensive player on this play winds up and makes hard contact with the airborne offensive player in a dangerous manner. This type of contact is both unnecessary AND excessive. The penalty for a Flagrant 2 is two free throws for the offended player, and his team would also retain possession of the ball. The offending player would also be ejected from the game, pending confirmation of the call via Instant Replay review.
You can see several examples of flagrant 2 fouls over at NBA.com's video rulebook, and what West did is close enough to them. You simply can't swing your arm and make contact with the head of an airborne player. That's too much. The fact that the officials reviewed the play and stuck with the call also rules out the possibility that the contact just appeared excessive in the moment.
|
And now he's a go and Paul could return as well tonight? I guess the poor results against teams without their star players should keep me from rooting for scenarios like that, but the outlook of not having two watch those ugly characters throughout the whole game and for the Mavs to play the sucky version of an to them always dangerous N.O. team sure seemed to be worth it.
On the plus side, now it's possible we see both, Roddy dunkin' on Paul(wooo) and some combination of Caron/Marion/Dirk dunkin' on West tonight, so there is still a lot to look forward to!

my predictions: Robo will sit on the bench, Kidd and Barea will be abused, we will lose, and Dirk will head somewhere else this summer.
I'm very gloomy.

damn! that last part is gloomy. I never even let that kind of thought in my head. Too bad I don't have a erase function for even having read that.

In no way, shape, or form is Collison even close to being as talented as Chris Paul

The Mavs would have to be as big of pussies as everyone who posted in this thread to lose this game...

Hornets - X
Mavs - X + Y
Y > 7 points
Dirk with y/2 + Z points, and a Triple double (Pts, Blocks, Assists)
Beabouis with Z minutes of play.

People always overreact to fouls on fast breaks.
Anyway, f*ck David West.
